Evelyn "Lynnie" Wienecke- Lynnie left for parts unknown on Friday, December 1, 2023. She had a full, wonderful life - blessed by family, friends and travel, but she finally ran out of breath due to COPD coupled with COVID. Lynnie grew up in an Army family, moving around the Eastern Seaboard, Japan and Okinawa, thus beginning her travel addiction. Teased for being a perennial student, Lynnie started college at Northwestern then transferred to the University of New Mexico in 1960. At UNM, she earned both a Bachelor's of Fine Art (BFA) and Master's of Art (MA) degrees. Lynnie enjoyed a career first teaching school, then working for an educational research firm, then the Department of Energy, from which she retired in 1996. A highlight of her federal career were her years at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History (then called the National Atomic Museum). Travel was an important feature while working and after retirement. She and her life partner of 45 years, Oscar George traveled the world, visiting over 70 countries, enjoying ski and beach vacations with friends and family. As COPD left less energy for adventure travel, she found cruising suited her travel needs perfectly. Unfortunately, COVID brought cruising abruptly to an end: four planned cruises for 2020 were canceled. Art of all kinds remained central to Lynnie's heart and soul. A scholarship has been established in her name at UNM's College of Fine Arts. Please consider donating to the Lynnie Wienecke Scholarship Fund, University of New Mexico Foundation, 700 Lomas Blvd. NE, Two Woodward Center, Albuquerque, NM 87107. Our heartfelt thanks to Presbyterian Hospice and Beehive Assisted Living for making Lynnie's last days more comfortable.Show more

Ruth E. Johnson Sadly, we announce the passing of Ruth Elaine Johnson, 87, of Albuquerque, NM on November 27, 2023. Born Ruth Elaine Rohrer she was raised in Junction City Kansas, the 6th and youngest child of Harold and Helen Rohrer. By all reports she had a pretty idyllic and rambunctious childhood, growing up on a farm with 4 older brothers and one older sister. At the age of 9, alone, she suffered cuts and bruises resulting in 21 stitches from falling off her Shetland pony and 2 weeks later fell out of a haymow, incurring more scalp injuries! She was active in 4-H and won many blue ribbons for sewing and was a judge at the age of 14. She taught both of her daughters sewing and needle work skills when they were young. She attended Kansas State University where she met her future husband, Ralph Johnson; they married in 1958. She received her degree in Elementary Education but was unable to start teaching because she was pregnant with her first child. Ralph had a military obligation with the Air Force and was stationed at what was then called the Air Force Weapons Lab at Kirtland AFB. They relocated to Albuquerque in 1963 with 3 young children in tow. They quickly established themselves with local Catholic churches and were one of the founding couples of the Marriage Enrichment program and she was active on the board for 43 years and, with Ralph, wrote books and guides on the ministry. Ruth was a stay-at-home mom who was active in her children's activities shuttling them to scouting, church activities and music and dance lessons. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed trying new dishes and perusing recipes in cookbooks and magazines. She enjoyed entertaining and her family has fond memories of Thanksgivings and Christmases at their home. Ruth came from a long line of storytellers, and she was gracious, witty and astute. Ruth's granddaughter Tiffany summed her up pretty well: "Heaven gained the most perfect, beautiful soul of an angel today. My grandma was a miracle of a woman who I admired dearly. She was witty, funny, strong willed, firm but kind. She will be forever loved and missed. " Ruth is preceded in death by her son Tom, daughter-in-law Tina, sister Monica and brothers Richard, David and Philip. She is survived by her husband of over 65 years Ralph, daughters Barbara Johnson of Albuquerque, Janet Hecht and husband Alan of Lawrenceville GA and son Greg Johnson of San Antonio, TX. Also surviving her are grandson Tom Johnson, wife Renee and their children Cameron and Delaney of Larkspur CO. , her granddaughter Tiffany Stewart and her husband Jacob and their sons Jude and Theodore of Brighton, CO and her brother Hugh Rohrer and wife Barbara of Naples FL. She is also mourned by other family and a multitude of friends. Ruth's send-off will be on December 12th at John the 23rd with a visitation at 9:30 followed by mass at 10am. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers the family would ask that you make a contribution to a charity of your choice.Show more

George Gomez

George Gomez

Age - 76

December 2, 2023

George Ernest Gomez was called by the Lord to his heavenly home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. George was born on Friday, April 4, 1947, on Dora Street in Old Town Albuquerque, NM, to Rosalie Gomez. He was a devout Catholic and was a member of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church from 1975-2004 and St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church from 2005-2023. George was raised in Willard, NM, and graduated from Estancia High School in 1965. He took great pride in being a part of the EHS basketball team and he never forgot where he came from. George loved his roots and cherished the people from Willard so much so that he maintained lifelong friendships with many of his classmates and neighbors. In tribute to these friendships, his pallbearers will all be from Willard or Estancia, some of whom have been friends with George from as early as fifth grade. After high school, George moved to Las Cruces to attend New Mexico State University and graduated in 1973 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for the NM Department of Transportation and Foodway during his time at NMSU, in addition to joining the Army Reserve. He often spoke fondly of the many friends he made at NM State and told many stories of the adventures he had going to college as a young adult including that of a motorcycle that was bought and shared by him and several of his friends. After moving to Albuquerque in 1973, George worked for McMillan and Associates, Bohannon & Houston, and the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District. He also continued his service in the Army Reserve. In the early 1980s, he went to work for the City of Albuquerque in the Engineering Department and had a successful career in public service, retiring from the city in 1999. Even after retirement he worked several jobs and every job he would interview for, he would be hired on the spot! His last job was working for Smith Engineering and when his wife, Dora, retired in 2007, he retired from work and from 37 years with the Army Reserve. George met Dora Herrera in 1974 who had just graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1973. They were married on August 2, 1975, and began their lives in a Lobo/Aggie household that generated perennial conversations about which school would have the better teams that particular year! On June 12, 1980, their son, Erik Jayson Gomez, was born, who would later grow up to be a UNM alumni, which meant George was outnumbered 2 to 1 in the household. When Erik was five years old, they started taking him to Lobo basketball games. They have been dedicated season ticket holders since then and have traveled many times to see the Lobos play. As was in George's nature, he made many friends attending the Lobo games and spent much of the time at games socializing and interacting with everyone he had met over the years. George was a man of faith and virtue who did not need to wear his faith and virtue on his sleeve. He was, instead humble and unassuming. A generous man who never took his success for granted and demonstrated this by helping others. George was always willing to help anyone in need but would be slow to ask anyone for a hand for himself so as not to inconvenience anyone. During his short illness, it was clear that his concern was not for himself, but more for his family whom he cared for and doted over. This was typical George: thinking of others before himself. George is preceded in death by his mother, Rosalie G. Warcken, and his in-laws, Feliciano and Helen R. Herrera. He is also predeceased by several maternal aunts. George is survived by Dora, his wife of 48 years, of the family home, his son, Erik, of Albuquerque, sister-in-law Norma Herrera (Bert Romero) Mora, NM; Debbie Alexander (Joe) of Cleveland, NM; Dottie Herrera (Brian Gutierrez) of Albuquerque; nieces Felicia Alexander of Houston, TX; Franceska Alexander (Jon Yales) of Albuquerque, NM; and Gabrielle Gutierrez (Chris Flores) of Culver City, CA; nephew Allen Gutierrez of Albuquerque along with extended family and numerous friends. Family and friends may visit FRENCH - Westside, 9300 Golf Course Road, NW on Friday, December 8, 2023; 6:00 p. m. , Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p. m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023; 9:00 a. m. , Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 619 Copper Avenue NW. Committal Service will be held on Monday, December 11, 2023; 1:00 p. m. , Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. Flowers are appreciated, or, alternatively, contributions can be made to his favorite charity, Joy Junction, in remembrance of his life and legacy.Show more

Gilbert Mershon

Gilbert Mershon

Age - 93

December 2, 2023

Gilbert Leroy Mershon was born to Edward Leroy Mershon and Martha Maude Buffem in Aurora, Colorado on January 5, 1930. He fell asleep in death at his home on November 16, 2023. Gilbert dedicated his life to Jehovah and was baptized on June 8, 1968. He served as a ministerial servant and was appointed as an elder in March 2006. He especially loved going out in the field ministry to teach people about God’s Kingdom and what it would do for them. He was well liked and loved in any congregation he served, whether he was a publisher, ministerial servant or an elder. Gil became famous for his Mario Andretti driving style in his vehicles and his bright cherry red scooter in service. Gilbert’s favorite scriptures were Romans 8:39 and 2 Peter 3:13. Gilbert graduated from East High School in Denver, Colorado in 1948. He went on to enlist in the US Navy and served in the Korean war, where he worked as an ice cream maker and tailor on a battleship. Gilbert learned to be a hard worker from his mom and dad, and later went on to work for the railroad. He worked for the Rock Island Line Railroad until it went bankrupt. Afterward, he became a machinist. He felt his greatest work was that of being a servant of Jehovah. Gilbert loved showing his kids and later his grandchildren how to read maps and use mile markers. To this day, one of his granddaughters uses what she learned from Gil when she travels. Having worked for the Railroad for many years, Gil had a keen interest in trains and loved riding the rails. Gilbert was an avid fisherman and especially liked fly fishing in the Rio Chama and the San Juan Rivers. His other interests included road trips, reading his Louis Lamour books and the Bible. Gil always made time to visit with his friends and family. Gilbert lived in Texas, Kansas, Colorado and then found his home in New Mexico. He was married 67 years and in Gil’s words "it took 3 women to do it. " He married Beth Knowles on January 5th, 1950. He went on to marry his second wife, Wilma Walters, in 1955. Finally, he swept Roberta "Bobbie" Casey off her feet, and they were married on April 22nd, 2000. Anyone who knew Gil remembered his many quaint sayings and these became known as "Gilisms. " Here are just a few: "Let's take off like a herd of turtles. " "Just like Saturday night and payday!" "That's a nickels worth of shade. " "If I was doing any better, I’d have to clone myself. " A fond memory of Bobbeye, Gilbert's daughter was how her dad would make sure he took Bobbeye and her brothers and sisters to ride a passenger train and he would point things out to them and where good fishing spots were. Gilbert is survived by his children Bobbye Royce Flinchum, Johnny Leroy Mershon, David (Marilyn) Engelbrecht, Carrie (Mike) Thibodeau, Timothy (Tim) (Jacqueline) Casey, Sean Casey, Steve (Shannon) Casey, Mary Casey, Kellie (Brian) Patton. He is also survived by his brother Paul (Jackie) Mershon. He was preceded in death by wives Roberta Sue, Wilma, and Beth. By his Son Danny Mershon, Daughters Deborah Northcutt, and Terri Mershon: Sibling Shirley Nightingale. Gilbert had a trainload of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great, great grandchild carrying up the caboose. Gilbert had many friends and will be truly missed until our reunion with him in paradise. A Memorial talk for Mr. Mershon will take place on December 3rd 2023 at 6PM MST at The Kingdom hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 1716 20th Ave SE Rio Rancho, NM 87124Show more
