Weddington, NC

"Michael Ray Wheeling of Weddington, NC went home to be with his Lord on Monday, October 2, 2023. "Mike" was born on July 29, 1961 in Winston-Salem, NC to his loving parents, Ray and Carolyn Wheeling. Mike was 62 years young. Mike was an adventurer who lived life fully with passion, kindness, humor, and compassion. He loved deeply, worked hard, played hard, and had a deep faith in Christ that determined many paths in his life. Mike married Nina Glander in August of 1984 and they were together for 40 years. Together, they raised two children, Curt Michael and Gina Maria, absolute gifts from God. Mike was incredibly thankful for and proud of his two children. He loved time with his family more than anything on this earth. Mike loved being outside in God's creation and enjoyed many outdoor hobbies such as water skiing, wake-boarding, boating, jet-skiing, kayaking, snow-skiing, gardening, and riding his motorcycle. He was the "cool dad" on the lake who still liked to cut the wake and impress on the water. Mike was a great and loyal friend. Boy, he loved his friends. His friends from junior high, high school, the lake, church, and college were still precious to him and he was always planning adventures with his buddies. Mike's career was spent in landscaping. He affected so many people in this field all over Charlotte with his kindness, humor, generosity, and attention to detail. He worked so hard to provide for his family and was adored by so many that he worked with. His work family was very dear to him. Mike's faith in Christ was something that grew deeply over the years; he loved the Lord and he loved his church family. He was an active member of Weddington Methodist Church for almost 30 years and his life group of brothers were true "brothers" to him. He so believed in the many missions of our church and had a generous heart that he rarely spoke of - he just gave and he just did, without speaking of it to others. Mike is survived by his wife, Nina; son, Curt Michael and wife, Ashley; daughter, Gina Maria and husband Darryl Kalil; grandson, Darryl Leo Kalil; sister, Melinda Price and husband, Tommy Price; brother in law, Donald Glander and wife, Elizabeth Glander; father-in-law, Don Glander and wife, Nydia Glander; niece, Lindsay Kay and husband, Eric Rendleman; and nephew, Adam Price and wife, Ashley Price. His family was so very dear to him; there were laughs beyond measure at family gatherings. The family is so grateful for the 62 years they had with Mike on this earth. It doesn't feel like it was enough time, but they know he is resting now in the loving arms of Jesus. A celebration of life and faith will be held at Weddington Methodist Church this Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 4:00 pm. Visitation will take place immediately following in Helms Hall. ********************************************************* In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to Weddington Methodist Church (13901 Providence Road, Weddington, NC 28104), marked "Mike Wheeling Memorial. " These donations will support local missions in Union County, as well as the orphanage we support in Kenya and aid being provided to the church in Romania to children coming out of Ukraine. "

Edmond Phillips

Edmond Phillips

Age - 84

October 23, 2023

"Edmond John ("Buzzy") Phillips, 84, passed away on October 17, 2023. Buzzy was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 1, 1938. Buzzy enjoyed reminding people that he was born on All Saints Day--which was either entirely appropriate or the height of irony, depending on your perspective. Buzzy moved to Norfolk, VA, at the age of four and attended Norfolk Catholic High School, where he met his future wife, Ann Battaglia. Buzzy spent a year at the University of Notre Dame on a ROTC scholarship before marrying Ann in 1960. He spent several years as a Washington Redskins (Commanders) beat reporter for the Virginian Pilot and went on to be an Insurance Agent for the Knights of Columbus. It was with that job that he moved the family to Kansas City in 1972, a place that certainly became "home" to the entire family. In 1988, Buzzy started his own insurance marketing organization and all three kids worked for him in the business at different times. Buzzy and Ann relocated to Pine Island, FL, in 2004. Ann passed away in 2007, and in 2008, Buzzy was blessed to meet his second life partner, Carol Cassell. Upon his retirement at age 82, Buzzy and Carol settled in the Charlotte, NC, area. Buzzy loved being on the water. He also loved sports--especially Notre Dame football and the Kansas City Chiefs. Buzzy coached intramural football for four years and won the same number of league championships. Despite his success on the field, Buzzy's true legacy was in the character of the kids who played for him. Buzzy was renowned for his contagious and boisterous laugh, his sense of humor, and his ability to connect with all kinds of humans and bring people together. It was rare for Buzzy to meet someone who did not become his friend. After his passing, a waiter at one of Buzzy's favorite restaurants wrote that "he will always be a light in our hearts because he always made us smile. " Buzzy was a proud and active member of the Kiwanis Club in the multiple communities where he lived. He was also on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce in Pine Island, FL. Buzzy was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Battaglia Phillips; parents, Edmond John DeFilippo and Marie Dungan; and his sister, Barbara Thorns. Buzzy is survived by his partner of 16 years, Carol Cassell; son Steve Phillips (Laurie), daughters Chris Walsh and Patti Phillips; grandchildren Shaeley Walsh (who Buzzy raised as his third daughter), Leigha Phillips, and Lindsay Mincks; Carol's extended family (who Buzzy cherished getting to know in his final years); several cousins, nieces, and nephews; and countless friends who he considered family. A funeral service will be held at Weddington Methodist Church, in Weddington, NC, on October 20, 2023 at 3:00 p. m. In addition, Buzzy's family will host a Celebration of Life at Arrowhead Yacht Club in Greenwood, Missouri, on November 25, 2023, at 5:00 P. M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or online at https://www. stjude. org/donate/donate-to-st-jude. html. Christopher Weiss

Christopher Weiss

Age - 74

July 19, 2023

"Christopher Robin Weiss died at his home in Weddington on July 14, 2023. Although he lived 74 years, he never really grew older, remaining mischievous, funny, and "the boss. " He lived his life wide open and wholeheartedly. He loved fishing, gambling, gardening, Westerns, and cooking for family and friends. He was a great dancer and loved music. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was his favorite. Chris was a New Year's Day baby, born January 1, 1949, to Margaret and George Weiss in Burlington, N. C. He made the news as Alamance County's first baby of the year, and was the first child in North Carolina to be assigned a birth number under the new national numbering system. He went into the Navy straight out of high school, and served in Vietnam. He returned and received his degree in mechanical engineering at B-C-D Tech (now Trident Technical College) in Charleston, S. C. In 1980, he and five partners founded Environamics, where he served as President/CEO for the next 39 years. He retired to Weddington, enjoying life on the Hudson family compound. A perfect day for him was a morning of gardening, lunch, and a nap--followed by an afternoon of Westerns on the big TV with his cat Jacksie on his lap and his favorite "Jack on the rocks. " While he may have had a gruff exterior, that didn't fool anyone lucky enough to know him. He was known for his generosity, kindness, and ability to fix almost anything. He donated his body to Experience Anatomy Foundation for research. Chris is survived by his wife, Jamie Hudson Weiss; his sister, Martha; his brother, Randy (Robin); his ex-wife Laura Weiss; as well as his extended family. The saying "friends are the family you choose" fit Chris perfectly, and he is also survived by a huge family of friends. As his niece Elizabeth wrote, "those who live life most authentically leave the largest holes when they leave - but, like the ocean, his favorite place, the love he gave will continue to ripple toward the horizon, endless and powerful. " As Chris requested, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Union County (700 W. Roosevelt Blvd. , Monroe, NC 28110) or Misty Meadows Mitey Riders, (455 Providence Rd S, Waxhaw, NC 28173). Happy Trails, Chris!"Show more
