Sandy Copeland, 73 of Fort Sumner, NM passed away at her home on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 following an illness. She was born December 03, 1950 in Fort Sumner the daughter of Birdie Dee Smith and the former Louise Lorraine McClain. She grew on the family ranch south of Yeso. She attended school in Yeso until the school closed. Sandy attended and graduated from Fort Sumner High School in 1968. She attended Roswell Community College of Nursing.Sandy made her home in Fort Sumner. She drove the bus for several years for Fort Sumner Schools. She enjoyed leather work, made belts and chaps. She also enjoyed painting with pastels. Sandy was a homemaker and cooked for the working cowboys. She helped her children with show steers.Sandy was a member of Fort Sumner Church of Christ. She helped maintain the church grounds and the church related Christian Services.Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Mack Day Smith, and Richard Smith, and a sister and brother in law Sherry and Tony Peterpaul.Survivors include three children, a son Chris Copeland of Yeso, NM, two daughters Jenna Copeland of Morton, Texas, and Kara Morris (Clint) of Fort Sumner. Also surviving is one brother David Smith (Dana) of Roswell, NM, along with eight grandchildren Caz Copeland (Kylynn) of Fort Sumner, Ilyssa (Jess) Riley of Hico, Texas, Kelton Addison of Lubbock, TX, and Quade Addison of Lubbock, TX, Alannah (Nathan) Brown of Levelland,TX, Caytlin Pichla J.D. (Josiah) of Spearman,TX, Teghan Copeland of Portales,NM, and Jayton Morris of Fort Sumner, NM along with 4 great-grandchildren, Tucker, Sutton, Samson, and Kree and several nieces and nephews.Visitation hours will be Friday, January 26, 2024 from 1pm to 6pm at the funeral home.Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2024 in the Smith family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery with Charlie Overton officiating. Theresa "T" Ann Nichols, 84 of Fort Sumner passed away at her home Sunday, January 14, 2023 following an illness. She was born March 13, 1939 in Malone, New York to the home of Richard and Beatrice (Bertrand) Nichols. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Malone, NY, and later attended nursing school in Virginia. Theresa served in the United States Navy from September 9, 1958 until her honorable discharged on September 6, 1961. She worked as a nurse at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY for 32 years. Theresa and Joie made the Fort Sumner valley their home on April 7, 1994. They were married on September 6, 2013 in Syracuse, New York. Theresa loved sports, football, baseball, lacrosse, and horse racing. She was a fan of the NY Giants football team, Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball, and an avid fan of all Syracuse University sports. Theresa was a lifelong Catholic and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Thresa is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Mary Bartosik and Patricia Malark, and one niece Claire Nolen. Survivors include her life partner Joie Wreyford of the home in Fort Sumner, one sister Joan Griffin and her husband Robert of Potsdam, NY, along with several nieces and nephews including Robert Nolen and his wife Tracy of Cibolo, Texas. Richard "Butch" Alan Lee, 56, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on December 13, 2023 following a sudden illness. He was born on October 5, 1967 in Maine, but grew up and attended schools in Hereford, Texas, graduating with the class of 1986. Butch spent the last 15 years living in Iowa, but recently moved to Portales to live with his daughter, Montana. While in Portales, he worked for his son-in-law as a machine operator. When he wasn't working, or spending time with his kids and grandkids, Butch enjoyed riding his motorcycles. Butch is preceded in death by his father Alfred Lee, step-mother Janice Lee, and one sister Angela Lee. A loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend Butch will be missed by his two daughters: Montana (Frank) Levacy and Jessica (Jerett) Norman, and one son Colby Lee all of Portales, NM. He is survived by his 3 brothers: Timothy (Leah) Lee of Clovis, NM, Ronnie Lee of Lubbock, TX, and Charlie (Sabrina) Lee. Also surving are 6 granddaughters: Cacie, Kambri, Kali, Timberlen, Ester, Emory, and 6 grandsons: Wyatt, Cason, Kye, Kayden, Olen, and Lathe. He attended schools in Albuquerque, NM and later married Elijia Sanchez of La Loma, NM in 1975. Together, he and his wife Elijia established and operated G and L Mobile Transit Company. Gary was known for his genuine heart and his generosity. Gary is preceded in death by his wife Elijia and his parents. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. Rudolpho Adan Chavez, 80 of Cuervo, NM, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023 in Logan, NM. Rudy was born on November 8, 1942 in Cuervo, NM to Alfonso and Lucia Chavez. Rudy was raised in Cuervo where he attended school as well as in Santa Rosa, where he graduated from high school. Rudy played football for the Lions and was always a fan of the Lions. On May 3, 1965, Rudy married Judy Barela, and together they made their home in Cuervo, NM. Rudy worked for Santa Rosa Lake State Park in trucking and construction, and later was a mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service, until his retirement in 2021. Rudy was a life-long parishioner at Santo Niño Mission Church in Cuervo. Rudy is preceded in death by his wife: Judy, his parents and his brothers: Gene Chavez, Joe Chavez and Cecilio Chavez, Sr. —all of Cuervo. Rudy is survived by his siblings: Gabriel, Mary Ann, Rita and Frank—all Bernalillo, NM and Daniel of New Kirk, NM as well as numerous nephews, nieces, family and friends. Recitation of The Most Holy Rosary, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 3, 2023, beginning at 9AM, at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa, with Father Moses Nwonkwo officiating the services. Interment of cremains will follow at Santo Niño Cemetery in Cuervo, NM. Urn Bearer will be Cecilio Chavez, Jr, with Honorary Urn Bearers being Porky Jones and Billy Johnson. James Allen Dunn, 80 a lifelong resident of Fort Sumner, NM peacefully passed away on October 30, 2023 at his daughter's home surrounded by his family. James was born July 28, 1943 in Fort Sumner to the home of James Allen and Faviola (Gauna) Dunn. He grew up in Fort Sumner where he attended school. James married Mary Esther Anaya on June 2, 1965 in Fort Sumner. James worked for 24 years as the Maintenance Technician at the DeBaca General Hospital, and Pecos Valley Care Center. He also spent 7 years working as a ranch hand for Eduardo Trujillo in Guadalupe, NM. James served in the United States Army and spent 30 months in Germany. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1967. James was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8331 of Fort Sumner, and a charter member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus at Santa Rosa. He was also a member of the Fort Sumner Jaycees and St. Anthony Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Esther Dunn in 2021, one son James Allen Dunn Jr on September 09, 2023, a granddaughter Mary Yvonne Dunn, a great grandson Corbin Aragon, three sisters Dolores Ortega, Jean Chavez, and Lucy Roybal, and two brothers Edward Sena and Jessie Sena. A loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle James will be missed by his family. Survivors include five children, three daughters Deborah Maupin (Will) of House, NM, Sarah Aragon of Fort Sumner, and Corinne Mares Ulibarri of Rio Rancho, two sons, B. J. (Elia) Dunn of Fort Sumner, and Randy Dunn of Albuquerque, two granddaughters he raised Jessica Harris (Ryan) of Clovis and Lenore Christensen (Elton) of Hawaii. Three sisters Ruby (George) Gonzales of Fort Sumner, Angie Mares of Roswell, and Reba (Rudy) Casaus all of Albuquerque, two brother-in-laws Rafael Roybal of Clovis and Paul Chavez of Belen. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and many dear friends. Visitation hours for family and friends will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023 from 1pm to 5pm at Chavez Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 11:00 a. m. at the Church on the Hill in Fort Sumner, NM with Pastor Richard Terrell officiating. Johnny Martinez Jr

Johnny Marvin Martinez Jr, age 88, a life-long resident and multi-generational entrepreneur, passed away peacefully with his children at his side on September 29, 2023. Johnny was born July 15,1935 in Albuquerque, NM, to Juan H. Martinez and Dora G. Martinez. Johnny attended Santa Rosa Schools, graduating in 1954. At an early age Johnny became interested in cooking and made it a career that spanned over 70 years in his hometown of Santa Rosa. Johnny was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, gardening, trapping, camping and hunting arrowheads. He was a member of the NRA and a Federal Firearms Dealer. Being very civic minded, Johnny worked tirelessly to make Santa Rosa a thriving, successful city as City Councilman, a member of the Public Works Board and various other organizations within his beloved Santa Rosa. He leaves a legacy that will never be duplicated or surpassed. Johnny instilled a strong work ethic in not only his family, but in anyone that had the opportunity to work in one of the many establishments he owned and operated in Santa Rosa. Johnny's claim to fame is the notable Comet II Restaurant, where he worked side by side with his beloved wife Alice until her passing in 2006. He then continued working every day up until a few days before his own passing. The Comet II has been featured in many magazines, newspapers and on TV. The legacy will continue as an honor to his memory. One of Dad's favorite memories was being known as the Vitamin Kid, which was depicted in the memoirs of Rudolfo Anaya's "Bless me Ultima". Dad's most recent activities included watching western movies and reading books, often completing the book in one day. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents: Juan and Dora (Garcia) Martinez, his devoted wife: Alice (Gerhardt) Martinez, daughter: LuAnna Martinez Sena, son: Vincent Roque Martinez, sisters: Rita Olivas and Celina Sierra and his former wife and mother of his children: Patricia (Halpin) Martinez. Survivors include Johnny’s children: Steve (Chris), LeSharon (Ricky) Redelman, Casey (Carolyn), Juanita (Sean) Wootton and a niece who was more like a daughter: Sunshine Zamora, and brothers-in-law: Johnny Olivas and Ralph Sierra. Also surviving Johnny are his grandchildren: Rhonda (Ryan) Hillis, Mark Redelman, Ashley (Tim) Martinez, Taña Martinez, Riley (Clint) Elkins, John (Gabby) Martinez, Nick (Laynie) Martinez, Brooklyn, Skye and Marley Wootton, Robert and Adrianna Zamora and great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Gavin, Adalyn, Zane, Katalea, JianCarlo, Tenley, Kateri, Nathaniel, Alana, Jerome, Whitley, and one on the way. Also surviving Johnny are many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. Johnny has been described and will always be remembered as a Legend, an Icon, a Character, a Jokester, a Mentor and a Good Friend. To us, he'll always be our Hero and our Daddy. Rest forever in Paradise Dad, we'll love and miss you forever. Recitation of The Most Holy Rosary, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 20, 2023, beginning at 9AM at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa, NM, with Father Moses Nwonkwo officiating the service. Interment of cremains in the family plot, at St. Joseph Cemetery, will follow with Johnny’s beloved grandson and namesake: John Martinez, III serving as Urn Bearer.
