Nicholas Angelo Nero, 71 of Sumter, South Carolina and formerly of Jefferson Boro died at home August 8, 2023. Born November 4, 1951, he was the son of the late Domenick Nero and Lucille (LaValle) Nero of Jefferson Boro. Nick was a 1970 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and a decortated veteran of 22 years in the United States Air Force. Nick was very active in American Legion Post 15 of Sumter, serving as commander, adjutant, and historian as well as chairing the Sumter County Fair Commission hotsted by Post 15. As a member of the Sumter County Garden Club, he was a certified master gardener and helped beautify his community, Nick was also a member of the Clariton Anglers club, where he spent much of his summer time with his family. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 35 years, Elaine; sisters Karen (Michael) Dougherty of Jefferson, Lori (James) Banner of Boise, Idaho, and Mary DiLonardo of Rostraver; as well as many nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial with military honors took place in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, South Carolina. Memorial donations may be made to American Legion Post 15, P. O. Ralph Geddings, Sr. and the late Lily Inez Timmons Geddings. He was employed as a driver for Hodge Trucking Company and was a member of Family Worship Assembly in Coward. Survivors include his wife; a son, Alton R. Geddings, III (Jessie); two stepdaughters; nine grandchildren, Michael Ryan Geddings (Kayla), Lily Inez Geddings, Alie Mae Geddings, Nathaniel Lee Geddings, Noah Matthew Geddings, Kaden Herron, Grayson Herron, Emerson Sealey, and Finnlyn Sealey; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Osteen (Ricky); a brother, Ronald Geddings (Vicki); and several nieces and nephews. Wilson McGregor MacEwen, Jr. , 76, died Friday, December 1, 2023, at home. Born in Macon, Ga, he was a son of the late Wilson McGregor MacEwen and Dorothy Virginia Smith MacEwen. Mr. MacEwen graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration with major in Accounting in 1968 and the University School of Law with Juris Doctor in 1970. He began his career with Arthur Anderson and Co. in Charlotte and later established the firm of Wilson MacEwen and Company in 1975 and remained the managing partner until his death, along with his long-time partner Jeff Leighton, who joined the firm in 1990. The company headquarters were designed by his uncle Bo MacEwen, an architect from Tampa, Fl. Wilson was a Certified Public Accountant admitted to practice before the U. S. Tax Court. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the S. C. Association of Certified Public Accountants (SCACPA), the N. C. Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA), the American Bar Association (ABA), a member of the National Bank of South Carolina Board of Directors since 1984, subsequently, a member of the S. C. Synovus Bank Board of Directors, a former member of the Tuomey Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees, a former member of the USC Educational Foundation- Sumter Partnership, a former board member of the Sumter Little Theater and the Gallery of Arts. He was the comptroller and advisor to the Williams-Brice-Edwards Charitable Trust and was a longtime dedicated advisor and friend to Mr. Phil Edwards and Mr. Frank Edwards. Wilson was a former member of the Palmetto Rotary Club, an Eagle Scout and an avid University of Georgia Bulldogs fan. Georgia Elizabeth Jeffords Elmore, 99, widow of Robert Carroll Elmore, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Covenant Place Nursing Center. She and Carroll were married 25 days short of 60 years when he died June 26, 2011, he was the love of her life. Born December 18, 1923, in Florence, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Samuel King Jeffords, Sr. , and Josie Mae Smith Jeffords, and was a step-daughter of Mary Juanita Sumner Jeffords. Mrs. Elmore was a member of First Baptist Church of Sumter, after having been a member of Elliott Baptist Church while living in Elliott, S. C. She graduated from Elliott High School. She had worked for Southern Bell Telephone as a telephone operator, until she was pregnant with her daughter. She then went to work for her mother-in-law Johnsie Smith Elmore who created and owned Jo-El Sandwich Company. Georgia later bought the Jo-El Sandwich Company and ran the company for 19 years, until she retired and sold it to Perfection Baker. Georgia loved to garden and bake and decorate cakes for family birthday celebrations. She is survived by her daughter, Josie Mae Elmore of Sumter, a sister Mary Jeffords Hoyt of Sumter, a brother, Arthur Sumner Jeffords (Jean) of Knoxville, Tennessee and a sister-in-law Jean Elmore Smith of Charleston, brother-in-law Len Caughman of Bishopville, sister-in-law Francis Smith Norris (Edward) of Greeleyville, numerous nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews as well as great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, brother and sisters-in-law, Samuel King Jeffords, Jr. (Margaret), William Quincy Jeffords, Sr. (Hazel). Brothers-in-law George Edward Smith, and Major Richard Alan Hoyt. Sister-in-law Virigina Elmore Caughman. It is with great sympathy and sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Kenneth Charles Onofri on Monday, November 27th, 2023, at the young age of 60. Born on July 20th, 1963, in Newfoundland, Canada, Ken was the eldest son of Marjorie Josephine Perkins and the late Daniel Thomas Onofri. He attended Hillcrest High School in Dalzell, SC and was employed by Steve Hendrix Construction for over 20 years. Ken acquired the nickname "Rhino" from his long-time co-workers and was known for his hard work ethic. "Rhino" was not Ken's only nickname; he was known by his beloved grandchildren as "Pop-Pop". Ken enjoyed taking his Harley out on the open road, he spent a lot of time making sure it was well kempt and squeaky clean. To relax, you would find Ken watching NASCAR, hockey, other sports, and old classic television shows. Ken is survived by his son Casey Onofri (Erika); daughters Kristen Onofri and Amber Floyd; grandchildren, William Williams IV, Madalyn Onofri, Jordyn Welch, Casey Tate Onofri, Bristal McKuhen, and Rylee Welch; sisters, Tina Bowen (John), Karen Jagoda, and Samantha Hale; many loved nieces and nephews; numerous friends and family; and lifelong friend Stephen Hendrix Sr. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association, P. "Emma Lucile Moore Gathers, 99, was born on November 21, 1923, in Sumter County, South Carolina to Jacob Washington Moore, Sr. , and Pernelope Brown Pinckney Moore. Affectionately known as "Lucile" to her family and friends, she was the youngest of nine siblings. Mrs. Gathers peacefully entered eternal rest with her Lord on Friday, November 17, 2023 at National Healthcare, Sumter. Emma "Lucile" lived a full and rich Christian life while she served her church and community. She was a woman of faith, wisdom, strength and knowledge, and consistently helped others that were in need of an encouraging word or resources. Lucile was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Lincoln High School in Sumter. She received her B. A. Degree in Elementary Education from Allen University, Columbia, SC. Lucile continued her educational pursuit and received a M. A. degree in Education from the University of Indiana. She taught at DeLaine Elementary School for 33 years. Lucile accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She worshipped and served the Christian community as a member of Wayman Chapel A. M. E. Church, Sumter. Lucile was an active member of the Sunday School Class #1, Stewardess Board, Missionary Society and a Trustee. Professionally, she was a life member of the National Educator's Association, the South Carolina State Education Association, and the Sumter County Retired Educator's Association. In addition to her parents, Lucile was preceded in death by her husband, David Gathers; seven siblings: Julius Pinckney, Louise Pinckney Bolden, Elnora Pinckney Palmer, James Pinckney, John Pinckney, Mary E. Pinckney Ragins, and Katherine Pinckney Spann. Those left to cherish her fond memories are daughter: Jocelyn G. Drakeford of Silver Spring, MD; two grandchildren: Gui R. Drakeford of Laurel, MD, and Janelle S. Drakeford of Odenton, MD; one great-grandchild: Samya M. Drakeford (Lamesha Harrison-mother); one brother: Jacob W. Leslie Gregory "Hoss" Woodham, 83, husband of Margurite Rogers Woodham, died peacefully Saturday, November 25, 2023, in his home surrounded by family. Born January 5, 1940, in the St. Charles community of Lee County, he was the son of the late Leslie English Woodham and the late Mary Pansy Watts Hatfield. Mr. Woodham was a member of Southside Baptist Church. He was an ordained deacon who loved and served the Lord faithfully. He retired from American National Can Corporation in Bishopville. Affectionately known as "Coach", he was a dedicated Little League baseball coach in Bishopville for many years. He also served in the Lions Club and Jaycees and was a friend to all he met. Mr. Woodham graduated from Bishopville High School where he was an exceptional football player. He enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia and was an avid South Carolina Gamecocks Fan. Survivors in addition to his wife of 28 years include five children, Dee Alice Woodham Timmons (Karl) of Gilbert, Tammy Woodham Irhin (Steve) of Fort Mill, Mickie Woodham Bollinger (John) of Charleston, Timothy N. Tyner (Rhonda) of Conway, Donna L. Rogers of Sumter; ten grandchildren, K. Stuart Timmons (Karli), Tyler Timmons (Charlotte), Austin Timmons, Morgan Irhin, Alex Irhin, Gracie Bollinger, Collin Bollinger, Bennett Bollinger, Timmy Tyner (Shelby), and Brandon Rogers; 12 great grandchildren, one sister, and one brother, Wayne Woodham (Connie). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 32 years, Nancy Horton Woodham; and two sisters, Ara Newman, and Dale Uggiano. Funeral services will be held at 12 p. m. Ruby Hopkins Watts, 86, widow of Edward B. "Junior" Watts, Jr. , died Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at her home. Born November 12, 1937, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Laurie Lonnie Hopkins and the late Bessie Lyles Hopkins. She was a former member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and was currently a member of Lewis Chapel Methodist Church. She was a faithful wife and a very dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a faithful servant of God. Survivors include her children, Gayle Watts Charles (Edward) of Sumter and Donnie Watts (Traci) of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Richie Brogdon, Johnny Watts (Beth), Ashley Brogdon Welch (Lance), Gracen Watts Feagin (Madison), and Dalton Watts; great-grandchildren, Hunter Brogdon, Ansley Welch, Cayden Brogdon, Caroline Welch, John Riley Watts, and Delaney Watts; sisters, Jean Hopkins Smith, Linda Hopkins Kelly, and Mae Hopkins Cuco; a special daughter-in-law, B. J. Watts; and a special granddaughter, Stacy Hanisch. She was preceded in death by two sons, Johnny Ray Watts and Richard Dan Watts, and brothers, Lonnie Hopkins, Burchmore Hopkins, Bill Hopkins, Tommy Hopkins, Bobby Hopkins, and Marshall Hopkins.
