Mavis Elaine Avery Taylor, 88, of Kinston, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2023 at Kitty Askins Hospice, Goldsboro, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Floyd Taylor, Jr. ; parents, Harold and Hazel Lanier Avery; sister, Marilyn Owens, and brothers, Billy Avery and Edward Avery. Mavis worked as an administrative assistant at Lenoir Memorial Hospital for over 40 years and was a member of Kinston First Free Will Baptist Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, Tar Heel basketball, trips to Vegas with her dear friends, and playing her piano during the holidays. She loved her family deeply and her grandchildren were the apple of her eye. She is survived by her sons, Robert Harold Taylor and wife, Sonja, of Richmond, VA and Thomas Michael Taylor of Chapel Hill, NC; grandchildren, Robert Colton Taylor, Logan Elizabeth Taylor, Brian Thomas Taylor, and Elaine Dorothea Taylor; several special nieces and nephews whom she loved, and many other close family members and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Spring Arbor, Harmony Hall, and Kitty Askins Hospice Center for their loving care of Mavis over the years. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Friday, Sept. 15, 2023 at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lenoir Hospital Foundation, 100 Airport Road, Kinston, NC 28501.

Major Rosalie Biddix Chastain (Retired) passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 in Kinston, North Carolina. She was born on September 20, 1933 in Woodfin, North Carolina to William Alonzo and Lillie Leora Rice Biddix. Soon after, they moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where she was raised and remained until the age of 20. Rosalie dedicated her life to The Salvation Army. When she was 8 years old, she joined Junior Soldiers, and at the age of 20, she left for The Salvation Army's School for Officers' Training in Atlanta, Georgia. While at the School for Officers' Training, she met Cadet Joseph Lee Chastain, also known as Jack. She was commissioned in 1954 in the Shepards Session. She and Jack married on September 12, 1955. She retired at the rank of Major in June of 1999 and relocated to Grifton, North Carolina, although she always called the North Carolina mountains home. Rosalie's longtime career with The Salvation Army included bookkeeping for the Corps; creation and running of the Angel Tree Program; League of Mercy, visiting and ministering to those in prison and delivering care packages; Home League; and ministering the gospel of Jesus Christ for decades. Rosalie continued working for The Salvation Army as a bookkeeper after retirement. She was fiercely committed to her family and loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren selflessly. Rosalie's gentle spirit enveloped those around her. She loved writing, and she produced beautiful poetry. She cooked the best macaroni-and-cheese, Sunday roast beef dinner, and spaghetti sauce. She enjoyed playing Trivial Pursuit and Chinese Checkers, watching television, vacationing with family, scrapbooking, and sharing anything she had with others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, in February of 2022; both of her parents; three sisters, Major Madeline Edwards, Virgina May Fletcher, and Carolyn Doris Gainey; and three brothers, Wilson Theodore Biddix, Edward Eugene Biddix, and John Bascomb Biddix. Rosalie is survived by two sons; David Michael Chastain and wife, Betty, of Grifton and Paul Keith Chastain and lifelong partner, Lois, of Fayetteville; one daughter, Amanda Chastain Graham and husband, Scott, of Tallahassee; three granddaughters, Jennifer, Meagan and Ashlie; Ashlie's mother, Jayna; Nine great grandchildren, Sydney and husband, Malaki, Parker, Troy, Caden, Journey, Eli, Trey, Olivia, and Sterling. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 10:30 AM at The Salvation Army, 2110 N. Queen St. , Kinston. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Ramona Ann Collins Jenkins LaPlante Ramona Ann Collins Jenkins LaPlante, 79, of Kinston, NC passed away peacefully on Friday, November 24, 2023, surrounded by her family at UNC Lenoir Hospital. Ramona was born October 3, 1944 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina. She was the first child of Gardner Bryant and Lela Mae Collins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gardner Bryant and Lela Mae Collins, her husband, Lynwood Earl Jenkins and her son, Lynwood Bryant Jenkins. Ramona was a native of Albertson and Deep Run, North Carolina and eventually settled in Kinston, North Carolina where she married and started a family. She graduated from Deep Run School in Deep Run, North Carolina and attended James Sprunt College of Nursing and completed the nursing program there. She worked in the nursing field for several years before eventually accepting a position with the State of North Carolina at Caswell Developmental Center. Ramona was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served diligently in her callings. She had a great love for the gospel and a strong testimony. One of her most precious memories was being sealed to her husband and children at the Washington DC Temple on May 10, 1980. Ramona was extraordinarily talented and ambitious woman. However, her overriding desire has always been to serve our Heavenly Father and His children. She was a servant at heart. She ministered to so many. She freely shared the gospel and helped the weak and disabled. She encouraged the discouraged and assisted those in need. She comforted those who were down and loved those who were lonely. She was also very passionate about her genealogy work. She would talk about it 24/7 if you would let her. She never knew a stranger and people seemed to be drawn to her. She had a gift for helping others trace and find their roots and she would go to any limit to find the information she needed. Ramona blessed others with her talents in the garden, too, she loved flowers and just being outside surrounded by God's glorious creations. She could grow anything she touched and regularly shared cuttings and rooted plants with others. Ramona was blessed with a large and loving family. She was a beloved Mother, Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt and Friend. In her later years, as a widow, Ramona met and fell in love with Claude LaPlante, they married and recently celebrated their second anniversary. They shared a love of the gospel and family and blessed the lives of those around them with their faith and testimony. She is survived by her husband, Claude LaPlante of the home, her children, Valeria Jenkins Malcom and husband Gregory of Grovetown, GA. , Allison Jenkins Croom and husband, Randy of Deep Run, NC, Michael Shane Jenkins of Kinston, NC, sister Sharron Coston and husband Charles (& nephew, Andrew) of Deep Run, NC, nine grandchildren, Joshua Ellis, Kiri Malcom Onufer, Joshua Malcom, Rebecca Croom Counts, Macey Croom, Reaghan Croom, Maddox Jenkins, Noah Jenkins, Zachary Jenkins and two great grandchildren, Liam Ellis and Allen Lattimore.
