Robert Jason Means II passed away peacefully in his home in Newport News, Virginia on February 27th, 2024. RJ was 31 years old and was a fun-loving old soul. He was a Loving Husband, Father, Son, The Best Big Brother, Nephew, Grandson, and Great Friend. Rj was born on August 17th, 1992, in Huntington WV. He graduated from Huntington High and Huntington Career Center in 2010 with a certification in Auto Body. He went on to a multitude of careers from Semi Truck body repair at Worldwide Trucking to train conductor at CSX. In 2017 he met his wife Stacie Means and son Gabriel Pingtore in Newport News, Virginia and were married in 2018. Rj was an avid motorcycle rider. If he was not at home grilling some kind of steak or burger, he was out riding his motorcycle. He also loved his truck, and it did not matter if he was working on it or driving. RJ was preceded in death by his grandfather and grandmother Arnia and Gloria Smith, grandmother Louann Traylor and his uncle Kevin Adkins He is survived by his wife and son Stacie Means and Gabriel Pignatore, Grandfather David Kirby, father and stepmother Robert and Missy Means, his mother and stepfather Dixie and Joshua Adkins, his brother Brody Means and his sisters Charlie Adkins, Kandis Adkins, and Emily Adkins and men who he loved as brother Christopher Day, Aaron Horn, Shawn Dillon, Jacob Bailey and many more he loved and who loved him. A memorial service to honor and celebrate RJ’s life will be held at a later date.

Elsie T. Leaptrot

Mrs. Elsie T. Leaptrot, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 24, 2024 after a brief illness at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. She was 91. Elsie, or Sugar as she was known to her grandchildren, was born in Savannah, Georgia to the late Edwin W. Thorpe and Carrie G. Thorpe. After attending Armstrong College and Wittenburg College in Springfield, Ohio, she married Lt. Brinson Nash Leaptrot in February 1958 and began the life of an officer’s wife, and mother, moving around the world every 3 years or so. Upon Nash’s retirement from the Air Force, the family resettled in Hampton, Virginia, where they resumed attending Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and Elsie worked in Gloria Dei’s school as a teacher’s aide. After the passing of her husband, Nash, in 1982, she joined Harrison and Lear, Inc. as a Property Manager managing the Fox Croft Apartments in Hampton, Virginia. After retirement from property management, she moved to the Mennowood Retirement Community in Newport News, Virginia, where she spent the last 20 years. She is survived by her children, Kristin and husband Tom Zarrella, and Kevin Leaptrot, as well as her five grandchildren, Lauren, Casey, Nash, Suzanne, and Paul, and nieces Leigh (Chris) Larmoyeux and Erin (John) Towers, and nephew Eric (Ellen) Thorpe. Elsie will be buried alongside her beloved husband, Nash, at Arlington National Cemetery with a graveside service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring her memory with a donation to Mennowood Foundation, 13030 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA 23602 or Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and School, 250 Fox Hill Rd, Hampton, VA 23669. Rev. Doctor Allen B. Hopkins, Sr. of Newport News, VA, passed away in his home on February 29, 2024, at the age of 80, with his family by his side. Allen was born on December 1, 1943, in Norfolk, VA, where his father was stationed during his time in the Navy. He grew up on Chincoteague Island, where he attended Chincoteague Elementary School and Chincoteague High School and was a member of Union Baptist Church. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Christopher Newport College in 1972; he would later be called into the service of our Lord and attend South Eastern Baptist Theological Seminar, Wake Forest, NC, in 1987, where he earned his Masters in Divinity and received a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies, from the International Seminary Plymouth, FL in 2001. Allen served as Pastor at Greenpond Baptist Church, Chatham, VA; Smyrna Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, VA; Jerusalem Baptist Church, Warsaw, VA; Carrow Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, VA; and Pine Chapel Baptist Church, Hampton, VA. He served as Interim Pastor at Island Baptist Church, Chincoteague Island, VA, and Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton, VA. Allen was a man of many talents and hobbies. He was a sprinter in High School, a skier, a motorcycle rider, a carpenter, a musician, and a singer, to name a few. He touched many lives in his years as a Social Worker, a Probation and Parole Officer, and especially as a Pastor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice Allen Hopkins and Olive Hill Hopkins of Chincoteague Island, VA, and his beloved grandmother, Lillian Andrews Hopkins of Chincoteague Island, VA. his father-in-law, Author J. Reynolds, and his mother-in-law, Emma Mary Powell Reynolds, of Hampton, VA. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Emma Faye Hopkins, and his son, Allen B. Hopkins, Jr. (wife Rachel) of Alabama, his daughter Lisa Kimberly Hopkins Dawley (husband Timothy) of Newport News, VA. Grandsons Shawn Matthew Dawley, of Virginia Beach, VA, Tyler Jay Dawley of Newport News, VA; and Police Officer Johnathan Allen Dawley of Newport News, VA; Stephan P. Hopkins of Texas, Scott Allen Hopkins of Texas, Shana Faye Hopkins Grieve of New York, Haley Hopkins of Texas, and his multiple great-grandchildren. The Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Sayler Funeral Home, Chincoteague Island, VA, with a viewing one hour prior. George L. Bazemore, Jr. of Newport News, Virginia, fondly known to most as “G.L.” departed this world for his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. He was born November 28, 1951 to the late parents George Lawrence Bazemore, Sr. and Lillian Cherry Bazemore, both from Bertie County, North Carolina. George was the youngest of four children: Eldner B. Shepard, Sylvia Bazemore (deceased), and Karen B. Kee. George was baptized at Celestial Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia where he was a Cub Scout and later a Boy Scout. He was educated in the Portsmouth Public Schools System. George was last employed at the Norfolk Naval Base prior to his long-term illness that left him disabled. He was very easy-going and well liked among his friends. A very capable dancer, he was light on his feet. He loved attending concerts and collecting percussion instruments. Left to cherish George’s memory and mourn their loss are his two loving sisters Eldner and Karen, brother-in-law Dr. William Shepard; nieces Melanie S. Porter, Esq. (Chris), Stephanie Shepard, Jovan K. Miree, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. A memorial service will be held at the Roosevelt Memorial Park in Chesapeake, Virginia on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 11:00 am. James, also known as "Jake" was born on May 26, 1942, to the late James Arthur Spratley Sr. and Sarah Lee Alston Spratley. He resided in Smithfield, Virginia, during his adolescent years. He lived in Nyack, New York most of his adult life, where he was employed with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals as an Air Conditioning Refrigeration Technician for over 30 years.He was a humble man with a kind and loving heart, he loved his family greatly. James was a devoted Saxophonist who played for Faith Temple Church Choirin Spring Valley New York. He loved the Lord and his church family. Studying the word of God with his friends meant a lot to him. It was through those fellowships that his faith and personal relationship with the Lord grew stronger. James loved taking spontaneous trips with his family to amusement parks, Rye Beach and Six Flags were his favorites. He was always clean cut and was a sharp dresser.He was predeceased by his daughters Paulette Spratley and Wanda Marie Spratley: his siblings, Ida Rose Spratley, Lillie Johnson and Sarah Ann Robinson; and brother Frank Lee. Spratley Sr., brother-in-law Smith Allen Robinson Jr. and a nephew Wendell Spratley.Remaining to cherish his memory and love are his children Jeanette Spratley (Pittsburgh Pennsylvania), Trina Spratley Brown (Toryanto) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Nikki Nicole Spratley (Lawrenceville Georgia), a bonus son Greg Ingram (Smyrna, Georgia) and 2 bonus daughters, Michelle James (Willie) Opelika, Alabama, and Monique Chappell (Wilson, North Carolina);12 grandchildren, 16 great grands, and 1 great great grand; His siblings Sandra Banks, Eva Davis, and sister-in-law Linda Spratley, 2 special friends Floyd Spratley and Bob Robert Pinkston, along with a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.James fought the good fight of faith, he finished the race, he kept the faith. Now there is in store for him the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award him on that day, and not only to him but also to all who have longed for his appearing.( 2 Timothy 4:7-8).Through this journey he shared a special bond with his sister Sandra Banks and niece Sheena Spratley, who played a vital role in his caregiving. Also, special thanks to Fresenius Kidney Care and staff Smithfield, Virginia for all you’ve done for James over the years your services were appreciated.On Thursday, February 15, 2024 viewing will take place from 3-6pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. Stephen Wayne Jackson, known to many as Steve/Action Jackson peacefully passed away on February 27, 2024, at the age of 60 in Newport News, VA. He was born on March 9, 1963. Stephen was a food enthusiast who loved trying anything new in the culinary world. He had a fondness for music especially classic rock. In his leisure time, he enjoyed challenging his knowledge with Jeopardy!. He was also an avid Washington Redskins fan who enthusiastically followed their games. His favorite place in the world was the beach, where he found solace and peace. Stephen’s proudest accomplishments were his three daughters, Virginia Elizabeth Jackson , Stephanie Noel Jackson (Cole Jackson), and Kelsey Lynn Jackson, whom he cherished deeply. He is also survived by his sisters Cindy Moore (Rob Moore) and Sandra Foley, sister in law Karen Lunceford, his niece and nephew Kaitlyn and Michael Foley and great niece Sofia Foley. He is preceded in death by his mother Virginia Katherine Flair, his father Thomas Flair and his sister, Teresa Jackson. Also the love of his life Susan Nicolay. Stephen was known for his quick witted sarcasm and sense of humor, which endeared him to many. From his “Jello-Pudding” hellos to his “Bye-cycle” goodbyes, it is clear that he possessed a unique essence that touched the lives of those around him. Stephen Wayne Jackson will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.
