James Jundt

James Jundt

Age - 81

December 7, 2023

James "Jim" Richard Jundt of Scottsdale, AZ, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, reader, sports lover, astute investor, passionate art supporter, and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2023, at 81, after a brief illness. Survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Joann, his three children, and twelve grandchildren, Jim leaves behind a legacy of a life well lived. Tony and Rosemary Jundt raised Jim and his younger brother Ray in Yakima, Washington. Jim's intellectual curiosity and entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly from an early age. His dream of pursuing a career in finance after reading a book about Wall Street led him to Gonzaga University, where he earned a degree in economics in 1964. Armed with his degree and unwavering determination, Jim boldly ventured to Wall Street with his new wife, Joann, starting a great American adventure. After arriving in New York, Jim tenaciously cold-called several Wall Street firms, convincing them for an interview, ultimately securing a position as an equity research analyst at Merrill Lynch in 1964, marking the inception of a distinguished career in the investment industry. His dedication, discipline, and ability to identify promising growth stocks earned him a reputation as a skilled analyst, leading him in 1969 to join IDS in Minneapolis as a portfolio manager. Jim was entrusted with managing a billion-dollar mutual fund at the remarkably young age of 28. He quickly developed and refined his investment strategy while working with some of the best and brightest investment minds at the time. When the 1980s arrived, and the market broke its long slumber, recognizing the emerging trend of boutique asset management, Jim founded, along with Gary Capen, Jundt Capen Associates in 1983. Under his leadership, the firm thrived, attracting clients, assets, and accolades for its impressive track record. Jim's investment philosophy was rooted in identifying fast-growing companies with the potential to disrupt competitors and revolutionize or create new industries. He was a master of finding the next "ten-bagger," and his keen eye for innovation, growth, and high-quality management teams was the recipe that propelled industry-leading returns. In addition to his acumen for stock picking, Jim invested in numerous private companies and served on many corporate boards, including as co-owner of the Minnesota Vikings. Jim also became involved in Broadway, investing in many notable productions, including the Tony Award-winning show The Producers. Jim along with his wife were committed to the arts, generously supporting institutions such as the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Minneapolis Orchestra, and the Guthrie Theater, and helped make possible the Jundt Art Museum at Gonzaga University, his alma mater. Beyond his professional commitments, Jim was an avid supporter of Gonzaga University. He served as a trustee and board chairman, helping the university navigate challenging times. He also established the James R. Jundt Chair of Economics and endowed numerous scholarships, believing in the importance and power of a liberal arts education. Most importantly, Jim was a dedicated fan of Gonzaga "Zags" basketball, watching every game year in and year out and attending many games when possible. Even Joann would acknowledge that Jim's first love was baseball. Though he never played beyond high school, Jim never lost his passion for the game. He instilled a love of the game in his children, taking them out of school every April for the Twins' opening day and experiencing the 1987 and 1991 World Series. While his dream of playing professional baseball was unfulfilled, Jim found immense joy as a spectator, coaching and watching his grandchildren play the game he loved. Jim's passion for life and competition extended to his hobbies, including golf. A long-time member at Hazeltine National, he enthusiastically embraced the game, relishing the camaraderie, competition, and occasional hole-in-one. His unwavering determination and ability to rise to the occasion under pressure made him a formidable opponent on and off the course. Jim was a bookworm in his free time, devouring history and biographies relentlessly. He loved to exercise and enjoyed going to the movies, with a fondness for all the great westerns. Jim traveled extensively worldwide, often with his beloved wife Joann by his side. Jim was a cowboy at heart, always up for a new challenge. He also cherished spending time with his family, whether it was enjoying summers out on Lake Minnetonka or retreating to the warmth of Arizona during the winter months. At the core of Jim's life was his enduring love for Joann, his high school sweetheart and partner for over 59 years. Together, they successfully navigated a great American adventure, raised three children, and nurtured a vibrant family that expanded to include twelve grandchildren. Jim took great pride in engaging with his grandchildren, often remarking on their talents and accomplishments. Jim is survived by his brother, Ray Jundt, his loving wife of 59 years, Joann, his children, Marcus (Allyssa) Jundt, Romy (John) Erlandson, and Celeste (Mark) Argento; his eleven grandchildren, Max Jundt, Katie Jundt, Grace Lambright (Erlandson), Fred Erlandson, Henry Erlandson, Charlie Erlandson, George Erlandson, Antenella Argento, Nicholas Argento, Sophia Argento, Daniel Argento;, many nieces, nephews and extended family. He is preceded in death by his father, Tony, mother, Rosemary, and grandson, Alexander Jundt. Jim's passing marks the end of an extraordinary life, but his spirit of hard work, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and family will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, including his twelve grandchildren. He was a true gentleman, a pioneer in his field, a family man, and a good friend to many. May his memory be a lasting blessing to all fortunate enough to join him during his journey, a life well lived. Widowed years prior, Elaine rotated living with her daughters starting in June 2003. After visiting her children in Arizona for many years and leaving her community at St Mary's, Elaine relocated to Scottsdale, AZ permanently in 2013. She loved the sun and the mild winters and having so much family around. Elaine found joy being around her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a devout member of the Catholic Church, first calling St Patrick's her Scottsdale Church Community "home" and then attending Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Elaine liked to travel whether it was to go on a field trip (aka family vacation), shopping, or exploring. She was an inquisitive learner and loved meeting people. She left her family with many memories, lessons, and stories that will be shared for generations. Elaine later moved into her own place, Villa Ocotillo/Ocotillo Place, in 2016. She made many friends there by playing Bingo and winning so many games that they limited the number of times she could win. Gustavo Mendez

Gustavo Mendez

Age - 90

December 3, 2023

Gustavo (Gus) Mendez , 90 years young passed away peacefully at his Scottsdale, Arizona home early the morning of Monday November 27th while holding hands with his beloved wife and lifetime partner Elvlee (Lee) Mendez. He was born in Boling, Texas on September 14th, 1933 to Guadalupe Casares, age 28 ,and Jose Dolores Mendez, age 47. Gus is a 1951 graduate of the Bay City, Texas High School ("Black Cats"), where he played varsity football, baseball, and track. He and his wife Lee Loveday were married in Santa Clara, California on August 31st,1957. Dad was a devoted husband of 66 years, an incredible father, grandfather, and a VERY proud Marine veteran. His legacy will forever be cherished and respected by all who knew him. Gus's life truly epitomized the Core Values of the Marine Corps : Honor, Courage, and Commitment. He served his country with distinction having served in Korea 1951-1952. His valor as a self-enlisted rifleman at the age of 17 in Item Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment is respected by many to this day who fought in the foxholes alongside him employing hand-to-hand combat at the Battle of Bunker Hill , Outpost Vegas and the first Battle of the Hook. Gus proudly earned three battle stars and a Purple Heart for his valor and injuries he endured. In May of 2022, the Marine Corps Association ( Lieutenant General George W. Smith, Jr ) honored Gus for his bravery, fighting skills, and compassion for fellow Marines. After returning from his military service, Gus applied both his resourcefulness and dogged determination (GRIT) toward his education-achieving his associate degree as a medical X-Ray technician. He soon pivoted applying his learned skills to the aerospace industry where he worked for then Lockheed Missile & Space Corporation (LMSC) in Sunnyvale, California. He subsequently worked for San Francisco, California based X-Ray Engineering Corporation working in both Argentina and Saudi Arabia . Gus was then recruited to work for Pittsburgh -Des Moines Steel Co. in the role of a quality control engineer applying his X-Ray and metallurgy experience. Dad reached the pinnacle of his career when hired as a quality control engineer for the nuclear energy division of the General Electric Company serving as a quality control engineer while securing his Professional Engineer (PE) license. Gus enjoyed a passion for many things including but not limited to 1) reading non-fiction books 2) sports particularly fishing & boxing 3) eating and eating often 4) other people particularly those in need. He found lessons learned and inspiration from non-fiction books based on facts, real events- particularly those combat related , and real people such as Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell "Chesty Puller" (37 years of service; five wars combat Marine veteran). Chesty Puller remains the most decorated Marine of all time . In fact, dad respected Chesty Puller's accomplishments so much that he has named multiple generations of his canine pets "Chesty"! Dad was a patient teacher. As a young father, with modest means at best, he was able to incite innate emotional interest in the sports of fishing and boxing within each of his three sons Michael (65 years),Mark (64 years), and Matthew (60 years). His sons share these passions today with their own children. The man had a voracious appetite, if not a bottom less pit, often eating 4 or more meals a day. He enjoyed ethnic foods particularly Mexican and Chinese. He also had the world's largest, sweet tooth consuming donuts, lemon meringue and pecan pies often. He fondly admitted he was "belly driven" to be sure! Notwithstanding, he was able to stay slim and trim always. He was a loving man who never met a stranger. In his retirement days, dad frequented establishments such as Home Depot and Lowe's Home Improvement stores for the sole purpose of picking up hungry Hispanic laborers-legal or not- with the intention of taking them to lunch and put a few dollars in their pockets. Gus was a clear role model and mentor to his children as well as a friend and neighbor to many. Dad genuinely enjoyed sharing his knowledge and life experiences with others and was known for his gift of gab with anyone he encountered. In five-star hotels such as his lifetime favorite, the Bellagio Las Vegas, he seemingly was a magnet to the housekeeping staff, bellmen, doormen and on occasion mariachis. We believe he often used this as a ploy to practice his Spanish speaking and singing skills. Can you say "Tequila" !!Truly believing that "Character is Destiny for Both People and Nations", his genuine kindness , generosity and strength inspired all who knew him. Gus is survived by his wife Lee, three sons & their wives, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren as well as his brothers Daniel and Joe Mendez and sister Rosary Contreras. A Celebration of Life service to honor his long life well lived will be held at Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary Monday December 11th followed by a Committal Service at the National Veterans Cemetery . In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to https://k2adventures. org/donate in Gustavo Mendez's memory.Show more
