West Chicago, IL

Patricia (Pat) Ann Johnson (Bulger) of West Chicago passed away peacefully on September 7, 2023, at the age of 78, after her tenacious battle with several health challenges. She was surrounded by her loving family. "Tiny but Mighty" Pat fought her health issues like she did every one of her life obstacles - head on. Even with the odds clearly stacked against her, she never ever quit. Leading with laughter and positivity (although peppered at times with frustration and anger), she always came out swinging and persevered. Her resilience was extraordinary. A borderline superpower! When first meeting Pat, you may have experienced her impenetrable protective shell but when you took the time to "crack the code", you were fortunate to experience her lust for fun, absolute kindness and ferocious love for her family, friends, and animals. Her greatest accomplishment in life was her family. Her marriage to Milton (Bud) for 48 years, two boys Anthony (Tony) and Andrew (Andy), best friend and cherished granddaughter Stephanie, two daughters-in-law Christine and Laura, and loyal dog Brando. Besides her family, Pat's other affinities in life were adventure, being on or near the water, food (particularly sweets), coffee, music (forever faithful to Elvis Presley), all things purple, convertible cars, the breeze in her face, sunshine on the beach, going fast and shopping of any kind - specifically for purses, shoes, clothes, and jewelry. With a well-accomplished bucket list, a full heart, and the excitement of knowing that she would once again join God, her husband Bud, beloved brother Edward and her mother and father, Pat also left us with an intense gratitude for Tony and Christine and their unwavering commitment to her health, comfort, and dignity as her health declined. In respect of Pat's wishes, in lieu of a memorial service, the family asks for your consideration in donating to the Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoptions Center in Woodstock, Illinois so Pat's love for dogs and their well-being can live on. Thank you to all the life-long and newly made friends, caretakers who really cared (they know who they are), dialysis nurses, Bob from Angel's Wheels, and the staff at JourneyCare Hospice Barrington for your assistance in allowing Pat to finish strong, full of love and appreciation. We will forever miss her, but her shared life lessons, super-hero fortitude, and sidesplitting wit will keep her in our hearts for eternity.

Susan M. Knutsen-Cook, 76, of St. Charles, IL passed away at home on Monday, November 20, 2023. She was in the care of hospice due to the re-occurrence of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Born August 17, 1947, in Kankakee, IL to William and Honore (Farmen) Custer, Susan is survived by daughter Kim (Knutsen) Overstreet, son-in-law Ken Overstreet, and grandchildren Sage and Cole. Her family was blessed to have her living with them at the time of her death, and she was able to spend time with both of her grandchildren before she passed. She is also survived by cousins whom she loved and admired. Susan was married for over thirty years to the love of her life, Paul M. Cook, who passed away in 2013. In the 1980's and early '90's, Paul and Susan were co-owners of Chicago-based TV Actors Studio. During that time Susan was also the co-owner of Chicago Casting, which eventually became Knutsen-Casting. On taking the risk to become an entrepreneur in an un-known field as a single parent, Susan had said, "How brave do you want to be? You have to consider if it's worth the sacrifice and then close your eyes and jump. " Her jump paid off as she cast over 25,000 extras in approximately 40 films. Susan's other passion was home design and decor, and she used to "flip" houses in the 1970's, before there was an HGTV. In the latter part of her professional life, she worked at Havlicek Builders in Geneva, IL for twenty years, and then at Re-Max in St. Charles. A private interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva, where Susan and Paul will be united. For those who knew them, we know that he has been waiting for her, and he will tell her jokes for all of eternity.Show more

Ollie H. Kane, passed away peacefully at home in Naperville, Illinois, on Nov. 18th, just a few days before her 83rd birthday. Ollie was born on November 20,1940 in Experiment, Georgia to Roy Neal and Louise Brannon. She forever carried fond memories of her upbringing, including her grandmother for whom she was named. Ollie loved going back in the summer by train to visit her grandmother's rose garden at what may have been the first Air BnB in the nation. After her father Roy took a job in Philadelphia, the family settled in Broomall, PA, where Ollie grew up and graduated from Marple Newtown High School. She met Edmond Kane at Mackey's Pharmacy in Newton Square when she served him, by his account "a burnt hamburger. " The couple soon fell in love anyway and were married in November of 1958. Ollie and Ed took up residence in Valley Forge, PA. They had two children, Bonnie and Melanie. After Ed (aka Buddy) passed away suddenly, Ollie, who had been a stay-at-home mom, started in the hospitality industry. She enjoyed the camaraderie of the team environment until she retired in her sixties and often remarked on the human interest stories that were the highlight of her day. During this time, Ollie also successfully battled breast cancer. Ollie was very artistic. She loved to draw and paint and helped her daughters turn in some of the most creative projects throughout their school years. Ollie loved reading and writing, baking and dancing; her favorite music was Motown and anything with a good beat. Ollie also enjoyed public speaking and was a part of Toastmasters International for much of her life. Her family got to enjoy many of her highly original toasts at the holidays or on special occasions. Ollie was also a history buff, and devoured a variety of material, especially concerning the Civil War. In her later years, Ollie enjoyed fine dining and entertaining. She had many friends throughout her life and made new friends wherever she went. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always made people feel special. When she spoke with others, she unfailingly asked them about themselves and was an excellent listener, making them feel like they were the only person in the room. Ollie is survived by her daughters, Dr. Bonnie Kane of San Diego, CA (husband Stuart Horwitz) and Melanie Whiteford of Naperville, IL (husband Nathaniel); she expressed tremendous gratitude to Mel and Nat, who took such good care of her at the end of her life. Ollie is predeceased by her sister, Angela Devereaux, and survived by two nieces, Lynne and Diane. Ollie is also survived by her grandchildren, Fifer Horwitz and Bodhi Horwitz who were truly the light of her life, passing on to them her love of fashion, specifically unique finds at resale shops. Ollie's ashes will be scattered in Griffin, Georgia and in Valley Forge, PA with her family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for any donations to be made to the Susan G.
