Nirvani Lam passed away peaceful on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at age 90. She was born on January 21, 1933 in Georgetown, Guyana to Harry and Hiriah Sukhdeo. Beloved wife of the late Derek George Lam, she was a loving mother to Darshan Whoi-Sang Lam (Maricel) and Nirvani Nyuk-lan Head (Joseph), a loving grandmother to Mia, Sy and Maisy Lam and to Louise, Helen and Jeb Henry Head. She was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews and a loving sister to her late siblings. Nirvani moved to Jamaica where she attended the University of the West Indies (UWI), graduated with a Bachelor of Economics and later an MBA. Upon completion of her MBA, she taught accounting in the MBA program at UWI. During her tenure, she spent 6 months teaching at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Once her children entered college, she moved to Washington DC to work for the InterAmerican Development Bank. After retirement, she returned to Jamaica beside her brother-in-law and niece, Brian and Kamala Lam but ultimately decided to move to Miami. Nirvani was an avid reader and lifelong lover of classical music, opera and the ballet. She loved attending cultural events and traveling extensively throughout the world, especially with her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Hardat and Angela Sukhdeo. As a devout Christian, Nirvani put her faith in God. She understood the importance and power of education. Her fiery spirit and direct statements were constant features of her personality; she never shied away from a political discussion. More than anything, Nirvani was devoted to her family. She would always emphasize "darling, family is everything". She embraced technology in order to participate in weekly zoom family gatherings, chatting with the many family members scattered throughout the world. She loved each and every one of them dearly. Her fierce love was the hallmark of who she was-mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and matriarch. She will truly be missed.
