Michael Md Obituary

Michael Andrew Sopchak, MD, age 73, of York, died peacefully at the WellSpan York Hospital, on Monday, October 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Syracuse, NY on June 14, 1950, he was the son of Mary Ann (Shaver) Sopchak of Baldwinsville, NY, and the late Michael Sopchak. Michael was the husband of Marcia Maria Lins Lima, they were married in March of 2023. Michael graduated from Cornell University and SUNY Upstate Medical University. He completed his internship at Albany Medical Center in New York and went on to complete his residency in anesthesiology at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA. Michael became an anesthesiologist at the Upstate Medical Center in New York, moved to York, and took a job with Anesthesia Associates of York, where he worked for many years. He concluded his medical career at the Hanover Hospital with Hanover Anesthesiology and Pain Management. Following his retirement, he worked at Leg Up Farms. Michael was a member of the American Medical Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of York since 1985. His faith in the Lord led him, since 1996, to take a yearly medical mission trips to India, and, along with Dr. Robert Davis, supported the founding of the Carmel Matriculation School in India 30 years ago. The school provides a quality education and spiritual guidance to many underprivileged children. He was a longtime friend of Bill W. Michael loved to travel all over the world. He was a great lover of music, both classical and contemporary. He played the French horn, which he played at many church celebrations. In addition to his mother and wife, Michael is survived by his daughters Karen R. Sopchak (Jonathan Rodkey) of Red Lion and Rebecca A. Coatney (Tyler) of New Orleans, LA, his grandchildren Charley Coatney, Elliot Coatney, Jonathan Sopchak, Isaiah Sopchak, and Sterling Archer Rodkey, his siblings John Sopchak (Carol) of Cicero, NY, Thomas Sopchak (Gael) of Jamesville, NY, Daniel Sopchak (Sandy) of Syracuse, NY, William Sopchak of Jacksonville, FL, Carl Sopchak (Michelle) of Albany, NY, Mary Clancey (Linda Montgomery) of Syracuse, NY, and Dawn Wood (Greg) of Cicero, NY, his former wife Ann R. Sopchak of 42 years of York, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister Barbara Sopchak. A celebration of Michael's life will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church of York, 225 East Market Street, York, with Rev. C. Kyle Gott officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Michael's memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church of York, 225 East Market Street, York, PA to aid the Carmel Matriculation School in India.
