MSG Joseph L. Topper, US Army Ret. , Master Sergeant, Joseph Laurence Topper, retired US Army, 81 of Shirley, MA and formally of Bowling Green, VA passed away Thursday, September 7th after a brief illness. He was born in Gettysburg, PA on April 15, 1942 son of the late Daniel Charles and Anastasia (Anne) Naomi (Adelsberger) Topper. He was raised in Emmitsburg, MD where he graduated from Saint Joseph's High School and made life long friends playing baseball, hunting and working on cars. It was also where he met and married the love of his life and wife of 60 years, Liz. He served 21 years in the US Army including one tour in Vietnam, two tours in Korea, several short tours in Turkey and was stationed in Japan, Germany, Maryland, Virginia and Massachusetts. While serving his country he spent many years in the Army Security Agency (ASA), Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), and Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) at the US Army Intelligence School Devens. After retiring from the Army he continued his career working for RCA, Digitial Equipment Corporation where he taught the VAX computer system and Lockheed Martin where he taught equipment on ships, submarines and the U-2 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. Upon his second retirement he and Liz spent years traveling throughout the US, including a wonderful family vacation to Alaska. He made numerous trips to Ocean City, MD and loved taking long walks at Assateague State Park where the wild ponies roamed. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, crabbing on the Chesapeake bay and the crab feast that followed. Joe adored his family and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered as a man of honor and integrity, a gentleman, who was always kind, caring and generous. He is survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth (Barbe) Topper, daughter Tamara (Tammy) Farley and husband Sean of Shirley, MA and son Daniel Topper and wife Beth of Shirley, MA. He leaves two siblings, Virginia Ridenour of Thurmont, MD and Danielle (Dani) Fink of Littlestown, PA and many nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his sister Rita (Topper) Keene, his niece Amy White, numerous brothers-in-law, and his beloved granddaughter, Erica Farley who brought him so much joy and happiness. Funeral service with full military honors and celebration of life will be held with close friends and family. Sister Josephine (Josephine Ann) Murphy, age 94, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on December 3, 2023. She was born on December 29, 1928 in Richmond, Virginia to Josephine Ann (Ross) and John Joseph Murphy. Before entering the Community, Sister Josephine was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Richmond. She graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1945 and entered the Daughters of Charity on April 7, 1946. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secretarial Science in 1965 from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg and her Master of Social Work in 1973 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Following initial formation, Sister Josephine was missioned as a Group Worker with children to the following missions: St. Mary's Villa in Baltimore, Maryland (1947-1960), St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Home for Children in Farmington Hills, Michigan (1960-1966), St. Joseph Gonzaga Home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1966-1967), Col. John J. Astor Home for Children in Rhinebeck, New York (1967-1969) and to St. Joseph's Villa in Richmond (1969-1975), becoming Administrator there for the next two years. Sister Josephine was next missioned to Emmitsburg to work as a Social Worker at Seton Center. After this, she served at Immaculate Conception Parish in Baltimore (1978-1979). From 1979 to 1988, Sister Josephine served the retired Sisters as Sister Servant of Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. For the next seventeen years, Sister Josephine was the Administrator of St. Ann's Infant Home in Hyattsville, Maryland. During those many years, Sister Josephine advocated for the protection of children by supporting adoption and lobbying before Congress to urge passage of the Adoption and Safe Families Act, which became law in 1997. In 2005, she was missioned to serve as Pastoral Associate at St. Cyprian Parish in Georgetown, South Carolina until 2014, when she was missioned to Villa St. Michael for the Ministry of Prayer, a ministry she held until her death. Sister Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Margaret Holloway and Catherine Lee and her aunt, Sister Magdalen Ross, Daughter of Charity. She is survived by devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and her Sisters in Community. She is also remembered fondly by many of the children, now adults that were under her care during her many years in child care. A Wake Service will be held on Friday, December 8 at 7:00 pm in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 9, also in the Villa Chapel. Burial will follow in the St Joseph Cemetery on the grounds. Sister Cynthia Fox, age 71, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on November 6, 2023. She was born July 26, 1952 at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, North Carolina to Delia Ann (Wain) Fox and David Lee Fox. Before entering the Community, Sister Cynthia was a member of St. Michael Church (Overlea) in Baltimore, Maryland. She graduated from Seton High School in 1970 and entered the Daughters of Charity on April 6, 1972. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 1977 from College of Notre Dame of Maryland in Baltimore and her Master of Science Degree in Computer Science in 1988 from the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. Following initial formation, Sister Cynthia was missioned as a teacher in the following elementary schools: St. Charles School in Pikesville, Maryland, St. Mary's School in Rome Georgia, Portsmouth Catholic Elementary School in Portsmouth, Virginia, St. Patrick School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and St. Joseph School in Martinsburg, West Virginia. In 1990, she was then missioned to Petersburg, Virginia at St. Vincent de Paul High School as a teacher and Assistant Administrator. Her next mission was teaching Computer Science at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland. Sister Cynthia then used her computer skills in Information Services at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Providence Hospital in Washington, D. C. , Mother Seton Academy, Caroline Center and Seton Keough High School all in Baltimore. Her next mission was to Emmitsburg where Sister Cynthia ministered in the office and as a computer assistant at Seton Center and later as a tutor at Mother Seton School. In 2014, she was missioned to Villa St. Michael for the Ministry of Prayer, a ministry she held until her death. Sister Cynthia was preceded in death by her father and her brother, Kenneth Fox. She is survived by her mother, Delia Ann Fox, sisters, Catherine Bacastow and Patricia Chaney, nieces, nephews and her Sisters in Community. A Wake Service will be held on Thursday, November 9 at 4:00 pm in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Friday, November 10 also in the Villa Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery on the grounds. Doris Cecelia Glass, a cherished mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on October 17, 2023, at Gettysburg Hospital. She was born on January 24, 1935, and her memory will forever be held dear in the hearts of those who loved her. Doris was the beloved mother of Brenda C. Myers and her husband Steven, and John A. Glass and his wife Tammy. She was a guiding light and a source of unwavering love and support for her children throughout their lives. She was a dear sister to Louise Shriner and the late John B. Wetzel, Rita Cool, Patricia Miller, Mary Cool, and Regina Dillman. Doris's siblings held a special place in her heart, and she shared a bond of love and memories with each of them. Doris was a loving grandmother to Christopher Wagerman, Courtney Abrecht, Ashley Glass, and Jonathon Glass. She found great joy in their presence and took immense pride in their accomplishments. She was also a cherished great-grandmother to Colby Wagerman, Lilian Wolf, Brody Wagerman, Jake Wagerman, and Calvin Abrecht. Doris delighted in their laughter and treasured every moment spent with them. Doris is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a special Niece Connie Ohler. The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Tom's Creek United Methodist Church, located at 16252 Toms Creek Church Road, Emmitsburg, MD 21727, starting at 10:00 AM. A funeral service to honor Doris's life will immediately follow at 11:00 AM at the church. Interment will take place at the Toms Creek Community Cemetery. Wanda Lucille Glass, age 74, of Emmitsburg, MD. Died Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at her daughter's home, surrounded by her family. Born October 3, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen (Filler) Rodgers. She was the wife of the late Gary "Tex" Glass for 51 years, who passed in May 2021. Wanda was a Librarian at Mt. St. Mary's University for over 25 years. She was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmitsburg all her life. She enjoyed cooking, painting, and shopping. She loved going to Texas Roadhouse with her beloved husband Gary. Wanda adored spending time with her family. Survived by her children, Monica Workman and husband Randy of Emmitsburg, MD, Gary Glass and fiancee Jennifer Cool of Blue Ridge Summit, PA, and Melissa Bowers and fiance Tony Hugueley of Frederick, MD; sister Jody Eyler of Thurmont, MD; niece Niki Eyler and great-niece Addison Eyler both of Thurmont, MD; grandchildren, Josh Workman and wife Rachel, Shelby Workman and Avery Bowers; great-grandchildren, Bryson, Riley, Mylo and Marleigh; she will also be remembered by her sisters and brothers in law and many other nieces, nephews, cousins. Sister Ann Adele Kelly, age 88, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on July 1, 2023. She was born on July 31, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland to Ida Virginia (Rice) and John Jackson Kelly, Sr. Before entering the Community, Sister Ann Adele was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Baltimore. She graduated from Seton High School in 1952 and entered the Daughters of Charity on July 14, 1953. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 1964 from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg and her Master of Music Degree in Music Education in 1977 from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C. Following initial formation, Sister Ann Adele was missioned to St. Charles School in Pikesville, Maryland (1954-1965). She then ministered in Liturgy and Formation at St. Joseph Provincial House in Emmitsburg from 1965-1971. After this, she served as Elementary Teacher at Our Lady Queen of Peace School in Washington, D. C. (1971-1976) and St. Pius X School in Greensboro, North Carolina (1976-1990). In her last three years at St. Pius X School, she taught Religion, Music and served in the library, ministries that she continued at St. Patrick School in Richmond, Virginia (1990-1996). Her next assignment was as Liturgist and Music Director at St. Joseph Provincial House (1996-2008). Music was truly her love and her gift that brought joy to others. In 2008, Sister Ann Adele was missioned to Villa St. Michael for the Ministry of Prayer. During this time, she also was the spiritual moderator for the local chapter of the Ladies of Charity and continued to serve as organist and librarian as she was able. She held the Ministry of Prayer until her death. Sister Ann Adele was preceded in death by her parents, brother John Kelly, and sister Mary Kelly. She is survived by her brother Robert J. Kelly, nieces and nephews and her Sisters in Community. A Wake Service will be held on Wednesday, July 5 at 7:00 pm in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 6 in the Villa Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery on the grounds.
