"Molly Mo" Molly Erin McBride was born February 13, 1997. With a beautiful spirit and a heart filled with grace, she brought joy to all who knew her. On October 5, 2023, she left us way too soon at the age of 26. Molly had a deep love for music, art, and whales. Her singing filled the air with her own symphony of joy. She loved painting and filled hundreds of canvases with her expressive brush strokes. Painting and singing allowed her to express herself and show the world the beauty inside her. Molly loved jokes, teasing people, and taking selfies. Her enthusiasm for life and her creative, loving spirit made a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was vibrant and full of a joy that you couldn’t deny. Molly's presence will be missed by so many. Molly’s memory will be forever cherished by her father, Rod McBride; her mother and stepfather, Stacie and Donald Gorham; her sister Emily McBride; and grandparents Calvin and Sharon McBride, Mary McBride, and Marie Dinsmore. She leaves behind many, many friends and loved ones. Welcoming her to heaven will be her Grandpa Elmer Dinsmore. A memorial service to celebrate Molly’s life will be held on October 13, 2023 at Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Ks. The visitation will start at 6:00 pm followed by the service at 7:00 pm. In memory of Molly, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. May her soul rest in peace, and may her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew her.

Joann Elizabeth Carlson lived to be 100 years old and six months and was feisty until the end. She liked her Cokes and her chocolate and would not put up with any "nonsense. " Born in Indiana on May 11, 1923, to Ada and Kenneth C. Plasterer, Joann spent her early years in Michigan, as her father worked for General Motors. He was sent to Kansas City to become general manager of the GM plant. Joann started college at Michigan State, but her father, knowing the war was coming (since he was manufacturing tanks instead of cars), thought she needed a degree that she could actually use. She finished her education at Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston and returned to Kansas City to work as a secretary at the top of the Power and Light Building. Joann met Jack Carlson through a mutual friend. Jack had served as a Navy pilot doing reconnaissance work from South America and then returned to Kansas City to work for his family business: Standard Linen Company. Joann and Jack were married in January 1947. Joann’s "handsome" brother, Kenneth C. "Kenny" Plasterer predeceased her. Joann leaves her three children: Kristie Wolferman (Fred), Mitchell Robert Carlson, Marianne Goff (Steve); six grandchildren: Stuart Wolferman (Zoe Knight), Ethan Wolferman (Venessa Robinson), Ashleigh Usher Hamblin (Nate), Amanda Garcia Patino, Logan Goff, and Addison Goff Seibert (Hunter); and ten great grandchildren. King David

King David, 59, Overland Park, KS, passed away on November 22, 2023 due to a combination of serious underlying medical issues, surrounded by family and friends. Despite the pain and his own stubbornness, King fought hard until the end because "why wouldn’t ya?". King, fondly known as KR, was born on November 17, 1964 in Amarillo, TX to Kingsford and Beverly David. He graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School in 1983. KR married the love of his life, Lyn, on August 21,1993. The story of their famous date at Johnny Cascone’s Italian Restaurant, where KR had to briefly escape the restaurant while on a "bathroom break" to go withdrawal money from the bank in order to pay the bill after Lyn recanted her original offer to pay, was still commonly told. Together, they had two children: Jordan and Jessica. For the past 39 years, he enjoyed working at Capitol Federal Savings Bank. KR was a devoted father, always the man with the camcorder recording each and every family event and holiday. KR was an avid "sports dad", spending many years as the head coach for the Margarita’s Mustangs; cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Kansas Jayhawks, and Arkansas Razorbacks. KR spent many Sunday mornings golfing with his buddies; "I’ll tell ya right now", it took a lot of balls to golf like he did……"that’s funny right there", as he would ordinarily say (loudly). KR was the man of many iconic phrases. "Rick Flair……WOOOOOOOO". KR is survived by his two children, Jordan David and his fiancée, Kenna; and Jessica Habiger and her husband, Austin. KR was preceded in death by his wife, Lyn David; mother, Beverly David; and father, Kingsford David. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P. Jeannie Mcdermott

Age - 78

Jeannie McDermott was a painter and outdoorswoman with a love of canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, camping, bird-watching and picnics. She was zealous about reading and children's literature and spent most of her professional life as a children's librarian. She loved to travel, frequently on long, looping car trips, with a box of books in the back seat. Those trips often ended on the north shore of Lake Superior or in far-eastern coastal Maine. For the last 25 years, Jeannie spent part of every summer in a cottage in the easternmost county of Maine, painting, paddling, looking out over the bay, enjoying the quirky community, and slowly restoring the cottage from a wreck that should have been bulldozed into a cheerful and comfortable home. Even in her last year, as her chemotherapy lost effectiveness, she made the trip to that cottage. Jeannie painted in watercolors, often working out of the Buena Vista studio with a very special group of like-minded friends. Jeannie would also drive out into the countryside -- in Kansas, Maine, New Mexico or anywhere else -- hunting for good locations from which to paint. These trips occasionally aroused the suspicions of the local residents and led to visits from deputy sheriffs, one of whom explained his suspicion by citing a rash of cattle thefts. Jeannie was driving her Toyota Corolla at the time, leading us to wonder how a 100-pound woman might be expected to steal a steer and hide it in a Corolla. Jeannie was an avid reader. She read contemporary fiction -- and some just-for-fun mysteries -- and continued to take an interest in children's literature after she retired. Christmas was an opportunity to carefully choose books for the children of distant family members, and to read aloud, with Dave, from at least one of her favorite children's Christmas stories. Jeannie loved to cook. On vacations, she traveled with a cutting board in the back seat of the car because rental cottages so often had inadequate kitchen equipment. She wrote about cooking for the Christian Science Monitor. Her shrimp artichoke and cilantro pizza won the National Public Radio best pizza contest. Jeannie died on November 26, 2023, at the age of 78. Memorial services will be 10:00am, Saturday, December 2 at Prairie Baptist Church, 7416 Roe Avenue, Prairie Village, Kansas. She is survived by her husband, Dave; her sisters, Chris and Dottie; her nieces, Heather, Kim and Deanna; and grand-nieces and nephews, Logan, Kylea, Gracie, Zach and Ana.Show more

Charles Douglas

Age - 99

Charles Robert (Bob) Douglas, was born January 16, 1924, to Arthur and Anna Laura Douglas, in Maywood, Illinois. He passed away on November 21, 2023 in Overland Park, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Arthur and George, his wife, Kitty, his step-daughter, Kathy Rogers, and her husband, Bob Rogers. Bob grew up in Maywood, Illinois, and attended Beloit College. His studies were interrupted by WWII and his enlistment into the military. He served as a cryptographer with the Air Force in North Africa, Corsica, and Italy, and was on his way to the Pacific when the war ended. He was highly decorated for his service. He returned home and completed his studies at Beloit College, graduating in 1949 with honors. He then worked professionally in the insurance industry in Chicago, Illinois, until he and his wife, Kitty, retired to the Kansas City area in over thirty years ago. Bob’s continuing interests throughout the years included membership in the St. Andrew’s Society, and a longtime membership in the Civil War Roundtable. He was a long-suffering Chicago Cubs fan. He often recounted that, when he was on leave, his father managed to get tickets to a final game of the World Series. Unfortunately, the Cubs lost to the Detroit Tigers, but he was thrilled him to attend the game with his father and brother. Later in life, he reflected on his WWII service and wrote the story of his military service, along with numerous research articles about the war. He often spoke at functions and schools regarding his experience, and participated in a number of veteran reunion events. Bob is survived by his four children, Laura, (Rob), Rick, Steve, and Joanne, and 10 grandchildren, Matthew, Heather, Stafford, Easton, Emma, Scotlyn, Emiston, Rigby, Paizley, and Campbell, step grandchildren, and his good friends Bill and Debbie Vest. Bob died in his 100th year. We were fortunate to have him for as many years as we did. And he did get to see the Cubs win a World Series. Services will be held at Asbury Methodist Church at 10:00 am on Thursday, November 30, 2023, with interment at Resurrection Cemetery, following the service. Wagih M. I. Moussa passed away on November 22, 2023 at the age of 79. Wagih was born in Cairo, Egypt and immigrated to Kansas in 1976, where he and his wife Marcelle raised their family. He worked as a senior architect for Black and Veatch for 37 years. He was known for his dedication to his family, the church, and his love of architecture. Wagih is survived by his wife (Marcelle), daughters (Sherin and Mariam), granddaughters (Alexandra and Hannah), and sons-in-law (Brian and Ryan). Jeffrey Volkerding

"Jeffrey Vernon Volkerding of Parker, CO, formerly of Overland Park, KS and Cape Girardeau, MO, left his earthly life suddenly and unexpectedly on October 27, 2023 due to an unattended medical emergency. He was the first son born to Victor Vernon and Ferne Elizabeth (Howard) Volkerding on January 22, 1960. Jeff attended Trinity Lutheran Day School from kindergarten through eighth grade and was Salutatorian of his eighth grade class. In 1978, he graduated from Central High School in Cape Girardeau, MO. During his high school years,his talents as a singer and musician were honed by his participation in numerous choir concerts and theater productions culminating in his portrayal of Jud Fry in the Red Dagger offering of the musical \u0026quot;Oklahoma\u0026quot; during his senior year. After high school, Jeff worked as a realtor until 1985 when he made the move to the hospitality industry. He worked in Missouri and Kansas as General Manager and Director of Operations of several motels. He served on the Missouri Hotel and Motel Association Board of Directors from 1988-2000 and was elected President and President-elect in 1998 and 2000, respectively. He was appointed to the Perry County Tourism Commission in July 1988 and served two terms as its President. While in Perryville, Jeff was an engaged community member. He founded and was Chairman of \u0026quot;Perryville\u0027s Fabulous 4th\u0026quot; Independence Day celebrations in 1997 and 1998. He was elected to serve a three-year term on the Perry County School District 32 School Board. He also served on the Lodging and Tourism Committee of the Merriam, KS Chamber of Commerce. Jeff stayed connected to music throughout his life. In his younger years he was a member of several bands (Melody Lane Express and Ivory Tower, for example). He also sang at weddings, funerals and other events. And, he worked as and enjoyed being a DJ for events such as wedding receptions and corporate parties. Jeff gave of himself by volunteering numerous hours to produce, direct, and perform musical entertainment for local schools, churches, nursing homes, and sheltered workshops. He also volunteered for the National Stroke Association manning the phone helping others navigate the after-effects of having a stroke. Survivors include one son, Christopher Volkerding of the Kansas City, MO/KS area; two sisters, Victoria Roundtree of Parker, CO and Jennifer Volkerding-Trinka of Whitewater, MO; one brother, Gregory Volkerding, whose whereabouts are currently unknown. Also one uncle, Jerry Howard of Dexter, MO and several nieces and great-nieces, nephews and a great-nephew with another on the way, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Louis and Oma (O\u0027neal) Volkerding and John and Sylvia (Brecheisen) Howard, and many other family members. A private family service was held in Parker, CO at Parker Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held in Cape Girardeau, MO at Ford \u0026amp; Sons Funeral Home - Mount Auburn Chapel on December 2, 2023 with visitation from 12 p. m. -2 p. m. She was born in Lawrence, KS on Ocotber 9th, 1954, and lived in Maryland and Utah before moving back to Kansas for good in 1965. Sarah graduated from Shawnee Mission East in 1974. She worked a number of jobs, but none that she loved as much as working with small children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Rosemary Matthies, brothers Greg and John Matthies, and brother-in-law Kirk Haner. She leaves behind her sister Mariann Haner, brother Robert Matthies (Patty), 2 sisters-in-law Cathy Boutte and Diana Matthies, several nieces and nephews, and many friends. She will be buried in Fort Leavenworth with her parents.Show more

Paul Nelson

Age - 71

Paul William Nelson, MD, FACS (8/29/1952 -11/22/2023 ) died this week following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. A well-respected transplant surgeon, Dr. Nelson devoted his life to medicine. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he attended medical school at the University of Kansas, where he first felt called to surgery. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, then a fellowship in organ transplantation with Mass General Hospital/Harvard University. After learning from some of the pioneers of transplantation, Dr. Nelson returned to his hometown of Kansas City, spending the next few decades at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City. He held many positions at the hospital and served as president of the Midwest Transplant Network. He also trained many successful surgical residents through the University of Missouri-Kansas City and other institutions. In his later years, Dr. Nelson launched new surgical residency programs in Indianapolis, Las Vegas, and Miami. Dr. Nelson was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Nelson, his father, Radford Nelson and his brother, Mark Nelson. Dr. Nelson is survived by his children Andrew, Erin, Jennifer, Kenny, Amy, and Sarah, as well as grandchildren August, Lewis, Mila, Emma, Lucas, and Radford. They invite those who grieve him to commemorate through a charitable donation to the Midwest Transplant Network or by registering to be an organ and tissue donor.Show more
