Rita Purmort

Rita Purmort

Age - 102

November 30, 2023

Goshen, NH: Rita Emma Purmort passed away Monday November 27th, 2023 at the age of 102. Rita was born January 8, 1921 in Barrington, RI. Daughter of Aldea (Goodreau) and Amos Trudeau, Jr. Days after her birth, Rita's parents returned home to their Goshen farmhouse on Page Hill Road, where she lived until 1927, when they purchased their iconic white farm on the sharp corner, also known as Purmort's Corner. As a graduate of Towle High School Class of 1937, she met the love of her life, Richard Purmort. Both she and Richard served their country during World War II. A member of the US Navy WAVES (Women Accepted For Volunteer Emergency Service), Rita was stationed in Suitland, MD at the national Hydrographic Office mapping ships. While in service, she and Richard married July 20, 1945. After the war, she returned back to her family farm in Goshen, where they worked the dairy farm and grew acres of corn; the family would market the family crop to area restaurants and grocery stores, as well as selling at the farm. For those that knew her, her garden was her favorite place to be. In past summers she was seen daily with her walker, and using her hoe as a cane, taking pride with her work. Besides corn, she planted and harvested various other delights which she proudly shared with family and friends. Her family would help her in later years, and many would drive by and honk while she worked alone. Though she would say "I have two hoes, and nobody ever stopped to help me. " An ardent Boston Red Sox fan, it didn't matter if the game was home or away, East Coast or West, Rita would be glued to her TV for every pitch. She would complain when the team was doing terrible, and be cautiously excited when they were on a hot streak. You could always ask Rita how the Red Sox were doing and she would tell you exactly how she felt about them. In her younger years, she was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was noted for being an all around outdoors person. Over the decades, Rita gave back to her community. She was a past member of Goshen's ZBA, Conservation Commission, Budget Committee, Supervisor of the Checklist, and Historical Society, in 1958 she was one of the first members of the Goshen-Lempster School Board, a past president of the Goshen-Lempster PTC, was instrumental in the construction of the Goshen-Lempster Little League field, was a lifetime member of the Twin Ridge Mountaineers Snowmobile Club, was one of four members that started the Newport Booster Club in 1965, her 1936 State Champion field hockey team is a member of the Newport Athletic Hall of Fame, was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Sunapee Mountain Grange in 1984, was a proud member of the American Legion Post 25, Newport and VFW Aux. Post 808, Claremont and on her 100th birthday, was awarded the newly created Goshen Cane by the Board of Selectmen. She was preceded by her husband Richard who left us January 23, 1989, parents Amos and Aldea, brother Norman (Buck) Trudeau and sister Lorraine Nichols. Rita is survived by her daughters Beverly Hamilton (and husband Robert) of Goshen and Christine Smith (and husband Fredric) of Goshen, grandchildren Shari Markle, David Hamilton, Steven Smith and Shannon Smith, as well as great grandchildren Cole, Kendall, Tyler, and Harper, and great-great grandchild Paxton. For 102 years, Rita loved Goshen and passed away on her terms in her lifelong home. At her request, there will be no calling hours. She has asked to be buried with her beloved Richard. Please, family flowers only. In Rita's memory, please consider donating to the Olive G Pettis Library Discovery Park Fund, P. O. Box 57, Goshen, NH 03752. The family would like to thank the White River Junction V. A. home based primary care for their care and support. Rita was one of the last from the Greatest Generation, always told you how she felt, had an amazing memory, loved her town and country, and her corn was delicious and the best! She will be missed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 32 Beech St. , Newport, NH. Anne Kathan

Anne Kathan

Age - 95

October 25, 2023

Anne Johnson Kathan, 95, of Newport, NH, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 11, 2023. She was born on January 1, 1928, in Washington, DC to her late parents, Ralph Nathan ("RN") Johnson and Eloise Johnson Williams. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Walpole, NH where they had a dairy farm and a farm equipment business. She had two brothers, the late Thomas Johnson of Warren, James Johnson of Bellows Falls, VT, a sister, Jane Broadrick of Concord, a stepsister, the late Judy Fitzgerald of Westmoreland, and a stepbrother, Malcolm "Bill" Williams of Alstead. Between the Johnson, Williams and Kathan families there are a great many nieces and nephews and grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews who remember her fondly. While in grade school, Anne met and grew up with Oliver H. Kathan. After graduating from high school as valedictorian of her class in 1946, she studied at the Whittemore School of Business at UNH and received a degree in accounting. While in college she was often the only, or one of very few, women in her business classes. After she graduated, she moved to Hartford, CT where she lived in a local Y and worked for an insurance company for a year before finally saying yes to Ollie who had asked her to marry him at least a hundred times. They married in 1951 and moved to Wendell in 1953 to start a landscaping business. After two years they moved to Newport and established Kathan Gardens where it is today. Anne was an essential part of the success of Kathan Gardens where she oversaw sales. After long days of physically challenging work during the busy spring and summer seasons, she made dinner for her family (always from "scratch"), read to her children as she put them to bed, and finally sat down to do the bookkeeping for the business. When Dennis took over the business in 1988, she continued to help him with the bookkeeping, reluctantly learning to do the books on "that damned computer". Anne and Ollie raised two children, Nancy J. Kathan who lives in Newmarket with her partner, John Reddy, and Dennis A. Kathan who lives in Newport with his wife, Jill Violette Kathan, and had two grandchildren, Kristie Howe who lives in Newport with her husband, Buddy and their two children, Caleb and Sawyer, and Andrew Kathan who lives in Newbury with his wife, Stefanie and their two children, William and Samuel. She is especially remembered by her family for her love of gardening, how she enjoyed feeding, watching and identifying birds, picking berries, and her vast knowledge of wildflowers. How much she enjoyed traveling. How much she appreciated classical music and attending symphonies in Boston with her friends. That she was always trying new recipes using fresh ingredients from the garden. How disciplined she was with diet and exercise and maintaining her health. That she dried clothes on a line strung up in the back yard. That she usually had a cat with an interesting name - Tigger, Gorgeous George, Mama Kitty, Grey Kitty and Hidey to name a few. And how she always made Scotcheroos for family gatherings! Anne valued her community and served on the boards of the Library Arts Center and the Newport Service Organization. She helped organize the pie sales at the Apple Pie Fair for many years, usually making several pies herself (she made the best, flakiest pie crust), and was a volunteer at the Newport Thrift Shop where she "managed the linen department". She was dedicated to both organizations and was proud of the work they did. When her children were young, she was also a Brownie Troop leader and organized the annual Girl Scout Cookie sale for several years. And she was a member of the South Congregational Church in Newport. In her later years, Anne lived at Summercrest Senior Living with many friends and acquaintances she had known throughout her years in Newport. Although her hearing failed as she succumbed to the aging process, she always remained cheerful and was truly happy to see family and friends when they visited. It seemed that she would live forever, and Dennis and Nancy often joked that she would outlive them. Sadly, old age finally got the best of her, and she is deeply missed. The family invites anyone who would like to celebrate her life and reminisce about times spent with Anne, her keen wit and the sparkle in her eye, to join them with their memories and stories at the Salt Hill Function Room, 11 Central Street, Newport, NH on November 4, 2023, beginning at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, we suggest donations in her honor to the Library Arts Center, 58 N. Main Street, Newport, NH 03773, the Newport Service Organization, PO Box 515, Newport, NH 03773, or South Congregational Church, To to the family, pleaseShow more
