Robert Bruening

Robert Bruening

Age - 92

September 26, 2023

Robert "Bob" Ernst Bruening, age 92, was born September 19, 1930 in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He died on September 16, 2023, three days prior to his 93rd birthday, after a short illness. Most recently, he has been a resident at Generations at Neighbors in Byron, Illinois for 6 ½ years. Prior to that, he lived in Milwaukee for about 50 years. Bob grew up in Milwaukee, graduating from Lutheran High School in 1948. He then went to Concordia Teacher’s College in River Forest Illinois, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Bob served as a teacher, church organist, music and choir director at 3 different congregations throughout his career. While first serving at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Concordia Missouri, he met Dorothy Borgelt who was a member of his adult choir. They were married on May 29, 1954. Bob later served at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Saginaw Michigan, and Our Father’s Lutheran Church in Greenfield Wisconsin. In the classroom, he taught 5th & 6th grades. He also taught his students to sing and enjoy music as part of their daily life. As an organist, he often added the musical sparkle of a descant with the last verse of a hymn. And when it came to directing his 3 choirs . . . a children’s choir, his male chorus, and the adult choir . . . Bob was always preparing music for an upcoming worship service. Bob often combined his 3 choirs for a special service occasion. He really loved and enjoyed directing a large choral ensemble! After retiring from teaching, he worked many years as a Masonry Laborer for H. C. Breest Construction Company in Milwaukee Wisconsin. And then on Sundays, he continued as organist for several inner-city Milwaukee churches. He also regularly ministered to inner city youth, encouraging them to sing in one of his choirs. Bob has been one of the most passionate and loyal Packer fans over the course of his life. He was also a long-time supporter of the Milwaukee Bucks and Brewers, along with his Wisconsin Badgers. And if he felt it was needed, he was the type of fan that would easily pick up his pen and author a letter or two, addressed to the coaching staff, offering his advice on how to improve the performance of his favorite teams. He was also an avid back yard gardener, taking great pride in the volume of produce at the end of the growing season. He loved the outdoors, doing anything that would offer an opportunity to soak up some sunshine. He especially enjoyed swimming. And as long as he was able, he would continue to pursue the very best choirs in the Milwaukee area . . . either attending concerts, or singing in his favorite chorus or barbershop group. Bob was a wonderful father, grandfather, and friend. His dedication and love for the Lord was a guiding priority each day. He so often expressed his abundant gratitude for how richly blessed his entire life has been. As a family, we are so thankful for his presence in our lives. He has been an inspiration for all of us. Bob was predeceased by his parents Martin E. and Anita (Kuechle) Bruening; his wife of over 40 years Dorothy (Borgelt) Bruening; and brother Thomas Bruening. He is survived by 4 daughters: Miriam Bruening (Tim Smith) of Oregon, IL; Kathryn Bruening (Roger Gonnering) of Schaumburg, IL; Elizabeth Bruening of Peoria, IL; and Lorraine (Scott) Ibe of Peoria, IL; 8 grandchildren: Marni Gonnering, Ann Gonnering, Kayle Weinzimmer, Zachary Weinzimmer, Nichole Weinzimmer, Roxanne Ibe, Vince Ibe and Trisha Ibe; and sister Barbara (Bruening) Unger, of Lindenhurst, IL. Memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, October 2, 2023 at the United Church of Byron at 701 W. 2nd Street, Byron, IL with the Reverend Ron Miller of Peoria, IL officiating and Scott Ibe of Peoria, IL as organist. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Generations at Neighbors in Byron, IL or to an organization of the donor’s choice. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. " Matthew 6:33 https://generationsneighbors. com/Show more

Robert Tuten

Robert Tuten

Age - 78

August 1, 2023

Robert (Bob) Thomas Tuten, 78, of Byron, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, July 30, 2023 , with family at his side and while listening to his granddaughter sing during the Grace Valley CRC worship service. Bob was born on January 19, 1945 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Jesse and Ruth (Haddy) Tuten. He graduated from Eddystone High School in Pennsylvania and The King's College in New York. After college, he attended Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. On September 7, 1968, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Comer, and they began their married life in Philadelphia while Bob completed seminary. While Bob was in seminary, he was an assistant minister at Grace Chapel Reformed Episcopal Church. Following his graduation from seminary, Bob moved with his wife to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where he worked as a minister at Providence Chapel Reformed Episcopal Church. In 1972, Bob left the ministry to begin what would be a 40+ year career in publishing, beginning with a position as an Associate Editor at Garden State Publishing in Sea Isle, NJ. After Garden State Publishing was sold to WATT Publishing in 1977, Bob did some freelance work until he accepted a full time position with WATT Publishing as Editor of Industria Avicola and moved with his wife and three children, his wife's parents, as well as their friend, Keefe, to the Midwest in the middle of the brutal winter of 1979. They settled in a home in Mt. Morris, IL, where they raised their (soon to be) five children and resided until October of 2021 when he and Nancy moved in with their daughter and her family in Byron, IL. As the Editor of Industria Avicola , Bob traveled throughout Latin America, an endeavor which was audacious in its own right, but even more so given he did not write or speak fluent Spanish when he took on this role! To remedy this, Bob spent time in Bolivia living with a family and learning the language after accepting this position. In addition to Industria Avicola , at various times Bob was also Editor of Industria Porcina ( a pork production magazine), WATT Poultry Yearbook , and Who's Who . In 1995, Bob added the position of Marketing Director to his responsibilities. Early on he recognized the potential for the internet to revolutionize the publishing industry. He took a big leap out of the editorial side of the print business to develop an online presence for Watt Publishing as Director of Electronic Media Services, a position he held until his retirement in 2014. At the time of his retirement, Bob had worked for WATT Publishing for more than 35 years. Bob's faith was the foundation of his life. He knew the unconditional, sacrificial love of his Heavenly Father and he sought continually to model that for his own family. Bob was an active member of Grace Valley Christian Reformed Church for over 40 years, serving as Superintendent of Sunday Schools, a deacon, an elder, and editor of the church newsletter. He was also a representative to the denomination's Classis Northern IL and to Synod, as well as a delegate to the Home Missions team. Lest anyone worry that Bob's seminary degree was put to waste, all of his children and many friends and family benefited from his vast Biblical and theological knowledge and knew his enthusiasm for a good theological debate! Some of Bob's other hobbies included photography, gardening, and cooking. Bob was also a life-long Chicago Cubs fan, and relished in their 2016 World Series victory. Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Nancy; daughters, Kristin Tuten of Wheaton, IL and Laura (Chris) Harland of Byron, IL; sons, Matthew (Kelly) Tuten of Pagosa Springs, CO, Stephen (Elisabeth) Tuten of Conifer, CO, and Joel (Maria) Tuten of German Valley, IL; his nine grandchildren, Benjamin, Kaitlyn, and Madison Harland, Alice and Jesiah Tuten, Micah and Jonah Tuten, and Elena and Olivia Tuten; his two sisters, Carol Eskridge and Hope (Alan) Bretherick of PA; his sister-in-law, Antoinette (Philip) Vella of Dixon IL; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a whole lot of grand-dogs, grand-cats and grand-chickens! Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Jack. A visitation will be held at Grace Valley CRC, 8210 E. Edwardsville Rd German Valley, IL, on August 5, 2023, from 10:00 A. M. until service time. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 11:00 A. M. in the church. Following the service an extended visitation and meal will be shared. The burial will take place in Plainview cemetery in Mt. Morris, IL. The family would like to express their gratitude for the care Bob received through Serenity Hospice and Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Serenity House in Oregon, IL. Born May 31st, 1936 in Port Byron, Illinois to Raymond and Fern Love, Irene led an amazing, rich, extraordinary life, way ahead of her time in her beliefs and lifestyle, always surrounded by an eclectic group of artists, musicians & creative people. She was an accomplished painter, potter, teacher, jewelry maker, seamstress, gardener, as well as giver of great back rubs. In 1955, she married Bill Wiesjahn, a jazz pianist, and drove across country to San Francisco where they opened The Jazz Cellar in North Beach during the height of the Beat Era. In 1960, Irene moved with Roland Hall (an abstract painter) to the remote coast of Big Sur to escape the conformity and norms of society. Living without electricity, or telephone and hours from the nearest hospital or market they raised 5 children, 3 of them being born at home. While in Big Sur she tended a large garden, raised chickens, geese, goats etc. She and Roland followed one of the pioneers in alternative medicine Henry Bieler's philosophy of macrobiotic cooking and fed her family a diet of fresh vegetables, brown rice and goats milk as well as creating beautiful art. In 1969, she started a new chapter in her life, packing up her family, they traveled to Arica, a town in the Atacama desert of northern Chile, to study with Oscar Ichazo, a teacher of metaphysics who was just establishing the Arica School of transcendental knowledge. Her Arica experience made a lasting impact on all who knew her. Irene's home was always a place of refuge and love, she was fearless in her approach to life and her generosity was unmatched, always giving and never expecting anything in return. Irene leaves behind 2 sisters, 5 children, 6 grandchildren and countless others in her large extended family. She will be missed.
