"Maura Callahan, 74, finished her life journey August 22, 2023 as her spirit separated from her body and flew out the window. Walking the cancer path for nearly two years, she never lost her humor or her love for life along the way. Originally from The East (as she was quick to divulge to strangers) Maura resided in Fort Collins, Colorado since 2015. She spent most of the past decade helping children (and some seniors) learn to love the world around them, especially her two beloved grandchildren, Emile Depew (10) and Ambrose Depew (6). Born February 12, 1949, Maura spent her childhood in post-war suburban Connecticut along the Long Island Sound, where she developed an infinite love of the ocean and all the beauty it holds. She was the second of eight children and helped her parents raise her younger siblings. Her mother, Pat, was a stay-at-home mom and her father, Neil, built roads and developed land. In her young adult years Maura moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where she met Ned Depew, her long-time partner and father to their two children. Maura and Ned joined with friends and formed chosen family to establish homesteads and communities in New Hampshire and Massachusetts that ran counter to the dominant culture of the time. Maura spent several life-changing years working at the Fernald State School (with developmentally disabled youth) and at the Walker Home and School for Boys (with "pre-delinquent" boys). These experiences were the basis of her life-long dedication to helping children thrive. In the late 1970s Maura and Ned began a family and started working with adults with disabilities at Fidelity House, a professional focus that continued until Maura chose to complete an adult degree program in Vermont in her 40s. There she explored her love and aptitude for writing, delivering a final thesis on the movement of water as a symbol of life. Although never formally trained, much like her own mother, Maura brought the hand and eye of an artist to everything she touched in the world. Maura dedicated both her personal and professional life to helping and protecting children by extending endless patience and empathy. As a social worker in Albany, New York during her later career (for both Berkshire Farms and Catholic Charities) she was admired for her special knack for supporting troubled young mothers do what their children most needed of them within the child protective and foster care system. In a final act of connecting with water, Maura's body was cremated using alkaline hydrolysis, also known as aquamation or water cremation, as an eco-friendly final disposition. Maura was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Danny Callahan, and a sister, Shayne Callahan. She is survived by her sisters, Jeannie Barbato (Tony) and Ann Callahan, her brothers, Bob Callahan (Lisa), Neil Callahan (Sandi), and Tom Callahan (Kathy), and her children, Ursula Depew and Honore Depew (Brittany), as well as her two grandchildren, many nieces and nephews - and countless people she touched as a "second mother" and giver of unconditional love. A celebration of life will be held by Neil and Sandi Callahan on Saturday, October 14 at their home in Larimer County, near Fort Collins. Please contact honoredepew@gmail. com if you would like to attend. Donations in Maura's name may be made to Illuminate Colorado, which strengthens families, organizations and communities to prevent child maltreatment. https://illuminatecolorado. org/donate/"

Diana was very active, playing basketball for the Boston Women\u0027s City league, as well as refereed women\u0027s basketball. She moved from Massachusetts to Colorado in 1976, fell in love with the beauty, and had lived there ever since. Diana worked for CSU for many years, her most recent title being accounting tech. She retired in 2011, and was very glad to have the time to visit with her kids and grandkids whom she loved very much. Also to be able to spend time with her husband and cats. She loved nature all her life, and she loved and taught her kids about adventure, and exploring new places. She and Steve spent many years fishing, hiking, and exploring the Rocky mountains. Their very first time meeting was on a singles group hike, in Rocky Mountain National Park. When she was younger in Massachusetts, she spent many long hours at the beaches and enjoying the ocean. Diana always had a great love for animals, and rescued and raised many over the years. She enjoyed reading, especially scripture and spiritual reads, puzzles, and word games. In her later years, she developed a love for football, which she watched with Steve, and discussed with her son Neil every Sunday. Her greatest love was the love of her life, Steve, and being able to share her life with him. As much love as she had for all of these, none could compare to the love she had for Jesus, and we as a family thank our Lord for not making her suffer. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, until we meet again. Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the animal shelter. "Show more

Kathleen Nicol

Kathleen Nicol

Age - 76

November 27, 2023

Kathleen Collins Nicol (Mary Kathleen Collins) known to her friends as "Kathy" born March 17, 1947 in La Canada, California passed away peacefully at her home in Fort Collins on Saturday, November 18, 2023. An unsung hero of Fort Collins and Larimer County, Kathy had dedicated her life to improving the circumstances of those less fortunate. No stranger to tragedy herself, Kathy's childhood home burned down along with all of the families' possessions when she was in elementary school, and her father passed away unexpectedly shortly thereafter when she was only ten. Despite these early hardships, Kathy persevered and built a marvelous life for herself and her family. Kathy raised two amazing children, Zach and Maija Nicol, and is survived by both, along with their partners, Justie Nicol and Esther Cerda, and her grandchildren, Logan (6) and Asher (8). Her husband, John C. Nicol, predeceased her in 2017 after an Alzheimer's battle. Kathy was 76 years young. Kathy enjoyed traveling the world, hiking and skiing in Summit County, playing with her adorable dog, Penny, and spending time with her family and friends. Kathy was fiercely independent. Most who had seen her in recent months did not know that she had been battling cancer. Kathy handled her treatments with dignity and grace and relied on her voluminous local "village" for support. She was forever grateful for the companionship offered by the community and her large group of friends who helped her keep a positive attitude. Kathy moved to Fort Collins after graduating from the University of Colorado in 1969. However, she was clearly born to have an impact on Fort Collins (having Collins in her name after all), and the city has always been her true home. She spent most of her adult life supporting her family's real estate endeavors in Campus West Shops and running Nicol Realty. Although residential real estate was not something she particularly enjoyed, she remained a commercial real estate broker until her retirement in 2017. Kathy touched many many lives throughout the years. She has held leadership positions in the Rotary Club of Fort Collins, Homeward Alliance, Junior League of Fort Collins, and many others. Kathy has volunteered for many years at the Lincoln Center and the Larimer County Food Bank. Kathy would secretly give money and time to a variety of organizations, and then give credit to others. Kathy has made charitable contributions to the United Way, Poudre Valley Library, and most recently the Poudre Valley Hospital Foundation's capital campaign. Not only is the ambulance collection on display at PVH a donation from the Nicol Family, but Kathy also made personal and familial contributions with the help of the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado to support the new orthopedic wing coming in the Fall of 2024. Services for Kathy Nicol will be held at 2:00 p. m. December 10, 2023, at the Fort Collins Country Club (1920 Country Club Road, Fort Collins, CO 80524). A short service will be held, followed by a "big party" consistent with Kathy's wishes. Please come prepared with stories to share and plan to stay to socialize. In keeping with Kathy's spirit of giving, the family asks that a donation be made to the Rotary Club of Fort Collins charitable fund in lieu of flowers. Donations made until December 5, 2023 will be eligible for matching as part of Colorado Gives Day, and the family encourages anyone so inclined to leverage their donation prior to that date for a greater impact. The link to donate is: . Please add a dedication "Dedicated to the memory of Kathy Nicol. " All donations are tax-deductible to a 501(c)(3), and funds will be used to support local Community Grants, the committee where Kathy was the most active in giving.Show more
