Diamantina Contreras, age 94 of Defiance, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. She was born on August 7, 1929 to the late Apolinar and Zeniada (Pena) Santos in Brownsville, Texas. On April 17, 1946 she married Ignacio Contreras, who preceded her in death on March 29, 1996. Diamantina was a faithful member of St John Catholic Church and was a member of Virgen de Guadalupe at St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed volunteering at the Food Pantry years ago. Her devotion to her family was an inspiration. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, word search puzzles, and making everyone laugh. Diamantina was a loving mother and a wonderful cook, providing the best traditional Mexican meals for her family and anyone who entered the threshold of her home. She was devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Diamantina is survived by her children, Maria (Stanley) Hilton and Emma (William) Davis, all of Worcester, Massachusetts. Jesus Contreras (Sharon Long) of Toledo, OH, and Gloria Turner of Defiance. Left to cherish her memory are 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Ignacio Contreras Sr., her sons, Ignacio Contreras, Jr., and Roberto Contreras and her daughter, Sylvia Cooke. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, March 1, 2024 at St. John Catholic Church, with Fr. Jason D'Souza officiating. Donald R. Gahris, age 74 of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Wednesday morning, February 21, 2024 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on September 19, 1949 to Robert and Lois (Scheuerman) Gahris in Defiance, Ohio. Don was a 1967 graduate of Defiance High School, and earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Toledo, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He worked as a Chemical Engineer for Medusa Cement, and later The Washington Group until his retirement in 2015. Don enjoyed bicycling and he loved his beloved dog "Pepper". He always considered Defiance his home, no matter how far he traveled. Don is survived by his sisters, Linda (Jonathan) Hay and Becky (Joseph) Geiger, all of Defiance, his nieces, Sarah (Ruben) Torres and Jennifer Hay, and nephews Matthew (Kristy) Geiger and James (Lisette) Hay. "Jane Rosemary Claussen, 85, of Defiance, Ohio passed away on February 18, 2024. She was born in Muscatine, Iowa on December 23, 1938, to the late Henry and Anna (Rueckert) Marten. On June 25, 1961, she married the Rev. Ronald Claussen at Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine, Iowa and they shared almost 50 years together. Jane was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Defiance. She taught for many years at Tinora High School. Jane was a master gardener who liked quilting and traveling. She was an avid walker, often over two miles a day. In her spare time, she loved having coffee with her friends and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Jane is survived by her children, Marten (Karen) Claussen, Kelley (Nick) Waisner, Patrik (Linda) Claussen, Nicolas (Stacy) Claussen; grandchildren, Samantha Claussen, Amanda Claussen, Adam (Ania) Claussen, Ben (Krista Malone) Claussen, Perri Waisner, and Sarah Waisner; sisters-in-law, Betty Marten and Connie Claussen; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; brother Tom Marten; and sister Florence Weiss. Friends and family will be received at the Rodenberger-Gray Funeral Home, Napoleon, on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Betty J. Lehman, 90 of Defiance, Ohio passed from this life into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the Laurel's of Defiance. Betty was born in Defiance on November 20, 1933 to the late Clarence A. "Lonnie" and Goldie M. (Mansfield) Floehr. A lifetime resident of Defiance, Betty was a 1951 graduate of Defiance High School where she was a member of the band and played clarinet. Betty was married to the late James "Jim" L. Lehman for 56 years, until his passing in 2013. Betty and Jim have three sons, the late James J. "Jimmy" (Pat) Lehman, Jerry (April) Lehman of Wisconsin and Jeff (Melanie) Lehman of Montpelier, Ohio. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Kyle (Kim) Lehman, Emily Lehman, Lydia Lehman, Mahalia (Andrew) Winters and Henry Lehman. Betty was predeceased by her husband, parents, eldest son, and her younger brother, A. John Floehr. Besides being a homemaker, Betty had been employed at the former G.C. Murphy department store, Wellman's Restaurant and Awards Plus all of Defiance. She was an Avon lady as well as a self-employed seamstress and baker of cakes for special occasions. Betty was known to have made both cakes and bride and bridesmaids dresses for numerous weddings. She was active in "Defiance Remembers" which was sponsored by the Defiance Co. Senior Center as well as the Defiance County Historical Society where she served several terms as the Chairman of the Board and Auglaize Village where she was known as "the worm lady", the butter lady and the herb lady, just to name a few. Betty took a great deal of pride in the accomplishments of her family. Betty was an avid reader and "fervent conversationalist". She never met a stranger and was willing and prepared to talk at length with anyone. There will be a graveside service on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 11:00 am at Riverside Cemetery with Pastor Maurice Dunn officiating. John Henry Andrist

John Henry Andrist, age 82 of Defiance, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024. He was born on November 9, 1941 to the late Henry and Norma (Viebauch) Andrist in Defiance. He was a 1959 graduate of Defiance High School. John proudly served our country in the U.S. Army in 1962. In 1993, he married Sandra (Scheirer) Andrist who survives. John worked as Millwright at General Motors in Defiance until his retirement in 1991. He belonged to many social clubs in Defiance and was a life member of the AmVets and Eagles. He was also a member of the Defiance Masonic Temple. In his free time he enjoyed many different activities, he was an avid golfer, scuba diver, motorcycle enthusiast, he also enjoyed playing Santa Clause around town every Christmas. John played minor league baseball for the Defiance Merchants but his true passion was for the martial arts. John achieved a 4th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do from the Pil-Sung Academy of Martial Arts where he also served as instructor. He loved to work with his hands, a painter, fabricator. He was a jack of all trades. John also liked to sing karaoke and spend time with family and friends. He and his wife Sandi loved their trips to Las Vegas to visit friends and try his luck at the casinos. John absolutely adored his grandchildren. He will be missed by many. John is survived by his wife Sandi, and his children, Kelly (Terry) Dockery of Continental, Shelly (Tim) Gares of Defiance, Shelby "Omar" Wilson of Seville, Jeff (Roni) Andrist of Archbold, Matt (Lisa) Andrist and Josh (Jennifer) Busch, all of Defiance. Pauline was born on February 16, 1934, in Fulton County, to the late Carl Franklin and Nina Adeline (Bell) Olmstead. Pauline was a graduate of Wauseon High School. On September 1, 1956, she married Harold "Wayne" Johnston, who preceded her in death in 2005. Pauline attended the Beulah Methodist Church in Winameg. Pauline liked flowers and dolls. She enjoyed crocheting also. Above all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren, and often babysat them when they were younger. Surviving Pauline is her daughter, Yvonne (Keith) Sommers of Pettisville; son, Lyle (Julie) Johnston of Wauseon; son, Linn (Kathy) Johnston of Wauseon; daughter, Carolyn Stutzman of Wauseon; and daughter, Diane Johnston-Schilling of Illinois. Charles E. Polter, 85, of Hicksville, Ohio, passed away Friday, February 16, 2024, at Brookview Healthcare Center, Defiance, Ohio. Charles was born May 7, 1938, in Hicksville, Ohio, son of the late Earl and Wilimina (Doctor) Polter. He was a 1956 graduate of Mark Center High School. Charles married Karen M. Coy on November 24, 1957, in Mark Center, and she preceded him in death on September 2, 2020. In addition to farming with his father-in-law, Roger Coy, he was a tool & die maker for most of his career, retiring after 40 years from Wilco Tool & Die. He also previously worked at the Ohio Art Company. Charles and Karen were faithful members of Mark Center United Methodist Church, and he also belonged to the Defiance County Sheriff’s Posse and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed farming, and when he had time, trap shooting, hunting, and gardening. Most of all, Charles cherished spending time with his family. Surviving is his son, Dennis (Donna) Polter of Sherwood, Ohio; three grandchildren, Stacy Polter of Napoleon, Ohio, Sarah (Mike) Frank of Pemberville, Ohio, and Emily (Ein) DeWitt of Hicksville; eight great-grandchildren, Braylon Polter, Emma Polter, Cameron Frank, Cooper Frank, Jameson Smith, Cadan DeWitt, Walker DeWitt, and Sadie DeWitt; and three siblings, Richard (Carma) Polter of Sherwood, Ohio, Earl DeWayne Polter of Ney, Ohio, and Deb (Dave) Leavell of North Carolina. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Karen; son, Steven Polter; nephew, Darrin Polter; and sister-in-law, Sharon Polter. Celia is lovingly survived by her son, Ed(Veronica) Ovalle Jr. and her daughters, Juanita(Rick) Eldridge, Sofia(Dan) Delgado, and Anita(Luis) Garcia.
