Joan was a graduate of Bishop Noll Institute Class of 1957, then attended Alverno College. Joan and her husband, Marty, were extremely proud of their children, 4 engineers and 1 nurse. In their young adult years, Joan and Marty were proud to have participated in Cursillo, a Catholic retreat focused on teaching laypeople to be effective Christian leaders. It was during this retreat that Joan and Marty honed their Christian leadership skills and developed many of their closest lifelong friendships. A devoted and faith-filled volunteer, Joan demonstrated commitment to giving back to others. Joan was a founding supporter of the Share Foundation, taking a lead role in their annual BlackTie Gala and Leprechaun Hunt. Joan was also a 50+ year member of St. Thomas More Church, where she volunteered as a teacher of religious education, delivered for Meals on Wheels, and served at the St. Joseph Soup Kitchen. In her “spare time” while raising her family, Joan ran a small family business, Holiday Enterprises. Joan and Marty owned a series of Winnebago motor homes which she rented to other families when not used by her own. This enterprise funded numerous family vacations as well as facilitated many “Family Campouts”, weekend camping trips to Jellystone Park that were attended by many of their close friends and neighbors. During retirement Joan enjoyed travelling with Marty and other friends, going to grandchildren’s school and afterschool activities, hosting grandchildren and grand dogs, and socializing with her friends at Hartsfield Village. Always an avid reader, Joan read non-stop during her later years. Joan’s family will be forever grateful for the dedicated team at the Hospice of the Calumet Area and the Riley House for their unwavering care and compassion. And Steven Nowaczyk of Tempe, AZ; and great grandson Brooks Perkins. Also survived by niece Nancy Feldman; nephew Roy Niksich; niece Suzanne Tompa. Preceded in death by his parents John and Praxeda Nowaczyk; sisters Delores Nowaczyk, Audrey Limbert, and Nancy Spasoff. Mel grew up in Chicago and graduated from Bowen High School. He worked as a union Lithographer (in the printing industry his job was known as a stripper), retiring in 1998 after 39 years. Mel and Shirley moved from Hegewisch to Calumet City in 1969 and raised their family there before moving to Munster. Mel was a thrifty man who loved tools, could fix almost anything, and was always willing to help anyone. After having his new Calumet City garage built, he immediately purchased a vise for his work bench and installed an old oil heater because he was tired of working on cars in the cold. He then built an air compressor from parts he collected, later he purchased a welder, and as his means grew so did his collection of tools. He always said, “without tools you can’t fix anything”. Always curious he took on many new interests such as tropical fish, the very large model train layout he built in his Calumet City basement, and his legendary tomato garden with 8-foot plants tied to stakes. In his fifties he took on cooking, starting with his mother’s recipes for oxtail and chicken soup. His 6-gallon soup pot was the talk of family and friends and another testament to his thriftiness as bulk was always less expensive. He went on to cook many new delicious dishes and at 80 he discovered the wok. He used a wok to cook almost every meal for the last 5 years of his life. Mel was also a proud member of the National Rifle Association. Services will be private and in lieu of flowers a memorial donation can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org. Grober November 6, 1936 - February 4, 2024 Our dear mother, Margaret Ann Grober, age 87 of Munster, IN, passed away on February 4th,2024, surrounded by family. Raised in Northeast Iowa, Margaret was the oldest of four children born to Walter and Evelyn Haugen. She went to Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa, to become a nurse, a trailblazer in her time for leaving her small-town farming community, to pursue an education and career. Margaret married Vincent on August 22nd, 1959, in Alta Vista, Iowa. They moved to Seneca, Illinois, right after they married and began their family and had seven children: Jenny Freeman (Mark), Jeff Grober (Deb), Mike Grober (Rita), Mary Turner (Joe), Julie Ylo (Chris), JoEllyn Bross (Michael), and Tom Grober (Elizabeth). They lived in Seneca for 58 years. Margaret was a surgical nurse and later an occupational nurse until retirement. An active member in her community, she was instrumental on the park board and in the development in Crotty Park, as well as the LST Memorial in Seneca. Margaret was particularly active with St. Patrick’s Catholic church – always available to help whenever needed. Throughout their life, Margaret and Vince experienced many adventurous travels, both abroad and stateside. They had trips to Germany, Peru, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Arizona, and many more. Margaret and Vince loved visiting with friends and family. In retirement, they especially loved visiting their children and grandchildren, always there to watch the grandkids, paint a room, dig a garden – anything their family needed. Margaret and Vince were married for 52 years before Vince passed away in November of 2011. In 2017, when an opportunity presented itself for Margaret to live closer to family, she moved to Munster, Indiana. She found a new church home attending daily mass at St. Thomas More Church, where she made many wonderful friends, especially her breakfast club gals. She is survived by her seven children, 23 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. We’ll dearly miss having a glass of wine with her on the porch, her customary salad with dinner, biscuits and gravy on Sunday mornings, and her famous corn at Thanksgiving. Her absence will be deeply felt each and every day, but the memories of her are a blessing to all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to your favorite charity in honor of Margaret. To send flowers to the family or place a tree in memory of Margaret A. Susan was born in Griffith, Indiana to the late Clarence and Willamine (Tompkins) Schreiner. She was lucky to share her happy childhood with her two sisters, Karen Joyce (Terrence Joyce) and Lynn Ogle (Richard Ogle), giggling, walking on homemade stilts, and vacationing across the country. She was a graduate of Griffith High School (1961), and Ball State University (1965) where she earned her Bachelor’s degree as a Speech Language Pathologist. She enjoyed a fulfilling career, retiring from Nathan Hale Elementary School in Whiting, Indiana (2014). Susan met her lifelong partner, friend and husband, J. Dan Lazar when they were 12 years old in Griffith. Sharing a marriage (November 1965) many called the “lifelong honeymoon”, they settled in Munster, IN after living in Hawaii and Venezuela. They raised two children, JD Lazar of Hammond, IN and Dana Stewart (Trent Stewart) of Indianapolis, IN. Travels as a family and couple included awe-inspiring visits to Oregon, Italy, and Germany. Susan (aka “Mimi”) lavished love and time on her grandson, Landon Stewart. She created memories of Chicago museum experiences, South Shore train rides, and attending sporting events that brought her such joy during her retirement. Susan lit up when she was surrounded by those she loved, including a lifetime of friends. Her bright smile shone most when hosting friends or family dinners; playing board games (try to beat her at Boggle!), making lasagna and sharing belly laughs at family reunions; or snowplowing at 1 mph down an easy Michigan ski slope with her friend laughing while the kids zipped by. Simply being together was Susan’s greatest joy. It didn’t matter what the activity was; it just mattered that you were there. Susan was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Schreiner and mother, Willamine Schreiner Tompkins. Funeral Services will be held on February 24, 2024 (11:00 a.m-3:00 p.m.) with a celebration of life ceremony at 1:00 p.m. at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN.
