Charles Falanga

Age - 84

December 1, 2023

Surrounded by his loving family, Charles Falanga stepped peacefully into his heavenly home on a clear crisp late November day in 2023. Born to Charles & Ruth Falanga in New Orleans, Charlie was a man of faith, a steadfast friend and deeply dedicated to his family. An active and beloved member of Word of Faith Temple, Charles served as a Deacon and Head Usher for many years. His faith in Jesus and reliance upon God's Word guided Charlie's decisions and actions. Integrity, character and honesty formed the foundation of his life. After earning a Business Administration degree from Louisiana State University New Orleans, Charles entered the U. S. Army to complete Officer Candidate School and served with pride as a 1st Lieutenant-Infantry responsible for recruiting stations in the Omaha, Nebraska region. Charlie was an automobile enthusiast and enjoyed his career in the automotive sector including Porsche, BMW and especially his long term work with Mercedes-Benz. An exciting memory is his business trip to Porsche headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany and his opportunity to drive on the Hockenheim racing circuit. There, Charlie was told he had race driver potential but decided against that move for the security of his young family. A brilliant man of many talents, Charlie's interests included hot rod cars, fishing with his Daddy in their classic Thunderbird boat, and family roadtrip adventures to the Rocky and Smoky mountains. Many happy memories were made in Florida, especially at the Panama City and Pensacola Beaches. Charlie was an avid motorcyclist and loved Saturday rides with his friends, including his beloved Pastor Charles Green. Passionate about the culture and language of Italy, a special highlight of Charlie's later years was his role as a background actor in an Italian themed movie and the friends he made on the film set. Charles was married to Sheron for 60 years. He is remembered as a loving family man, a trustworthy friend and a faithful Christian. He believed in giving one-hundred percent effort to any task at hand. His kindness and diligence will continue as an example to guide the lives of those who knew and loved him. The family will be forever grateful to Foundations Hospice for their compassionate care. A Christian service in memory of Charles' life will take place Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA. 70001. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with the service at 11:00 AM. Interment next to his parents at his much-loved Old Jefferson of the New Orleans area. Ann Nick

Ann Nick

Age - 91

November 29, 2023

Our beloved "Granny," Ann Ryder Nick, died peacefully in her sleep on November 26, 2023. Ann was born on May 13, 1932 in Alexandria, Louisiana, the only child of Luther and Ruby Ryder. She graduated from Bolton High School and afterward, Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While at SLI, Ann met the love of her life, the late Christian Joseph Nick. They married in 1954 and began a 66-year adventure that produced four daughters and a wealth of treasured memories. Ann and Chris made their first home in New Iberia and lived there until they moved to Metairie in 1960, where they would remain for the rest of their lives. Ann commenced a teaching career in the Jefferson Parish school system that would last the next 24 years. She taught mathematics at Kenner and Metairie Junior Highs until 1967, when she accepted her last teaching position at the newly opened John Quincy Adams Middle School, where she would teach math for 17 years. Ann cherished her time at Adams and was a well-regarded teacher to two decades of students. After retiring from teaching, Ann began her second career as a grandmother, eventually setting up a nursery at her home, which at various times included five of her grandchildren. To say that she was a grandmother, while accurate, would understate the commitment, love and investment she made in her New Orleans and Pennsylvania grandkids. Ann loved and valued family above all else, and made every holiday, birthday, dance recital, swim meet, soccer game, school play, and Mardi Gras parade special simply because of her presence. As a teacher, she had high expectations for the grandchildren and the fact that all of them became college graduates is due in no small part to her interest and example. Ann is survived by her four daughters: Gail Wise (Jon), Allison Cook (Henry), Frances Rush (Harmon) and Nancy Askinas (Alan); nine grandchildren: Christopher Cook (Britta), Rebecca Cook-Shyovitz (Nathaniel), Jessica Wise Clark (Samuel), Stewart Rush (Jordan), Samuel Askinas, Andrew Wise, Benjamin Askinas, Ali Askinas, and Carly Askinas; and four great-grandchildren: Louisa Cook, Liev Shyovitz, Dahlia Shyovitz and James Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband, Christian Nick, and her grandson, Ethan Wise. The family would like to express its gratitude to Ann's caregiver and friend, Felicia Macon, who provided loving support during the last years of her life. A funeral service will be held at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 3412 Haring Road in Metairie at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 2, 2023. Friends are invited to visit from 11:00 a. m. to 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, where she worshiped, in thanksgiving for the years of weddings, baptisms, pre-school and fellowship celebrated there.
