Judith Hill

Judith Hill

Age - 90

November 30, 2023

Judith A. Hill of Greensboro NC passed away on November 18, 2023. She was born to Archie and Wilma "Billie" Pitt on July 8 1933. Judi moved to Greensboro in 1972 and opened a consignment store for women to buy and sell upscale previously owned clothing. Judi believed a good outfit could bring out a woman's confidence and display her inner beauty and creativity. She believed all women should have the ability to dress for success. Later, she opened a grandfather clock store and finally an art and picture shop called "Thousands O'Prints" which continues to thrive in downtown Greensboro. With a heart for the arts and spirit for civic duty, Judi was a member of the Olde Greensborough Preservation Society. Among other acts of service, she was physically involved in the restoration of the Carolina Theater after a disastrous fire in July, 1981. Writing as Miss Pidgie, Judi penned a society column for many years for the , a newspaper that chronicled the rebirth and growth of the Downtown Greensboro community. Active in Greensboro's business and art scenes, Judi's glowing smile can also be found within the pages of the post celebrating and supporting her town and community. For all her myriad of activities and accomplishments too numerous to be listed, Judi is best known as the Director of the Wildacres Writing Workshop which still meets in Little Switzerland NC. She was the workshop director for 40 years. Judi created a haven and support system for writers from all across the country and beyond. She did what Judi has always done best-created a place where other people could shine. From Lew Holton on behalf of the hundreds of writers whose lives were changed by this remarkable woman: Judi Hill created an almost magical time and place upon a mountaintop in North Carolina within which hundreds of otherwise ordinary folks could retreat, and that for a brief while there, they could be the writer that they imagined themselves to be, regardless of whether they ever had so much as a single poem or story published, much less enjoyed any critical accolades or royalty check rewards. Judi Hill put together an enchanted, almost Brigadoon-esque, experience that turned ordinary folks with a true appreciation of the written word into real writers. . . and turned real writers into better writers than they ever even knew they were capable of being. She created a community of writers that individually and collectively have made the world a better place. Judi, you will be loved and appreciated and missed beyond your ability to know. Although Judi worked tirelessly to support and encourage those around her in business and the arts, her love for family outshone everything else. Talking always about her precious grandchildren, her son whom she adored, and her beloved husband who was devoted to her and she to him, anyone could see how deeply her love for her family shaped who she was and all she did. Judi was preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by her husband of 44 years David F. Hill, son Kelly (Lorrie) Sham, stepson Steve (Maria Elena) Hill, stepdaughter Tracy (Joe) Cittidano, five grandchildren, David, Kevin,Westley, Nikki, and Madison, and two great grandchildren, Jackson and Locke. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Friends of Guilford County Animal Shelter in Jamestown, NC. For more information visit friendsofguilfordcountyanimalshelter. com. A service will be held Saturday, December 2nd at 4 p. m. at The Gathering Space at the West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC. All are welcome.Show more
