Nancy Rae Haistings (Plumb), a woman of great heart and spirit, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2023, at the age of 84. She was born on December 8, 1938, in Bellingham, Washington, to Ruth Elizabeth Plumb (Garside) and Raymond Leonard Plumb. Nancy grew up in Seattle, alongside her younger brother Michael Brian Plumb. She attended Holy Names Academy, where she was an active and vibrant young woman, participating in competitive swimming and a variety of other activities. Nancy's zest for life was evident from a young age. She enjoyed water skiing with her younger brother and was never afraid to stand up for him when needed. Her tomboy spirit was tempered by a strong sense of dignity and grace, which remained with her throughout her life. Later in life, Nancy achieved a cherished accomplishment by completing college in her 50s. Nancy married Grover James Haistings on February 8, 1959, and together they had four boys: Stephan, Kevin, Michael, and Daniel. Though their marriage ended in divorce, Nancy remained a dedicated single mother who exposed her sons to a wide range of activities, including hiking, swimming, camping, skiing, and even ski patrolling. She also led scouting trips at a time when it was still taboo for women to do so. Her goal was always to do the best she could for her children and others. In addition to raising her children, Nancy dedicated her time and talent to helping others. She taught Red Cross classes, volunteered as a ski patroller for over 45 years, and planned, cooked, and served food to those in need at the University District. She learned her love of the water and outdoors from her parents, who owned many boats over the years, and continued that love by sailing and crewing on racing sailboats. She even taught sailing lessons and ventured out on blue water sailing adventures. Nancy's adventurous spirit extended to her love of dance, which led her to join various dance groups, make costumes, and perform locally and internationally. Her activities were a reflection of her desire to experience the beauty of living and to help others along the way. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her niece, Michele. She is survived by her four sons and their families, including eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her zest for life, her dedication to her family and community, and her adventurous spirit. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to "Alzhiemer Foundation" or " Behind the Badge Foundation". Details of Nancy's celebration of life will be shared at a later date.
