Patricia Geier Obituary

Patricia "Pat" Yates Geier passed away on September 27, 2023 at 83 years of age. She was born in New Orleans on January 4, 1940. Pat attended Sacred Heart Academy, graduated from Holy Name of Jesus School, and earned her bachelor's degree from Loyola University, where she met her husband Don. She then became a teacher and taught at St. Stephen's, St. Rita (Harahan), and Ursuline Academy High School. She was a parishioner of St. Rita Catholic Church in Harahan and served in numerous ways; she was a member of the Altar Society, a Eucharistic Minister, and on the Bereavement Committee. She co-led, then assisted with the St. Rita Food Pantry, and was an adorer. As an adorer, Pat and 2 others managed the Adoration Chapel in its early years to ensure its solvency. Pat was part of a prayer group that spanned decades, participated in a weekly Rosary group, and she enjoyed reading, tennis, basketball, and travel. She always had an open book, ready to share what she read with anyone close. When her children were young, she played tennis at Riverside Country Club, then later in life played basketball for the Silver Slammers. Every year, Pat and her husband, Don, would head out in their RV to explore and relax. Pat was an active member of the catholic community. She was an associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph for many years. She participated in the Cursillo Movement and helped lead several Cursillo Retreats. She attended and led retreats through the Cenacle Retreat Center, and also organized Christmas Dinner at Covenant House with support from her St. Rita community for 17 years. She enjoyed spending time with family and always brought her cheesy potatoes to family gatherings. One of Pat's absolute favorite things to do was to attend her grandchildren's sports, performances and events. She continued until early 2023 when her health declined. Pat and Don started a new tradition after COVID; they attended 4:00 p. m. mass on Saturdays followed by dinner at Dot's Diner. Pat never met a stranger. She was always kind and truly enjoyed hearing a person's story. She is preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Welsh and Francis Lynn Yates; sister, Margaret "Peggy" Holliday; and brother, Robert "Bob" Yates. Pat is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald Ignatius Geier; daughters, Greta McDonough (Jim, deceased), Patricia "Tricia" Geier, Jennifer Zamjahn (John), and Jeanne Lewis (Dave); sons, Donald "Gregory" Geier (Brenda) and Randy Geier (Melanie); sisters, Kathy Yates and Linda Yates Parker (John Allen, III); brother, Ray Yates; and grandchildren, Donald "DJ" McDonough, Tyler Zamjahn (Emily), Helen McDonough, Ashley Harris (Austin), Gregory "Marshall" Geier, Neil McDonough (Shayla), Blake Zamjahn, Sara Geier, Mary McDonough, Liliana Geier, Parker Lewis, Rachel Zamjahn, Margot Lewis, and Annabella Geier. The family would like to give special thanks to Chrissy Kaufman, Beth Siegle, Valencia Williams, Jackie Berry, and Anvoi Hospice. A special thanks also to Pat Trahan for hosting the weekly rosary and Sandy Meyer for hosting their decades-long prayer group, which is still going strong. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation, rosary, words of remembrance, and mass on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at St. Rita Catholic Church in Harahan. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a. m. , rosary at 11:30 a. m. , words of remembrance (Randy Geier) at 11:50 a. m. , then mass, officiated by Fr. Steven Bruno, at 12:00 noon. Celebration of Life gathering will be held at the Harahan Knights of Columbus Hall, 375 Oak Street, Harahan, LA, immediately following the funeral.
