Mona Ruth McGowin Dunnam, 88, passed away October 1, 2023, in Glen Rose, Texas with family by her side. She was born on October 27, 1934, to Toy C. and Tommie W. McGowin, in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma. Ruth, as she was known to family and friends, graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1952, where she met and married her husband of 32 years, the late Bill Dunnam. They lived in Okmulgee for a few years before relocating to Odessa, Texas, where they resided for more than 30 years. Ruth eventually settled in Haltom City, Texas, where she lived for more than 20 years with her granddaughter, Krystal. Ruth was a proud member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was awarded the prestigious Order of the Rose degree. She was a Captain in the Texas Civil Air Patrol, an organization in which she and Bill were very active members. She and Bill co-owned and operated Odessa West, Inc. , a successful trucking company they created from the ground up. She finished her career at Conoco Phillips where she worked for more than 20 years before her retirement. Of all her successes, she considered her children and grandchildren to be her greatest accomplishment. Ruth is survived by her two grandchildren, Christopher Alan Dunnam, of Katy and Krystal Dawn Dunnam Neils, of Fort Johnson. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Jane Ann Dunnam, of Katy, sister Marilyn McGowin Kuban and husband Jimmy, of Walnut Springs and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her loving husband Billy Horace Dunnam, son Ronald Dean Dunnam, son Alan Dale Dunnam, daughter Rynda Kay Dunnam, daughter-in-law Terry Lee Dunnam and brother Ted Stanley McGowin. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas, on Friday, October 6th at 2pm.

Richard Smith of Glen Rose, Texas went to be with his Lord and Savior November 4, 2023. Born September 24, 1940 in New York City, NY. He spent his teenage days in Point Marion, PA; graduating from high school in 1958. Because of his father’s service to his country, Richard had a desire to serve also. He was inducted into the NAVY January 22, 1959 where he spent the next 20 years. He then returned to school to further his education and became a computer programmer contractor for several well-known companies. His first assignment with the Navy in 1959 was Corpus Christi where he met the love of his life, Mary Jane Martin and married shortly thereafter. The joy of Richard’s life was his devotion to his family. His wife, Mary, passed November 7, 2008, after 48. 5 years of marriage. They will be buried together forever today. Richard is survived by his wife, Suzanne Strackbein of 13 years, sons Steve Smith (Shawn), James Smith and daughter Jennifer Floyd (Steve). Grandchildren Jacob Smith, Emma Smith, Ryan Park (Kerianne) and great grandson, Asher Park. Sister Rosemary Mahon and step brother, Clifford Brice. Richard was preceded in death by Mary Jane Smith, his Mom Phyllis Smith and Father, Stephen Joseph While Mary was on hospice care, Richard became acquainted with Paston Tim Denton who comforted Richard during Mary’s illness. Richard later became a member of the Vanderveer Church of Christ in Burnet, TX after he and Suzanne married. Richard loved to cruise and spent many years during and after retirement on the seas enjoying the sights he missed while flying with the NAVY as an aviation electronics crew member. Richard started cruising in 1989 with Mary and his final cruise ended September 3, 2023 with Suzanne. He will be remembered as making many new friendships in all the trips they took seeing the world. Services will be held at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen on December 4, 2023 at 10:45a under the direction of Minister Tim Denton of the Vanderveer Church of Christ in Burnet.Show more

Frank Don Moates, 93, of Glen Rose, Texas, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023. He was born on August 24, 1930, to Ava Hobbs and Charlie Moates in Colorado City, Texas. Frank was devoted to his family as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Haveman, son, David, daughter-in-law, Marla, and daughter, Judi Stallings. He will also be deeply missed by grandchildren, Avery, Marissa, Adam and Erin Stallings, Jeffrey and Kelsie Stallings, great-granddaughters, Emma and Peyton Stallings, and many nieces and nephews. Frank attended Beaumont High School. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Austin in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in physical education. He went on to obtain a Master's degree in School Administration from the University of North Texas and continued there working on his doctorate. Frank loved sports and played league baseball and basketball as a young man. He began his coaching career while still in high school by starting a youth flag football team at a Beaumont elementary school. A die-hard Longhorn fan, you seldom saw him without a UT ball cap. Frank's love of sports was equal to his passion for education. His first position was in 1953 as a coach at Academy High School in Academy, Texas followed by Stark High School in Orange, Texas. He went on to coach at Burleson High School, later becoming a counselor and then Assistant Superintendent. In 1971, he became the Superintendent of Schools in Malakoff, Texas. In 1974, he moved to De Soto where he was Superintendent of Schools for De Soto ISD until 1990. He worked for the Texas Education Agency and Texas School Board Association, finishing his career as interim Superintendent in Glen Rose. Whether in the classroom, on the court, in the board room or the hallways, Frank always led with kindness and positivity. He believed in hiring the best people and letting them do their job. In video created for Frank's retirement celebration, an elementary student was interviewed who said, "I'll miss Mr. Moates. He's my friend. " In 1988, Frank D. Moates Elementary School opened with 31 classes to serve 500 students in the Glen Heights section of De Soto ISD. Frank's greatest loves were his family and his faith. He met his wife, Cynthia, while teaching at Stark High School. Married for 68 years, theirs was a match made in heaven. He was devoted to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, loving nothing more than having the house full of love and laughter. Frank was also a man of great faith, eager to share with everyone he met. He often carried scripture cards in his truck and pocket, leaving them on the table at a restaurant, a chair at the infusion center or handing them to a cashier at the grocery store. Frank and Cynthia participated in numerous mission trip, sharing their faith with those in Russia, Africa, Poland, Ecuador, and Brazil. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Glen Rose, where he worshipped and served as a deacon. A visitation will be held at Wiley Funeral Home in Glen Rose on Tuesday, November 14, from 6:00-8:00pm. The interment at Squaw Creek Cemetery in Glen Rose will be for family only on Wednesday, November 15, at 9:30am. A Memorial Service will follow at 10:30AM. at the First Baptist Church of Glen Rose. Melba Hope Grizzle, 82, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023, at her home in Glen Rose, Texas surrounded by family. She was born April 8, 1941, in Sherman, Texas to Henry Clifton Lewis and Alma Gladys Hope. Melba grew up in the Channelview area until she moved to Plano in 1956. In 1957, she met the love of her life, Edwin, and they had their first date on February 16th at the First Baptist Church, Renner Texas Sweetheart banquet. She graduated from Plano High School in 1959 and married her high school sweetheart on July 17th at First Baptist Church, Renner, Texas. In 1963, they had their daughter, Sheryl, followed by their son, Stephen, in 1966. They eventually made the Richardson/Plano area their home and their family started to grow. They became grandparents in 1987 and now have several great grandchildren. In 2006, they moved to Glen Rose to live out their retirement years. From the age of 9 until she moved to Glen Rose, Melba was the pianist or organist for various churches. She had a love of music, especially hymns and anything by Elvis. Many a Sunday afternoon was filled with groups from church around the piano singing gospel songs. She had a soft spot for her furry friends, treating each and every one like the family member they were. If you spent any time with her at all, you heard stories about her current pet. Melba was loved by many and many were loved by her. She will be remembered for her stubbornness, her devotion to her husband, and her love for her family. She will forever be our Memaw. Melba is preceded in death by her parents. Melba is survived by her husband, Edwin Grizzle, daughter, Sheryl Millwee and husband Ed; son, Stephen Grizzle and wife Gina; Granddaughters, Kari Yeager and husband, Gregger, Kimberlee McCoy and husband, Cody, and Ashlee DeGrasse; Grandsons Chase Grizzle and wife Haley, Trent Grizzle and Zane Grizzle; Step grandchildren Josh, Aubry and Marti Millwee. Great grandchildren Titan and Ezra Yeager, Parker McCoy and Elli Lochabay. Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters in law. Elizabeth Ann Canady Parham, "Mamaw", passed away October 24, 2023 at home in Glen Rose with her loving family by her side. Elizabeth was born June 16,1930 in Odessa, Texas to Olah James Canady and Annie Sue Lockhart Canandy. She married the love of her life, Elvis Parham on February 8, 1950 in Stephenville, Texas and then they moved to Glen Rose, Texas. If anyone knew our Mamaw, you knew she was "Mamaw" to everyone! After many years of working for Glen Lake Methodist Camp, she retired to enjoy her family and friends. She was a member of Cottonwood Baptist Church before changing her membership to Grace Baptist Church in Glen Rose, Texas. Elizabeth is preceded in death by her loving husband, Elvis Parham, son, Elvis Parham, Jr. , granddaughter, Tara Elms, her parents, 1 brother and 3 sisters.
