TAFURI, Nicola, age 85, of North Haledon, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. Nicola was born in Sala Consilina, Italy to Giuseppe and Rosa (Casale) Tafuri. He came to the United States in 1958 where he settled in Paterson, New Jersey. He has been a resident of North Haledon since 1972. Nicola married the love of his life, Maria Valentino, and they cherished 60 years of loving marriage together. Before his retirement, Nicola worked as a crane operator for V. Ottilio & Sons in Paterson. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Paul's RC Church in Prospect Park. Beloved husband of Maria Tafuri of North Haledon. Loving father of Rose Tafuri and her husband Raymond Cifelli, Sandra Tafuri and her husband Andy Del Vecchio, and Nick Tafuri and his wife Kathleen. Cherished grandfather to Matthew, Michael, Gabriel, Cassandra, Joseph, Logan, and Greyson. He also leaves behind 5 siblings. Family and friends may visit the Tafuri family on Monday, October 9, 2023, from 4 - 7 PM at the Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes. SCIALLA, Robert A. , age 82, of North Haledon, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Robert was born and raised in Paterson, NJ to Anthony and Josephine (Salomone) Scialla. After graduating from Paterson Technical High School, Bob served his country proudly by enlisting in the U. S. Air Force Reserve. He married Carole Twomey to whom he had been married for 58 years, before she passed away in May of this year. As a young adult, Bob resided in North Haledon, later building his own home with his wife Carole in 1968 where they raised their family and led active lives together in the town. He began his professional career as a union carpenter and eventually started his own business, Bob Scialla Building Contractor, where he was self-employed for many years. After completing many construction projects for the owners of Capezio Ballet Makers, Inc. in Totowa, NJ, he was hired full time by the company on December 6, 1982 as their in-house Carpenter. He took much pride in his work there and held multiple positions such as Safety Supervisor and Corporate Facilities Manager before retiring on April 5, 2019. Bob was a member on the North Haledon School District Board of Education for several years and was very active with the recreation department where he was instrumental in fundraising and coaching many sports. He also constructed multiple facilities for the rec department and the town. One of his favorite accomplishments was the establishment of the North Haledon archery program, which he coached for 45 years. He loved hunting and fishing and continuing his family tradition of making wine with his children and grandchildren. He was extremely proud of being recognized at the Corrado's Amateur Wine Making Competition year after year where he won many medals for his homemade wine and was named Corrado Amateur Winemaker of the Year in 2003. Above all, family was his greatest passion--spending time with his children, grandchildren, and beloved wife was what Bob valued most in life. Robert is survived by his loving children, Dara Roca and her husband Rande, Robert Scialla, Jr. and his wife Margaretann, David Scialla and his wife Diana, and Mark Scialla and his wife Kristine. Devoted grandfather, aka Pa, to 14 loving grandchildren; Christian, Dominic, Alena, Eric, Nicholas, Anthony, Joseph, Ryan, Amanda, Alana, Alexa, Olivia, Adriana, and Mark Jr. Family and friends may visit the Scialla family on Sunday, November 5, 2023, from 2 - 6 p. m. at the Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes. A Funeral mass will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 10 AM at St. Paul's RC Church, 286 Haledon Avenue, Prospect Park, NJ. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa. Dykstra, Lenore (nee: Bosland), age 88, of Hawthorne, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Born and raised in Paterson, Lenore had lived in Hawthorne for 28 years before moving to Midland Park for 20 years. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse, starting at the Christian Sanitarium in Wyckoff and then for Van Dyk Manor in Ridgewood. Lenore had been a member of the old 4th Christian Reformed Church in Paterson. She then became a member of the Trinity Christian Reformed Church in North Haledon and has remained a member as the church transitioned to Covenant Christian Reformed Church and now Rockpoint Community Church. Lenore served her church community as a Bible School teacher, as head of the Calvinettes, and President of the Mary and Martha Society. For many years, she also served as a President of the Florence Christian Home Auxiliary in Wayne. Lenore was the beloved wife of the late Frank Dykstra (2007). Loving mother of Douglas Dykstra and his wife Judith of Fair Lawn, Donald Dykstra and his wife Lisa of North Haledon, Dale Dykstra and his wife Nicolle of Chandler, AZ and Darlene Viering and her husband Robert of Hewitt. Dear grandmother of Brad Dykstra, Andrew Dykstra, Tracey Sharples and her husband Brian, Jamie Martinez and her husband Bryant, Allison Snyder and her husband Ryan, Eric Dykstra and his wife Jessica, Steven Dykstra, Adam Dykstra and his wife Kelly, Brianna Viering and Abigail Viering. Dearest great-grandmother of Bradley, Jackson, Brian and Emery. Lenore was predeceased by her brother, Leonard Bosland (2021). A funeral service will be held at 10:30am Monday, October 30, 2023 at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne, NJ 07506. Interment will follow at Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Fair Lawn. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-7pm. ZUCCARO, Carmelo "Giovanni", age 81, of North Haledon, died on October 1, 2023. Born and raised in Marineo, Sicily-Italy for 26 years, he settled in Garfield moving to North Haledon in 1997. Giovanni was a mason all of his life, both in Italy and America. He owned and operated John Zuccaro Masonry in North Haledon and Garfield retiring in 2010, he was a parishioner of Mt. Virgin Church and a member of the St. Ciro Society, Garfield. Giovanni is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Francesca (nee Randazzo) in 2022, his parents, Giuseppe and Girolama Zuccaro, his sister, Cira D'Angelo, and brothers-in-law, Ciro Randazzo, Giuseppe Arrigo and Francesco Princiotta. He is survived by three beloved children, Maria Sole and husband Sossio, Rosemarie Gaccione and husband Paul, and Giuseppe and wife Maria, nine adored grandchildren, Joseph (Stephanie), John (Megan), Steven, Gabriella, Marissa, Francesca, P. J. , Lucianna, and Giuseppe, a great-grandson, Giovanni, and his siblings, Antonina Randazzo, Graziella Arrigo, Carmela Novello, Maria Arrigo and Francesca Princiotta. Visiting Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral is Friday, October 6, 2023, arriving at the Aloia Funeral Home at 10 am followed by an 11 am mass at Our Lady of Mt. Virgin RC Church, Garfield. Carmelo Salvatore Valenti, age 90, of North Haledon peacefully passed away Friday, September 29, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Carmelo was born November 23, 1932 in, Sicily, Italy. He is the son of the late Paolo and Sebastiana Valenti. He came to the United States in 1947 and settled in Paterson, NJ. He has lived in North Haledon most of his life. Sal proudly served his county in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement he was the owner of Valenti's Bakery in Paterson for 48 years. Sal was a parishioner of St. Anthony's RC Church in Hawthorne. He enjoyed spending time with his paisans and family as a member of the Solarino club. His passion was learning about health and vitamins and sharing his knowledge with everyone he knew. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards with family and friends every weekend. He also enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden every summer and watching western movies every night. He was predeceased by his wife the late Anna Valenti. (2017). Loving father of his two daughters: Nella Nakonechny and her husband William of Oakland, NJ, Tina Benevenga and her husband Blaise of North Haledon, NJ and his two sons: Paul Valenti and his wife Mary Ann of North Haledon, NJ, and Antonio Valenti and his wife Lamia of North Haledon, NJ. Cherished grandfather of Anna Burgan, Jaclyn Velez, Nicole Nakonechny, Joey Nakonechny, Bianca Boggi, Tiana Benevenga, Blaise Benevenga, Tiffany Benevenga, Paul Valenti and Rose Valenti. Beloved great grandfather of Zaid Burgan, Ayman Burgan and Gianluca Boggi. Brother of the late Angela Mangiafico, the late Carmela Tommasi, the late Joseph Valenti and surviving Paul Valenti Services are pending.
