Dale H. Kessler, 90, of Grand Rapids, died on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 in Home and Comfort in Coleraine. Born on January 10, 1934 in Evergreen Township, MN he was the son of August and Mary (Mattfield) Kessler. He was united in marriage to Ardes Tessman on June 17, 1953, and they then made their home in the Grand Rapids area after Dale got a job in the mines. He worked as a mechanic in various mines throughout the range, retiring from National Steel in Keewatin with over 40 years in the mining industry. He was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Bovey where he was a Elder and on different church boards. He loved working on cars and lawn mowers, he was the family mechanic. He also enjoyed cutting wood, plowing gardens with his farmall tractor, and tinkering in the garage. Survivors include his wife Ardes, his children; Susan (Bart) Murphy Wulff, Carla Aimonetti, David (Denise) Kessler and daughter-in-law, Sue Kessler. 9 Grandchildren; Angie (Bryce) Beckel, Aaron (Lenae) Aimonetti, Rhea (Aaron) Mikulich, Andrew Murphy, Katie (Andy) Sertich, Ryan (Laura) Murphy, Dan (Leah) Kessler, Leo Kessler and Emily (Tyler) Peterson and 12 Great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Dan Kessler, and a son-in-law; John Murphy, and siblings; Archie Kessler, Emil Kessler, Esther Mueller, George Kessler, Dorothy Erickson and Alice Anderson. Born April 16, 1956, in St. Paul, MN, he was the son of Robert and Carolyn (Hawkes) Kastner. Rex was a 1974 graduate of Grand Rapids High School, attended Itasca Community College, and graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 1988. Rex and Melanie Orhn were married on September 19, 1998, at the Joyce Estate in rural Bovey. His parents, Robert and Carolyn Kastner preceded him in death. Donald P. Roberts, 63, Coleraine, died Friday, November 17, 2023, in his home. Born February 8, 1960 in Grand Rapids, he was the son of Donald D. and Jeanne (Anderson) Roberts. Don attended Greenway schools and with the exception of 15 years in Salt Lake City, UT, he lived most of his life in Itasca County. He had been a construction laborer and a member of the Laborers Union #1097. Don and Bobby Rudnick were married on July 4, 2022, in Itasca County. Donnie loved spending as much time as possible at the Little Winnie Resort. Survivors include his wife, Bobby; children, Neal (Sarah) Roberts, Donald J. Geraldine "Jerry" M. Sutherland, 98, formerly of rural Bovey, died Sunday, October 29, 2023, in Home and Comfort in Coleraine. Born November 19, 1924, in Hoven, SD, she was the daughter of Joseph and Philomena (Gross) Minnerath. Jerry was a resident of South Dakota until moving to Minnesota in 1956. Jerry and Mearl Sutherland were married on February 3, 1943, in Hoven, SD. She had been a Seamstress for many years and worked at Walmart for over 20 years until retiring at the age of 88. Jerry was a member of the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church of Coleraine and it's C. C. W. Her parents, Joseph and Philomena Minnerath; her husband, Mearl; a grandson, Chad Parks; one brother, and four sisters preceded her in death. Survivors include her children, Chuck (Barbara) Sutherland, Ronald (Betty) Sutherland, Peggy (Lester) Parks, Daniel (Gail) Sutherland, Larry (Lisa) Sutherland, Betty (Aron Smestad) Moran, Teri (Mike) Dubovich, and Joe Sutherland; 49 grandchildren; and 122 great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Kenneth "Ken" Duane Smith, 72, passed away peacefully in his home on October 6, 2023, following a courageous and unwavering seven-year battle with cancer Ken was born November 4, 1950, to Eugene and Ethel (Harris) Smith in Grand Rapids, MN A lifelong resident of Coleraine, "Smitty" attended Greenway schools and was proud to be a member of the illustrious Greenway High School Class of 1969 After graduating from Hibbing Technical School in 1971, he worked at Blandin Paper Company for 25 years, where he also served as a UPMW steward and as a member of the Wood Fibers Council Ken married his best friend and the love of his life Trika Guyer in 1981 He was an amazing father who raised his children to value integrity, kindness, and compassion, just as he exemplified these traits in his own life To his children he passed on his love of music, sports, current events, and community involvement As a proud grandpa, Ken would dance and sing Frankie Valli songs with his grandchildren like no one was watching His greatest joy in life was his family Ken was a public servant for over 50 years He was a member of the Coleraine Fire Department for 24 years and continued to enjoy fundraising for the department after his retirement, earning the honor of "Most Active Retiree" several times First elected at the age of 21, Ken served on the Coleraine City Council for 26 years, including ten years as mayor During his tenure, a dream became reality as the City initiated the construction of the Eagle Ridge Golf Course He also served on the RAMS board and co-chaired both the Coleraine Diamond Jubilee and Coleraine Centennial Committees Most recently, he was an active member of the Coleraine City Planning and Zoning Commission In all these positions, he always sought what was best for his beloved City of Coleraine When delivering Meals on Wheels, a half-hour commitment would often take Ken three hours, as he would sometimes return to visit, shovel snow, or help a resident lace his "new-fangled" boots He also enjoyed sharing his pontoon with children at Vandyke Elementary School on Trout Lake Day Although the fish usually remained elusive, the gummy worms and goldfish crackers were plentiful Though he loved to be home, Ken also enjoyed road trips and traveling with Trika Together they were able to visit 21 of 30 Major League Baseball stadiums He was a founder of the Penguins, a group of friends who went to restaurants, concerts, and theater performances together During deer season he enjoyed time with friends and family at Butch's Hunting Lodge Unfortunately, the stories are unclear because "what happens at deer camp stays at deer camp " Ken was known for his "impeccable timing" and late arrivals, which became affectionately known as "Smith Time" He embodied a deep love of friends, neighbors, and community Ken was a people person with a unique ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, using his quick wit to make them laugh He will long be remembered for his generosity, selflessness, and humility Ken is now reunited with his parents; mother-in-law, Elma (Jokinen) Guyer; father-in-law, Dale "Doc" Guyer; a sister-in-law, Jean (Niemi) Smith; brothers-in-law, Jim "Peanut" and Joe "Smuzzy" Guyer; and a niece, Jennie Guyer Ken's legacy will continue through Trika, his wife of 42 years; daughter, Kendra (Dustin) Arthur; son, Corey (Amber) Smith; grandchildren, Aurelia, Warren, Abram, and Kendrick Arthur, Ethan Metzer, Carson, Kensley, and Andrik Smith; honorary granddaughter, Alisha Johnson; brother, Rich Smith; sister, Deb (Bill) Munter; sisters-in-law, Holly Guyer and Cricket Guyer; and several cherished nieces and nephews The Smith family would like to thank the staff at Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital and Pharmacy, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minnesota Oncology, and St Croix Hospice We feel very blessed to have had such wonderful care throughout Ken's journey A Celebration of Life will be held at the Trout Lake Community Center on Saturday, October 21 It will begin at 11:00 am with a prayer service and will be followed by a visitation and luncheon from 12:00 to 2:00 pm In honor of Ken's love of Minnesota sports, friends and family in attendance are encouraged to wear Twins, Vikings, Greenway, or any Minnesota team attire Private interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery at a later date To to the family, please

Reinhard W. "Sonny" Wohlsdorf, Jr 82 of Coleraine, MN died on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, in the Emeralds in Grand Rapids, MN. Born on December 23, 1940, in Toad Lake Township, Becker County, MN, he was the son of Reinhard and Mary (Taylor) Wohlsdorf Sr. He married Mary Lou Pickett in 1968. He worked for U. S. Steel for 33 years, served in the U. S. Army and was stationed in Germany. Sonny loved to camp, fish, hunt and do gardening. He loved to be outside. He was a mechanic working on cars. He was a "Jack of all trades", helping anyone with repair work. He was very sociable, always chatting with somebody. He enjoyed preparing firewood, cut the tree down, block it, haul it and burn it. He loved to hang out with the family and would enjoy a cold beer. Loved to travel around wherever the road would take him. Survivors include his wife; May Lou Wohlsdorf, his children; Randy L. Wohlsdorf, Vanessa R. (Mark) Mattson, Misty L. Wohlsdorf, Stella B. Wohlsdorf and Sarah A. (Dan) Lofgren. His grandchildren; Ethan Mattson, James Foster, Elliot, Addison, Oliver, David, Destiny and Gabe Lofgren. His brothers; Earl Wohlsdorf, Kenneth Wohlsdorf, Paul Wohlsdorf and many nieces and nephews. Born November 17, 1931, in Perham, MN, she was the daughter of Edward and Martha (Schultz) Mattfeld. Ruth attended Greenway schools and lived most of her life in Bovey. Ruth and George Dotlich were married on August 21, 1948, in Bovey. She had been a waitress for the Palm Garden and the Hillside Cafe in Bovey. Ruth was a member of the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Bovey and was "Grandma Ruth" to many of the children of Bovey. Her parents, Edward and Martha Mattfeld; her husband, George; and eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death. Survivors include her children, Ramona Smeltzer, Sharon (Doug) Gilbertson, and Dan Dotlich; grandchildren, Lisa (Rick), Tonia (Aaron), Nicole (Jesse), and Matt; great grandchildren, Alex, Brandi (Tyler), and Madison; siblings, Jeanette Vail and Kenneth Mattfeld; and many nieces and nephews. He graduated from Central High School in Sheboygan attended Madison Technical College, had been a teacher for the Indianhead Technical College, had owned and operated the Time Out Restaurant in Washburn, WI, and had been a member of the Elks Club in Ashland, WI.
