"Melvin Ira Shumate 84, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 22,2023 at Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House surrounded by his loving family. The son of the late Ora and Ira Shumate, Mel was born in Algoma, W. Va. on June 26, 1938. He was educated in the W. Va. school system. He graduated from Concord University in Athens, W. Va. where he played for the University\u0027s basketball team. He was married to Jane Brown Shumate on September 2, 1960. They were happily married for over 60 years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He always placed the needs of his family first. He enjoyed organizing family Christmas gatherings and taking his daughters and grandchildren water skiing on the lake. He was good at sharing stories and anecdotes for life\u0027s tough situations with his daughters and grandchildren. After graduation he worked for Goodyear Tire \u0026amp; Rubber Company where he advanced to mid-management. He started his own successful tire company after leaving Goodyear in 1970. In 2003 he sold his company and retired. After retirement he and Jane traveled across the United States and abroad. Mel became an avid golfer after retirement and enjoyed playing with friends and family. Mel was an active and loyal member of the First United Methodist Church. He served on several committees and taught the Christian Forum Sunday School Class. He is preceded in death by his wife Jane Brown Shumate; brothers Elbert, Estel, Raymond, Coy, William and Robert Shumate; sisters Myrtle Quesenberry and Marie Alley Harris. He is survived by his three daughters Belinda Musso and husband Alan of Chapel Hill, NC; Lisa Vaughn and husband Russell of Dunedin, FL; Susan Brooks and husband Werner of Hendersonville, NC; eight grandchildren Marissa VanHeest (Taylor) of Apex, NC; Melanie Musso (Matt Turner) of Chapel Hill, NC; Jennifer Musso (John Allen) of Durham, NC; Joseph Musso of Washington, D. C. ; Erin Lynch (Dennis) of San Carlos, CA; Zachary Brooks of Hendersonville, NC; Air Force Second Lieutenant Nicholas Brooks of Warner Robbins, GA; Abigail Brooks of Hendersonville, NC; 3 great grandchildren Otto, Ethan and Lucas VanHeest A service celebrating his life will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 2pm with Rev. Dr. Mark Conforti officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. A private inurnment will be held prior to the church service at the First United Methodist Church Columbarium.
