Unita Pope Hayden, 89, formerly of Greensboro, NC retiring in Morehead City in 2005, died and is at peace with the Lord on Monday, November 6, 2023. Born in Kernersville, NC, daughter of the late loving Omer and Alma Pope. Unita was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City serving in the Women's Circle and New Horizons group for the disabled who met weekly in the church for fellowship. Unita, first and foremost was an unconditional loving dedicated mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and dedicated Band Director in the Greensboro Public School System. Quite possibly the first or of the group, of the first women Band Directors in Guilford County until she retired in 1995. She was a member of the Women's Band Directors National Association, Lifetime member of the National Educators Association, Graduate of East Carolina University and member of Delta Kappa Gamma as well as other teaching accolades during her tenure while involved with the church(s) she attended as organist and choir director. Surviving are her son, Jeffrey Reeves Hayden; daughter, Jennifer Hayden Callahan and husband, Michael; granddaughters; Brianna Fletcher and husband Justin; great grandchildren Abby and Carter; granddaughter Chelsea Callahan, and granddaughter Rosemary West. Unita's loving siblings are her brothers, O. N. Pope and wife Gail Pope who recently passed and is in the Lord's care, and their family. Her other brother; Col. D. Brent Pope Sr. and wife Hiromi and their family, and Unita's sister, Donna Pope Giles Atkins and husband, Mike Atkins and their family. Including surviving, numerous loving nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of Unita's life will be held at 2:00 p. m. , Saturday, December 9, 2023 in the Lineberry Center at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Emerald Isle- Wilma Mae Smith, 86, passed away at Carteret Healthcare in Morehead City on Monday, November 6, 2023. She was born September 15, 1937 in Harrisburg, Pa a daughter of the late Walter William and Alma Burns Watcher. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Saturday November 11, 2023 at Emerald Isle Baptist Church with Rev. Freddie Braswell officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8pm at Jones Funeral Home-Swansboro. Wilma was an elementary school teacher in NY state and loved to see the faces of the children light up when they understood what she was trying to teach them. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family and friends. She is survived by son, Douglas Smith and his wife, LuAnn of Derby, NY; grandchildren, Cory Vigrass, Chloelyn Vigrass, Hannah Smith, and Emme Smith; great grandchildren, Hudson and Oliver Vigrass. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Smith and her daughter, Bambilyn Vigrass. Emily June Lewis, age 90, was called home on October 19. She passed peacefully with her daughters, Reene Kratky and Debbie Hill, by her side. June lived a life to serve others. Family and friendship were her foundation. She loved to send cards for all occasions and words of support to those in their time of need. She also found purpose by providing a safe haven for children as she ran an in-home daycare for many years. She was recognized around town as one of "the sisters. " They loved to sing together at church, go to lunch and shop at thrift stores. Forever she will be remembered by many as Mama June, to some as Grandma and to two as Mama. Although she will be deeply missed here on earth, we know in our hearts that Papa Doc and your siblings greeted her at the gates. She is survived by her two daughters, Reene Kratky (husband Bill) and Debbie Hill; sister, Carol Bielby; a brother, Larry Eubanks; five grandchildren, Chris Dudley (Lauren), Kevin Dudley (Amanda), Heather Henderson (William), Jason Kratky (Sarah) and Wendy Pesch (Jason); eleven great grandchildren Kayla, Shane, Will, Brooks, Jillian, Peyton, Jackson, Ayden, Bryden, Harrison and Greyson; a great great granddaughter, Jada. She was preceded in death by her husband William Lloyd Lewis (Doc); parents, Jack and Lula.
