LOYAL FRIEND AND ANIMAL LOVERElizabeth “Betty” V. (Fumire) Germinaro, age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, March 1, 2024. She was the devoted wife of the late Vincent Germinaro. Born in Waterbury on November 16, 1938, Betty was the daughter of the late Roy and Helen (Rebar) Fumire. She was a graduate of Wilby High School. While she worked as a legal secretary for many years for several local attorneys, Betty most enjoyed her time as “First Mate” and “Driver” to her husband Vinnie, the Deputy Sheriff. Betty was a longtime member of and a familiar face at The Waterbury Club and The Country Club of Waterbury. A loving, funny, and gentle soul, Betty was lovingly referred to as a “friend magnet.” She made friends with everyone and leaves a family of friends who will miss her dearly. In addition to befriending people, Betty never met a 4-legged creature she did not love. She fed every animal that entered her yard, and adopted most homeless or feral cats who crossed her path. Betty is survived by Richarda “Riki” Chovau of Middlebury whom she considered her adopted daughter; her grandson Vincent DellaCamera and his wife Donna of Waterbury; and her great-grandson Michael Della Camera of Waterbury as well as several generations of cousins, extended family, and many friends. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 from 9:00 – 11:00am with a service beginning at 11:00am at Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury. Waterbury Festim Meraku, 60, passed away on Friday morning, March 1, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Luljeta (Qazimllari) Meraku. Festim was born May 29, 1963, in Bilisht, Albania, son of the late Istref and Rahime (Braho) Meraku. In addition to his wife he leaves his son, Enea Meraku of Waterbury; his daughter, Marsela Meraku of San Diego, CA; his brother, Raimond Meraku of Albania; three sisters, Zana Meraku, Aurela Meraku and Rukie Meraku, all of Albania; two grandchildren, Thomas and Tristan Lanier and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be Tuesday morning, March 5, at 11:00 A.M. at the Bergin Funeral Home 290 East Main St. Waterbury. Friends may visit with Festim’s family from 9:30 A.M. until time of service. "Devoted to his family WATERBURY - Nelson Velez Sr., age 80, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and comfort of his family on Thursday, February 29, 2024, in the Vitas Inpatient Unit of St. Mary’s Hospital. He was the devoted husband of the late Gloria (Correa) Velez. Nelson was born on April 8, 1943, in Penuelas, Puerto Rico, the son of the late Hipolita and Leonor (Pabey) Velez. He was educated in P.R. before immigrating to Waterbury where he worked for many years as a machine operator at the Waterbury Companies before retiring. Nelson was devoted to his family and his faith, and he enjoyed word puzzles and watching old cowboy movies but most of all, spending as much time as possible with his family. He will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him. Left behind to cherish his memory are his children; Nelson Velez Jr. and his wife, Lucia, Deb Velez and her fiancé, Jay Costanzo, Lisette Ibraimov and her partner, Cubby Alvarado, and Robert Velez and his fiancé, Amber Amos. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, his siblings: Pedro Velez, Milagros Velez, Edwin Velez, several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. Nelson was predeceased by his children; Alan and Daniel and his siblings, Hiriam, Hipolito Jr and Neraida Velez Funeral services for Mr. Velez will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 1987 East Main St., Waterbury. Beloved Teacher and FriendRose Marie Panaccione, born in Waterbury, CT on September 2, 1931, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on February 29, 2024 at the age of 92. Rose received her Teaching Degree from Southern Connecticut State College in 1954 along with her Master’s Degree in Education from Fairfield University in 1959. She started teaching First Grade at Washington School on Baldwin Street in 1954 where she retired 38 years later in June of 1992. Through the years, she taught an estimated 700 students who brought her much joy to see learn and grow. During her teaching career, Rose was an active participant in many organizations including the Waterbury Teacher’s Association, Waterbury Retired Teachers’ Association, National Education Association, American Association of University Women, Connecticut Education Association, “The Good Chair” at Washington School, Representative of Washington School Teachers, and temporary Acting Principal at Washington School.Rose was a lifetime parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church where she was an active member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Auxiliary and was an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. Rose was a woman of great faith, kindness and compassion and truly loved by countless people. When she was not busy with her many professional activities, she loved reading, traveling, and cooking for all of her loved ones. Though she enjoyed her many travels throughout the world, time spent at the shore was truly a favorite.Daughter of the late Ernest and Maria Panaccione, Rose is survived by her loving sister, Anna M. Panaccione of Waterbury, and the countless friends and family members by whom she was cherished and will be greatly missed.Her family wishes to thank her wonderful caregivers who brought comfort and laughter to her during her illness. Rose was a very special woman who was admired and adored by those who knew her. Friends are invited to call from 9:00 am – 10:00 am at Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury on Monday, March 4, 2024. Waterbury, CTVilma Santopietro“Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother”Mrs. Vilma (Valletta) Santopietro, 94, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 29, 2024 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of Donald J. Santopietro.Vilma was born in Waterbury on July 5, 1929, daughter of the late Joseph and Rosalie (Grillo) Valletta. She attended local schools having graduated from Leavenworth High School. She started her long culinary career with her husband Donald with a hot dog stand on Thomaston Avenue in Waterbury. They moved on to open Sandys Restaurant in the same area of Thomaston Avenue later adding Sandy’s Catering starting in the basement. Ultimately, they expanded to the banquet facility “The Castilian Room” which they successfully ran for many years until their retirement. Vilma was a very accomplished baker, and she designed and created all the wedding cakes for the banquet hall customers. She eventually saw a need for a reliable source of bridal accessories and favors so, she opened her first gift shop called the Stone House Gift Shop, which quickly outgrew that location and thus expanded into the all-inclusive Vilma’s Gift Shoppe.Vilma was a member of the Red Hat Society and the daughters of Rebekah. She loved traveling, especially to Italy. She was interested with flying airplanes and studied for her pilot’s license. Having made it all the way to her final solo flight which she chose not to complete. Vilma loved spending time with her close-knit family and was a proud and devoted homemaker and mother amongst all her other accomplishments. She loved to travel and visited many locations in Europe and the far east, but her favorite place by far, was Italy. She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.Vilma leaves to honor and cherish her memory; two daughters, Julie Cardoso and her husband Augie of Plymouth and Donna Bryk of Waterbury; a son, Alan J. Santopietro and his fiancé Danyale Hubbard of Waterbury with whom she lived; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Santopietro of Vernon; two sisters, Maria Mikletonas of Prospect and Diane Gule of Thomaston; eight grandchildren, Lisa Breton and her husband Kevin of Waterbury, Anthony Cardoso and his wife Jessica of Cuddebackville, NY, Clarissa Santopietro and her wife Erica of East Haven, Kara Santopietro and her husband Saul Lopez of Clinton, Elizabeth Johnson and her husband Matthew of Newington, Alyssa Shultz and her husband Richard, Jr. of East Haven, Caitlin Pavone and her husband Dylan of East Haven, and Bianca Zacharias of North Haven; ten great grandchildren, Kaiya Breton, Joseph Breton, Ethan Lopez, Gianna Lopez, Orion Kirby, Rowan Johnson, Nik Shultz, Liam Shultz, Griffin Cardoso, and Arden Cardoso. She was predeceased by; a son, Anthony J. Santopietro; a son-in-law, Anthony E. In addition to his mother, he is survived by four brothers, Jorge Astacio of Waterbury, Miguel Astacio of MA, Alfredo Astacio of Waterbury and Juan E. Jorge of Waterbury; two sisters, Rosa Sanabria of PR and Iris Astacio of Waterbury and many nieces and nephews, including Aileen Perna (Cruz) and Benjamin Medina.

He had a passion for dirt bikes and quads, finding joy in the thrill of the open road and the freedom they brought. Francisco had a huge heart and a deep love for animals, often seen caring for and rescuing those in need. His kindness and compassion touched the lives of many. The loss of Francisco leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him. His memory will live on as a testament to his resilience, dedication, and love for his family and friends. We will forever cherish the moments shared and the impact he made on our lives.
