Jan Carter

Jan Carter

Age - 84

December 8, 2023

Three weeks shy of his 60th wedding anniversary, Jan Delmont Carter passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 7, 2023. Jan was born on February 22, 1939, in Great Falls, Montana to Helen and Del Carter. He attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Paris Gibson Junior High, and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1957. Jan played football and basketball and was an All-Stater in both sports. As a senior, he played on the winning football State Championship team and runner-up State basketball team. However, his most talked about memory was of dropping the winning touchdown pass in the East-West Shriner's Football game. He attended Michigan State University for one year and transferred to the University of Montana where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and graduated with a Business Administration degree in 1961. He met Lisette Bennett who was also a student at the University and they were married on December 28, 1963. They settled in Great Falls where they raised their two children, Ben and Lisette. In 1961, Jan and his father bought Smith Equipment Company which through the years became MDS Construction Supply. "The Shop" was his happy place where he loved working and never retired. Jan was an active volunteer having served as Founding Director of Mountain West Bank, President of the Great Falls Children's Receiving Home, Chair of the Deaconess Hospital Board and Foundation during the merger with the Columbus Hospital, President of the Montana State Golf Association, Member of the University of Montana Foundation Board, President of the University of Great Falls Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Restoration Committee of St. Ann's Cathedral, Vice-Chair of St. Ann's Pastoral Council, and President of Meadowlark Country Club Board of Directors. Jan was also inducted into the Montana State Golf Association Hall of Fame. Jan loved playing with his weekday golf group and while he described himself as a lousy player, he had 6 holes in one and shot his age at 79. An avid sportsperson, Jan picked up a 7-10 split in his weekly bowling league the night his daughter was born. Soon thereafter, he saw a UFO while spending time with friends at the Roseth cabin in Monarch. Jan always had a project and one of his largest was restoring his wife's childhood home and property in St. Regis, Montana where he taught his grandchildren to ski, play golf, drive, and burn an annual towering slash pile which garnered the attention of the local fire department. Jan was a very nurturing and caring person, bringing his widowed mother to work and lunch every day for many years. Jan jokingly said they went through a lot of White-Out. In the past few years, Jan enjoyed Taco Tuesday and attending Mass at the University of Providence with his ladies. Jan was always a hard worker, yet he hated shoveling snow, doing yard work, and putting up Christmas Decorations, often taking the tree down before noon on Christmas Day. Jan was a man of deep faith, and the Catholic Church was his foundation. He had an uplifting sense of humor which he never lost. One of his favorite expressions that he said often was, "If you are going to New York, don't get off at Chicago. " Jan is survived by his wife , Lisette (Bennett); son, Bennett (Caroline); daughter, Lisette (Tim Durkin); grandchildren, Matthew, Carter and Lisette Durkin; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Del Carter; and his sister, Corinne Knight.Show more

Robert N Nommensen was born August 11,1931 in Kalispell, MT to parents Emil and Lucy (Scott) Nommensen. He was the sixth of seven children. His Mother passed away when he was 4. Growing up during the Depression meant that Dad started working at an early age, selling papers on the street corner before school at age 5, and later selling papers in bars and on a paper route. His other childhood jobs included setting pins at the bowling alley, picking Flathead cherries, delivering Pepsi and learning carpentry with his Dad. But there was plenty of time for playing at Woodland Park with his siblings and cousins, always stopping on the way home for sandwiches, milk and cookies at Aunt Alma Kraft's house. Aunt Alma and Grandma Caroline did their best to be substitute Moms for the Nommensen siblings. At age 17 he joined the Air Force, having one of the highest entry exam scores at the time. He spent most of his military enlistment in Libya and San Antonio. Always up for an adventure, Dad would take hops through Europe and was able to explore Italy, Denmark, Germany, among others. While he was stationed in San Antonio he purchased a stock car. Enlisted Airmen were not allowed to race cars, so Dad crossed the border and raced under the alias of Rocky. He passed his love of racing onto the next generations. Following his discharge from the service in 1952, he returned to Montana choosing Great Falls as home. He worked for the railroad at the roundhouse, and then the Anaconda Company where he made many lifelong friends. While working for ACM, he also sold Prudential Life Insurance. Then he was the Northern Territory Manager for Hoover Vacuum Company, and worked at his wife's family farm, and in 1975, he started his legacy, Nommensen Insurance Agency, which he owned for 30 years. In 1953, while he was working under a vehicle he heard a female voice ask "Did the kicker go through the ash pan?" Norma Hicks became his wife December 30,1954. While living in their basement house, 3 children were added to the family. In 1960, Mom and Dad bought a house kit and Dad put his carpentry skills to work building the family home on top of the basement house. Two more children soon followed. Their children were raised with Christian values, strong work ethic, love and lots of fun. Our yard was known for a large garden, and lots of activity. Outdoor play was encouraged, including Dad building skating rinks in the backyard so we could have fun learning to skate. We have many great memories of Glacier Park, visiting relatives in Kalispell and Missoula, camping weekends at Shonkin and time spent at the cabin in Monarch. Bob passed away in his home surrounded by his families love on November 25 th . He was a baptized and confirmed member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kalispell and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Falls for 72 years. December 5, 2023

Eric "Ric" Andrew Hamilton, 72, left this world to be reunited with the love of his life on November 5, 2023. His services will be held at 1 pm Saturday, December 9 at O'Connor Memorial Chapel, with private interment to follow. Ric was born on March 8, 1951, to Robert and Dorothy Hamilton in Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio. He graduated high school and joined the U. S. Coast Guard. After leaving the Coast Guard, Ric held a variety of jobs, from which he entertained his friends and family with stories for his whole life. He worked as a ranch hand in Kaycee, WY, with Chris LeDoux's brother; as a professor at University of Montana Western in Dillon; as a principal at Heart Butte High School; and as a civilian leader for the Air Force. He retired as Deputy Director of the Force Support Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base. Upon retirement, he planned to spend many years enjoying every day with the love of his life, Tracey Palombi. The two of them were a remarkable couple, and they truly lived life to the fullest when together. They loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and cooking together. Unfortunately, Tracey was taken too soon, which left Ric with a broken heart that would never quite heal. Ric was a kind and generous man, and if you were part of his small circle of friends and family, you knew it completely. If you weren't, well, you knew that too. He was passionate about many things, and when he decided to take on a new endeavor, whether it was a friendship, a hobby, or a responsibility, he did so with his whole heart and spirit. He was a genuinely entertaining storyteller and his closest friends never even complained when he told the same stories multiple times. He could always be counted on for a joke when you talked to him, too. Ric is survived by his brother, Jon Hamilton and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his true love, Tracey Palombi; his parents; and a sister, Ellen.Show more
