It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Reverend Dr. Paula Bost. A woman of profound wisdom, unwavering faith, and boundless compassion, Pastor Paula touched the lives of many within our congregation and beyond. Pastor Paula passed into the arms of her loving Father in Heaven on November 27, 2023, leaving behind her mother, Pam Harris, husband Dennis Bost, four children, Jennifer Tysinger, Eric Bost, Jade Breeback, and Cress Bost, 11 grandchildren. and countless friends. Pastor Paula was a founding staff member of Renaissance Church and an integral part of what God has done through the church for the last 15 years. Pastor Paula is a born and bred North Carolinian. Educated at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Liberty University, Paula earned a doctorate in Education. Her spiritual journey commenced at the age of nine, igniting a lifelong dedication to serving God, the church and its community. Her unwavering devotion led her through various roles within the church, from Children's Pastor to Youth Pastor, Worship Arts Pastor, and Small Groups Pastor. Paula's journey eventually led her to the esteemed position of Executive Director at Renaissance Church, a calling she embraced alongside Pastor Jason and Kelley Goins, having been drawn to their vision from the church's inception in 2008. In 2014, she courageously departed her 21-year tenure at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to wholly dedicate herself to Renaissance Church, stating, "God has prepared me to serve Renaissance Church all my life. I love this family. I Love this Purpose. I love to share my story. I've experienced Life Change. " A Celebration of Life service honoring Pastor Paula will take place on Saturday, December 2nd, at 10:00 AM at Renaissance Church, 5114 Harvey Rd. Jamestown, NC 27282. For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony will be livestreamed on the Renaissance Church Facebook page. This commemoration stands as a testament to the impact she made, marking a moment for reflection and remembrance of her enduring influence within our lives and the broader community. Through her years of devoted service, she not only nurtured our spiritual growth but also exemplified an extraordinary dedication to love, justice, and the teachings of Christ. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Whitener, 82, of High Point, NC on November 23, 2023 at Hospice Home in High Point. David was born in Hickory on September 15, 1941, the son of the late John Lewis and Mary Jo Messick Whitener. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Dick Whitener. David is survived by his wife, Donna Knollmeyer Whitener; his daughter, Angela Whitener Clark and her husband Todd Clark, of Kernersville, NC and their two daughters, Sarah Clark and Lauren Clark; his son, Rick Whitener and his wife Beth Whitener, of Bolivia, NC and their two daughters, Elisabeth Whitener and Anne Whitener. He is also survived by his sister, Libby Whitener Hale, and her husband, Greg Hale, of Hickory, NC, a brother, Chris Whitener and several nieces and nephews. A 1959 graduate of Hickory High School, David attended Lenoir-Rhyne College before receiving a degree in Mortuary Science from Gupton-Jones Mortuary College in Dallas, TX in 1966. He worked for Drum Funeral Home in Conover, NC until 1970. After a brief stint in the printing business, David joined Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory, NC where he had worked part-time in high school and college. He served as a funeral director and an embalmer until 1979 when he purchased a small manufactured housing supply business from his father, located in Hickory. As he did with everything, David immersed himself in learning about the manufactured housing industry and successfully grew his business over the next several years into a company with locations in NC, SC and VA. He eventually sold his business in 1994. Not one to be idle for long, David started and ran two small businesses out of his basement over the next couple of years. David was a loving husband to his wife, Donna, who he met shortly after high school and was married to for just a month short of 61 years at the time of his passing. He also loved his children and grandchildren and very much enjoyed gathering with his family in the mountains or one of his grandchildren's many school or extracurricular events. He was also a good brother and friend to many. A long-time resident of Hickory before moving to High Point later in life to be near his children and grandchildren, David had many friends that he appreciated and spent time with. David had many diverse interests and passions in life. Among others, David was an avid enthusiast of motorcycles and airplanes. He enjoyed reading history, particularly World War II aviation. He rode motorcycles much of his life and after selling his business, he rode extensively around the United States, often riding to bike rallies, aviation fly-ins and twice to Alaska. He also had a love of flying that led him to getting his private pilot's license. He would often fly to his visit his store locations as well as aviation fly-ins. He enjoyed flying to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the annual air show. His biggest flying adventure came when he joined a group flying through the Caribbean, hopping from island to island, almost to South America before returning home. He was a proud member of the Experimental Aviation Association and the Man Will Never Fly Society. He was also an active member with the Masonic Lodge #343. David will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory during a graveside service on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 11:00AM. The family will receive friends at Bass-Smith Funeral Home at 10:00AM prior to the service for forty-five minutes. A reception at First United Methodist Church will follow the graveside service at 12:00PM. Nancy P. Dunlap, 82, left this Earth on November 27, 2023, to meet her loving husband of 57 years, Douglas (Doug) Dunlap at the Gates of Heaven. She was born on January 6, 1941, in High Point, NC, to the late George and Irene Barker Pratt. Nancy was a devoted member and supporter of the First Wesleyan Church in High Point for over 60 years, serving in many volunteer capacities with her husband Doug. She worked nearly 40 years at Mickey Truck Bodies, Inc, in High Point. She enjoyed reading, antique collecting, and enjoying time at the beach or riding motorcycles with her husband. A loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, she will be deeply missed. She is survived by her son, William Dunlap, and his wife Ginger; four grandchildren, Jonathan Dunlap and his girlfriend Aleisha, Michael Dunlap and his wife Mary, Christopher Dunlap, and Zachary Dunlap; two step-grandchildren, Kendal Cook and Kaeleigh Cook; great grandchildren, Mary Lou Dunlap, Willow Dunlap, Lorelei Dunlap, Addison Beck and Kynleigh Shambley; sister Hazel Martin; nephews, George & Gary Martin sand special friends Lori and Brian Coe, and Katrina Dunlap. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Mildred Vanhoy, and sister-in-law Betty Bethea. Betty Hurley East Zachary, age 86, widow of the late Hoytt Zachary and Sam J. East, Jr. , passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023. Born in Montgomery County, she was a daughter of the late Leo J. Hurley and Minnie Alice Hall Hurley. Mrs. Zachary was a faithful member of Fairfield United Methodist Church for 50 years. She loved serving in many capacities at church including a devoted choir member, Adult Sunday School Class, Methodist Women's Group, and one of many ladies who made the Chrismons for the church Christmas tree. Her joys were God, her family, and her church, which was the center of her friendships and the activities she loved. Mrs. Zachary was retired from Allen Jay Middle School. She was a Volunteer with American Red Cross and worked for many years at High Point Regional Hospital. Mrs. Zachary is survived by three children, Chris East (Jennifer), Cindy East (Billy), and Lori Piazza (Paul); three grandchildren, Samantha East, Caroline Piazza, and Daniel Piazza; two sisters, Ann Jenkins and Carolyn Parsons; and a brother, Steve Hurley. In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by two brothers, Bob Hurley and Charles Hurley. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Fairfield United Methodist Church, 1505 NC Highway 62 West, High Point, NC 27263 with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
