Willa Grey Hammond

Willa Grey Hammond, age 109, a longtime resident of Maple Knoll Village in Springdale, died peacefully at her home on February 29, 2024. Grey was born in Moores Hill, Indiana in 1914 to Horace and Beulah Bruce. After graduating from Moores Hill High School in 1932, she received a teaching certificate from Hanover College and later a bachelor’s degree from Miami University. Her thirty-year career as a schoolteacher began in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Indiana; her later career was spent as an elementary school teacher in the Colerain and Finneytown public schools. At the time of her death, Grey was the oldest living member of the Ohio State Teachers Retirement System. Grey met her husband, Edmond Hammond, when both were working in a defense plant in Cincinnati during World War II. They married in 1944. Ed, who was also an educator, served as Principal of Colerain High School and then as the Superintendent of the Northwest School District. Their happy marriage lasted until Ed’s passing in 1997. Together with Ed, Grey enjoyed golf, birdwatching, summer vacations with family in Michigan, and travel. She was devoted to her church (Monfort Heights United Methodist) and to a wide circle of dear friends, former students, and family members young and old. In addition to her parents and her husband Ed, Grey was preceded in death by her beloved younger brother Malcolm Bruce, sister-in-law Lottie Jane Bruce, and cousin Catherine Thompson, along with many departed aunts, uncles, and cousins. Surviving her are her nephew, William Bruce (Connie) of Spring Lake, Michigan, cousins Peter Thompson (Rebecca Terry) of Louisville, Kentucky, David Thompson (Sharon) of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jonathan Thompson (Lou Ann) of Louisville, Kentucky, and their families, as well as her close friend Pam Smith. A memorial service for Grey will be held in the Maple Knoll Village Chapel on the Green, 11100 Springfield Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45246 on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. The memorial service will be preceded by a private family burial service at Mount Sinai Cemetery in Moores Hill, Indiana. Richard was a 1954 graduate of Roger Bacon High School. He served in the Army from November 1954 to November 1956 and was a member of the Greenhills American Legion Post 530, where he volunteered his time as their finance director for many years. A great father, provider, and rock of his family; Richard also enjoyed golf and working out. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds and Bengals fan, and loved driving all of his Ford and Mercury cars over many decades, and also really enjoyed having a BMW in his last few years. After retiring from Ford Motor Company after 35 years, Richard also volunteered his time with the Ford Retirees Association and also delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years.Richard passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at age 88. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024 at Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home, 11365 Springfield Pike,OH, 45246 from 9-11am. Dale M. Cummins 79, of Springdale, Ohio, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2024. He was born January 7, 1945, in Hamilton, to the late Earl M. And Edith L. (Wehrle) Cummins. In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Gustav Rolke Jr., and niece, Lynn Rolke. He is survived by his sister, Janice Polito; nephews, Jonathan (Heather) Rolke and Scott Polito; grandnieces, Nora and Macy Rolke; beloved feline adventurer's, Isis and Cuddles; and many more family and friends. Dale had an insatiable love for motorcycles that defined much of his free-spirited nature. When cruising down open roads, the thrill of the ride brought him immense joy. His eyes would light up as he shared tales of his adventures. Beyond his passion for the open road, Dale had an unyielding passion for his family's ancestry. Together with other family members, he spent countless hours researching and uncovering the rich tapestry of his roots. This shared exploration not only strengthened familial bonds but also provided a lasting legacy for generations to come. Dale dedicated a significant part of his life to Honeywell, where he worked diligently until his well-deserved retirement. His fondness for the company was evident, and the relationships he built there were a source of pride. A true patriot, Dale served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. His commitment to duty showcased his selfless nature and love for his country. The values instilled in him during his military service continued to shape his character throughout his life. Above all, Dale was known for his selflessness, care, and an incredibly big heart. He approached life with a genuine concern for others, always ready to offer support or a comforting word. His kindness touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. A graveside service will be held Thursday, February 8 at 2PM at Preble Memory Gardens Cemetery, Green Burial Section, 3377 US Route 35 East, West Alexandria 45381. SLYE, Lori Ann (nee Heimkreiter). Beloved wife of the late Barry W. Slye. Devoted mother of Lonnie (Mandy) Slye, Casey Slye, Sherry Slye, Niki Slye, and Zach (Britta Roth) Slye. Loving Mimi of Chase Barry Slye. Dear sister of "Skip" (Sandy) Heimkreiter, Lynn (Austin) Welch, and the late Steve (Kelly Rossi) Heimkreiter. Sister-in-law to Cindy (Bob) Thurner. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Lori grew up in College Hill, and married the love of her life, Barry. They went on to have five children that were the apple of her eye. She dedicated her entire life to her family and thoroughly enjoyed watching them grow up and play sports. She spent endless hours cheering them on at the ballfields. Later, she became an avid Reds and Bengals fan and hardly ever missed watching a game. Lori was also an outstanding cook. The door was always open and there was always plenty of food for family and friends. Lori passed away on Friday, January 19, 2024 at age 68, with her family by her side. She will be missed everyday, but her memory will live on forever.Visitation will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home, 5501 Montgomery Rd., Norwood, OH 45212 from 10 AM until time of memorial service at 12 Noon.
