Michael J. Hope, 63, of New Bedford, MA, passed away unexpectedly on September 24, 2023 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was the loving husband of Kathleen (Stafford) Hope with whom he shared 18 years of marriage. Born in New Bedford and a lifelong resident, he was the son of Dorothy A. (Deneault) Hope and the late Norman C. Hope who passed away on September 2, 2023. He was a graduate of New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. Michael had worked for Sunbeam Bakery for 25 years until its closing, then worked for the New Bedford School Department for 15 years until his retirement. He most recently worked for the Rock and Waring-Sullivan Funeral Homes as a Funeral Assistant. He was also a volunteer docent at the Whaling Museum years ago. He enjoyed photography, riding his electric bike daily around his south end neighborhood and daily walks with his beloved dog Bentley. Surviving in addition to his mother and wife are his step-children, Stephanie Castellone and her husband Adam Valenzuela, Anthony Castellone and Marissa Castellone all of Las Vegas; an aunt, Irene Deneault; and many cousins. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 9:00-10:30am in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd. , New Bedford followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00am in St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, 343 Tarkiln Hill Rd. , New Bedford. (Britto) Baptista, 79, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by her loving family following a period of declining health. She was the wife of Paul Baptista with whom she shared 50 years of marriage and daughter of the late Manoel and Mary (Duarte)Britto. Born in New Bedford, Joyce was a lifelong resident of the city and was a parishioner of St. Lawrence, Martyr Church. She was employed as a housekeeper for Claremont Company, Inc. and previously at U. S. Ringbinder. Joyce was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She and her husband, Paul made rosaries for the church and also to be sent around the world. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Paula Baptista of New Bedford; 7 sons, Mark Britto and his wife, Trenna of New Bedford, John Britto of New Bedford; James Baptista and his wife, Nancy of Lakeland, FL, Manuel Baptista and his wife, Karen of Bismarck, ND, Marlon Baptista and his wife, Teisha of New Bedford and Paul Baptista, Jr. of New Bedford and Peter Baptista of New Bedford; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Joyce was predeceased by her siblings, Francisco Britto, John M. Britto, Manoel Britto, Nathalia Oglesby and Patricia Britto. Phillip Belliveau, 76, of E. Freetown, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of Cheryl M. (Carrier) Belliveau. Born in Acushnet, the son of the late Joseph and Irene (Ferreira) Belliveau. Survivors include his wife, his son, Nathaniel Phillip of E. Freetown and his daughter, Aimee Lara and her fiancee Mark Deschamps of Fairhaven, his grandson, Preston Phillip, his siblings, Paul and wife Arlene, Peter, Patricia "Patty" Young (his baby sister). Need to mention his "other sister" Avis (Tante) is gonna miss you calling her out from the porch. Predeceased by his siblings, Diane Rego and husband Manuel, Andrew and John. He was a proud Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War and communicant of St. John Neumann Church. Phil was married to his childhood sweetheart, Cheryl, for 53 years. He served aboard the USS Uvalde AKA 88. Phil created a web page so his shipmates would be able to keep in touch. Upon completion with the Navy, he returned home to his place of employment at Sippican/Lockheed Martin starting out as a solderer and working his way up to Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, he stayed with them for 45 years. Phil was a hard worker and would do anything for his family. He will be missed by all who knew him and of his dry sense of humor. Phil was so close to his beloved grandson, Preston Phillip. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews. In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated. A Funeral Mass will be scheduled at St. John Neumann Church in the near future for relatives and friends to attend. Burial will be private and calling hours are respectively omitted. NEW BEDFORD-Edwina (Silva) Costa, 97, of New Bedford, formerly of So. Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 20, 2023 at The Oaks. She was the widow of Mario M. Costa and daughter of the late Francisco D. and Maria J. (Ferreira) Silva. Born in New Bedford, Mrs. Costa resided in So. Dartmouth for 18 years where she was a parishioner of St. Mary Church. She was employed as a medical secretary for Dr. Victor E. Almeida until her retirement. Mrs. Costa was a talented oil painter and gave many of her paintings as gifts to family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting and was an avid animal lover with a particular fondness for Siamese cats. She is survived by her son, Scott W. Costa and his wife, Trudy of So. Dartmouth; her granddaughter, Samantha A. Costa Thompson and her husband, Brendan Thompson; 2 great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Scott Thompson and Calin Jeffrey Thompson and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Costa was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Celestina "Sally" Vaz and her husband, Adrian, Polivio "Cy" Silva and his wife, Margaret and Hector Silva and his wife, Hilda. NEW BEDFORD-John J. Sylvia, 94, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital following a period of declining health. He was the devoted husband of the late Virginia (Boteho) Sylvia and son of the late John J. and Mary Madeline (Sylvia) Sylvia. Born in New Bedford, Mr. Sylvia was a lifelong resident and was a former parishioner of St. James Church. Mr. Sylvia was a proud U. S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He attained the rank of Airman, First Class and was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He also served in the Army National Guard. Mr. Sylvia was employed in the Shipping Department at Goodyear Tire and Rubber until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling with his wife. Mr. Sylvia loved his cadillacs and was the proud owner of a new model every 4 years. His family includes his daughter, Barbara Sylvia of New Bedford; 2 sons, Michael Sylvia and his wife, Scheryl of New Bedford and Robert Sylvia and his wife, Shirley of Carson, Washington; a grandson, Michael John Sylvia and his wife, Kari Bonville of New Bedford; 3 great-grandchildren, Leah Sylvia, Autumn Sylvia and Jocelyn Dupuis; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
