Myrna was born on October 3, 1936 in Osceola, Iowa. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1954 and went on to graduate from the Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1955. Myrna continued advanced training at Ottumwa Hospital School of Radiological Technicians where she graduated in 1957. She worked as an X-ray Technician in Fairfield, IA, Miami, FL, Atlanta GA and Naperville, IL. When Myrna retired in 1993, she was the Patient Representative at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL. Myrna was united in marriage to James L. Newkirk, Sr. on September 2, 1961 in Osceola, Iowa and two children blessed this union, James Jr. and Susan. Myrna and Jim retired to the mountains of Hendersonville, NC having later moved to New Jersey and Falmouth, Maine to be with their family. During their retirement she enjoyed traveling with their dear friends Sandy and Joe Phelan and: being a member of the Red Hats, playing Mah Jongg and May-I weekly. Myrna bowled in a league when her children were young and she was still Wi bowling. Myrna was a member of the Presbyterian Church where she was active in Church Circle, Bible Study and served as a member of the Board of Deacons. Myrna was a kind, caring, compassionate person - always helpful to others and selfless in her acts. Her perpetual smile and positive outlook will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Claude Patterson and Ruth Pauline Patterson; and her brother, Merle Patterson. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, James L. Newkirk, Sr. of Falmouth, Maine; children, Jim Newkirk (Kelley) and their children Jack and Faith. Susan (Bryan) Lewis, and their children Keegan and Cailey; cousins; nieces and nephews. Interment of her cremains were in Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, Iowa.
