Hawarden, IA: Maureen Kay Schiefen, 83, of Hawarden, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Hillcrest Health Care Center of Hawarden. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 10, at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Hawarden with Fr. Mauro Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery of Hawarden. Public viewing will be held at Porter Funeral Home of Hawarden on Monday, October 9, from 2:00-6:00 PM.

HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Sandra Ann Gradert, 80, of Hawarden, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at her home under the care of hospice. Sandy was blessed with the presence of all 5 of her children and families for the Thanksgiving holiday. Public viewing will begin at 3:00 p. m. Wednesday, November 29, 2023, with visitation with the family beginning at 5:30 p. m. and a Prayer Service at 7:30 p. m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton, Iowa. A family funeral service will be 10:30 a. m. on Thursday with Rev. Michael Boothby officiating followed by burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family. The funeral service will be recorded and available later on the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Webpage, Facebook, and YouTube. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to Sioux Center Health Hospice. Sandra Ann Gradert was born May 19, 1943, in Downey, California, the daughter of Lester and Lois (Hedden) De Vries. She attended Alcester, South Dakota High School. Sandra married the love of her life, Wilbur Lee Gradert on March 21, 1961, in Pipestone, Minnesota. They lived near Ireton, Iowa, where Sandra and Wilbur raised their family. Sandy drove school bus for West Sioux School District for 9 years. She later worked for 10 years at Coilcraft, in addition to many numerous other jobs. The couple moved to Hawarden, Iowa in 1991, after retirement. Sandra loved spending time with her husband of 62 years, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, Bingo, gambling, and garage sales. She always had a special bond with her dogs, Peaches and Macie. Most importantly, Sandy loved her family and others with unwavering faithfulness. She ended every phone call and in-person visit with the words…love you! She is survived by her husband Wilbur of 62 years; her 5 children, Carolyn and Dana Munns of Diamondhead, Mississippi Julie Strong and fiancé Jeff Dreesen of Yankton, South Dakota, Lisa and Mark Luschen of Gulfport, Mississippi, Gerad and Danielle Gradert of Ireton, and Brad and Courtney Gradert of Mooresville, Indiana; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Norma (Bill) Rabey of Akron, Iowa, Judy Danielson, John (Willy) De Vries, Lannie (Twila) De Vries, Evelyn Schoppman, Madonna (Chris) Grubb all of Hawarden, and Susan (George) Taylor of Le Mars, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and other family members. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and numerous other members of the family and dear friends. HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Rachel Jessie Yungeberg, 92, of Hawarden, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden. Funeral Service will be 11:00 a. m. Friday, September 1, 2023, at the Associated Church in Hawarden with Pastor Jean Layton officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton, Iowa followed by a luncheon at the Ireton Community Center. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a. m. to 10:30 a. m. Friday at the church and also at the luncheon. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family. Her family requests memorials be directed to the Associated Church in Hawarden, Hillcrest Health Care Services Activity Fund in Hawarden, or St. Croix Hospice in Sioux City. Rachel was born September 4, 1930, (She always said she was born the day the banks closed!) to Jess and Mable (Fox) Volentine at home on a farm north of Burt, Iowa. She graduated from Lone Rock High School in 1947. Rachel married Harry Dale Yungeberg on July 10, 1949, at the Presbyterian Church in Algona, Iowa. Three children were born to this union, Nancy Ailene, Marilyn Lee, and Ernest Dale. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, (making lots of matching dresses for the girls) and making blankets for her children and grandchildren. Rachel also liked putting puzzles together, playing cards, doing crafts, and taking care of the grandkids. She could whip up a meal on a minute’s notice! Her drink of choice was good strong fresh hot coffee! Rachel clerked a lot of house sales with her auctioneer husband Dale in Algona and the surrounding area. In 1965, they moved to Platte, South Dakota, then to Hawarden, Iowa in 1967. She worked at Swanson’s Hardware, Coast to Coast, and Coilcraft. After breaking her hip, she entered Hillcrest Health Care Services in October 2016. Mom loved playing Bingo at the care center and of course winning! She also loved all the games and entertainment. Rachel’s favorite place to be was sitting in the entryway of Hillcrest and watching who came in, usually with her leg over the arm of the rocking chair! We appreciate all the love and care given to her at Hillcrest; her care givers, her birthday twin nurse Hillary, Lisa Millage, and the whole staff at Hillcrest. Also, many thanks to Katie from St. Croix Hospice, she helped us greatly with meds, concern, and visits with mom through this point in her life. Rachel is survived by: her daughters, Nancy (Marlin) Eilts of Ireton, Iowa and Marilyn (Dennis) Plueger of Le Mars, Iowa and son, Ernie (Mary) Yungeberg of Valley Springs, South Dakota; her sister, Delores (Leroy) Thilges of Algona; sister-in-law, Marie Volentine of Council Bluffs, Iowa; grandchildren, Scott (Shahin) Eilts, Christopher (Shauna) Eilts, and Brett (Jolynne) Eilts; Chad (Shelly) Plueger, Jeromy (fiancée Kelly) Plueger, Brian (Alisha) Plueger, and Katie Detloff; Christopher (Heather) Yungeberg and Michael (Katie) Yungeberg; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; also survived by many loving nieces and nephews; good friends, Linda Waterman and Harlan and Linda Van Egdom. HAWARDEN, IOWA ~ Ellen Kay (Craft) Scroggs passed away on Wednesday, August 23rd, at the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital after fighting her long battle with cancer. She was surrounded with family and the care of loving nurses at the hospital. Funeral Service will be 11:00 a. m. Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the Associated Church in Hawarden, Iowa with Pastor Jean Layton officiating. A luncheon will follow the service, and then will be a private family committal at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a. m. to 10:30 a. m. Ellen Kay was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 27, 1939, the daughter of Morgan and Mabel (Mason) Craft. She went to Franklin High School and then continued her education at Iowa State University. She graduated with a teaching degree in Physical Education and taught one year in San Bernadino, California. After a whirlwind and long distance courtship, Kay married Frank Dike Scroggs August 11, 1962. They moved to Hawarden, Iowa where they started their new life together, raising three daughters. Kay became very involved in the community and was a member of the Associated Church, PEO, Library Board, and the Hospital Board. She also spent many years putting her "blood, sweat, and tears" into the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, and was honored as the Hawarden "Citizen of The Year" for her work. She volunteered and served as their director until her health prohibited her from doing so. According to her grandson, "Grandma was famous because everyone knew her. " When Kay was not volunteering her time, she liked to get together with friends, play cards (Bridge), travel, spend time at the cabin in Canada with her family, and watch football. Kay is survived by her two daughters, Peg (Michael) King of Bourne, Massachusetts and Marty Ragnow of Victoria, Minnesota; 6 grandchildren, Sarah Cronin, Frank Ragnow, Katie Ragnow, Jack Ragnow, Maddie Ragnow, and Elena King; a great-grandson, Jon Benson Ragnow; sister, Martha Smith of Rockford, Illinois; brother, Jim (Robin) Craft of Tarpon Springs, Florida; sister-in-law, Julie Scroggs of St. Louis, Missouri; and nieces and nephews. Please join the family in celebrating Dick’s life and honoring his memory at his Memorial Service at 10:30 a. m. Monday, August 28, 2023, at United Methodist Church in Hawarden, Iowa with Pastor Samuel Ansong officiating. The burial of the cremated remains will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. A luncheon will held at the Hawarden Community Center following the committal service. Dick Guy Dimmick was born on September 18th, 1935, to Barbara Bergman and Luverne Lundberg in Sioux City. He was adopted and raised by Esther (Harkness) and Guy Dimmick from Hawarden. Dick married Barbara Rausch in 1954 and they had three children. In 1962, Dick married Bonnie Miller and they had three children. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend to many. Dick was a man with a passion for all things with motors. He lived life in the fast lane, having driven race cars, trucks, motorcycles, and all-terrain side by sides. He had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. In his free time, Dick enjoyed playing pool and recently discovered a love for the game of pickleball. He was always active, embracing life to the fullest. He could hardly say no to rescuing every animal he came across and taking care of all the wild animals in his yard. He worked in construction and truck driving and only recently hung up the keys to his backhoe at Runge Construction. Dick was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Bonnie (Miller) Dimmick, and his children, Lance Rausch and his wife Lynn, DeLinda Allison, Brenda Jurrens and her husband Dan, Donna Kelley and her husband Bob, and Penny Paparteys and her husband Bill. He is also survived by his brothers, Jack Howell, Buster Tippery, Richard and Roger Lundberg, and his sisters, Donna Jurgensen, Carla Lundberg, Katie Edson and Donna Howell. He has 18 grandchildren: Jeremy, Jesse, and Rose Dimmick, Joshia, Benjamin, and Krista Rausch, Tess Kula, David and Jason Mills, Natosha Schurch, Chris Scarbro, Emily Rodriguez, Kody and Karlton Waterman, Kayla Schurch, Kyle, Danielle, and Skyeler Paparteys and numerous great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Dennis Dimmick; and his brothers, Jim Howell and Mike Lundberg. The memory of Dick Guy Dimmick will forever be cherished by his family and friends. Burial will be at Grace Hill Cemetery with a luncheon following at the West Sioux High School. Visitation with the family will be from 5:30 p. m. to 7:00 p. m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p. m. on Wednesday, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The family prefers memorials be directed to American Cancer Society. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the Trinity Lutheran Church Facebook page. Joyce Ann Boyer lost her battle to cancer on July 31st, 2023. Joyce was born Dec. 15th 1966 in Hawarden, Iowa to Raymond and Barbara McPherson. She attended West Sioux High School and graduated in 1985. She then attended Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City. She worked at several banks in the area and Iowa Lamb in Hawarden before opening her own nail salon and then opened Gypsy Soul in downtown Hawarden. Gypsy Soul was established in memory of her daughter, Ashley, who passed away in 2016. Joyce was an incredibly strong woman, with an unwavering sense of humor. Her friends and family will always remember all of the pranks and shenanigans she would get into. She was always one to stand out in a crowd, and her laugh was absolutely contagious. She was fiercely protective of all of those she cared for and was so transparent about those she loved. She spent a large amount of her free time loving up on her dogs, Sadie, Jack, and Max. If you knew her, you knew you could find her singing karaoke any place karaoke could be found. During the summer months, she loved to be out at her favorite place, Fort Randall, where she found the perfect mixture of peace and fun. Joyce will be dearly missed by her husband of 28 years, Aaron; her son Jett and fiancé Amelia Stene; mother, Barbara McPherson; siblings, Rick (Deb) McPherson, Brad (Teresa) McPherson, Doug (Erin) McPherson, Larry (Shelly) McPherson; brothers-in-law, Byron (Jane) Boyer, Luke Boyer, Dan (Laurie) Boyer, Bill (Roxy) Boyer; and many nieces and nephews.
