Shannon (McDaniel) Maza, 52, of Chicago Illinois, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2024 after a six-year battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). A native of Toledo, Ohio, Shannon moved to Chicago, Illinois to attend DePaul University where she met the love of her life Eric. After graduation, Shannon stayed in Chicago with Eric and went on to teach high school chemistry, conduct research at the renowned Fermilab in Chicago, work for the Chicago Park District, and was employed as an independent salesperson in various industries, most recently cabi. Her most rewarding job, however, was being a wife and mother. Shannon and Eric welcomed their children, Jacob and Julia, in 2005 and 2008, respectively, and their dream of being parents was fulfilled. Shannon was a vocal and determined advocate for her children and volunteered at their schools and in numerous organizations making sure they and all children had the resources they needed. Shannon loved her family and friends fiercely. She loved to cook, bake, clean, be a beer-snob, host parties, decorate for the seasons, run, talk loudly, and cheer for her children. ALS took all of that away over time, but she made the best of a horrible situation and shared her struggles on social media with hundreds of people being both vulnerable and incredibly strong. Shannon was preceded in death by her grandparents, Virgil and Agnes McDaniel and Ed and Florence Henrich, her father David McDaniel, and father-in-law Jerry Maza. She leaves behind her devoted husband Eric, her son Jacob, daughter Julia, mother Mary Jo McDaniel, mother-in-law Jeanne Maza, sister Kristen Van Wert (David), sister-in-law Lori Frieri (Jeff), brothers-in-law Greg Maza (Sandy) and Chris Maza, ten nieces and nephews, and her loving aunts and uncles. Upon her death, Shannon elected to participate in the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Blazeman Foundation for ALS and the UMB Brain and Tissue Bank research initiative. Family & friends will gather, Saturday, March 9 for a memorial visitation 10:00 AM until time of mass 11:00 AM at St. Pascal Church (Irving Park & Melvina) 3935 N. Melvina Ave. Chicago, IL 60634 In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to the in Shannon’s name. This foundation provided numerous resources for Shannon and all those who suffer from this devastating disease. Arrangements entrusted to Gibbons Family Funeral Home. Tristan Anthony Ochoa

Jul 03, 1996 - Feb 20, 2024

location-icon

Chicago, IL

Tristan Anthony Ochoa, a beacon of intelligence and an avid reader, was born on July 3rd, 1996 in Chicago, IL. He departed from this world on February 20, 2024 at the tender age of 27. Tristan is survived by his loving parents Anthony and Sherry Ochoa, his twin sister Alexis Ochoa, maternal grandmother Irene Vollmer, as well as uncles, aunts and many cousins. He is preceded by his paternal grandparents Alejandro Ochoa Sr. and Julia Ochoa, his uncles Alfredo Ochoa, Adrian Ochoa and Travis Vollmer. From the moment he entered this world until his last breath, Tristan demonstrated a rare capacity not merely to exist but to observe, absorb and understand the complexities of the human condition. His love for reading allowed him to dive into conversations that ranged from the simple pleasures of novel recipes to the complexities of existential philosophy. He had a way of bringing new perspectives to light; often leaving others pondering his words long after their conversation had ended. Pride could be seen in Tristan's eyes when he spoke about his work at The Duck Inn. Cooking was not just a job for him; it was a passion - a form of expression. His dedication to learning from his peers was testament to his belief in continual growth and love for culinary arts. "The kitchen is a dojo," he would say with conviction – embodying the belief that cooking could take him anywhere because "everyone’s gotta eat every day." Apart from crafting flavors in the kitchen, Tristan had an insatiable appetite for discovery - especially when it came to music. His hobby of going to concerts and sharing music wasn't just pastime; it was a way of connecting with others - sharing pieces of himself through melodies and lyrics with playlists that held deep meaning for him. His legacy is not one defined by tangible achievements or accolades but rather by the indelible mark he left on our hearts. Tristan demonstrated what it means to live life in pursuit of passion, connectedness and genuine engagement with those around us. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude towards all who have shown support during this difficult time. Visitation for Tristan will be on Wednesday February 28, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm. at Michael Coletta Sons Funeral Home, located at 544 W. 31st St, Chicago, IL 60616.
