James Stratigos

James Stratigos

Age - 86

June 23, 2023

James "Jimmy" H. Stratigos passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at his home in North Huntingdon, PA. Mr. Stratigos was born on October 5, 1936, in Milopotoamos, a small village on the island of Kythera, Greece. At the age of 13, he immigrated to America, and was placed into a first-grade classroom because he did not know the language. However, his lack of knowledge was no barrier to his desire to learn and be successful. When his father Harry G. Stratigos first came to America, he shared a message with him that would forever fuel a passion to create something extraordinary: "America is the land where you can build your dream, the land of opportunity. If you're willing to work, have faith in God, and love your family, you can have anything you dream". Following graduation from McKeesport High School, he attended the Culinary Institute where he further explored his love to cook, create, and serve others. While studying, he so proudly served his country United States Army Reserves offering 6 years of service. James and his father opened their first catering service in 1957. Operating out of their basement home in White Oak, PA along with a hollowed out 1949 Packard, they worked together to cater events. While working towards his dream of becoming a chef, he met his beloved wife Stella Xenia Stamoulis of Trenton, New Jersey who he happily married in 1960. With the support of his devoted wife and parents, Jimmy expanded his once small basement operated catering business, into a family empire. By 1965, the business outgrew their home and into a facility on Lincoln Way in White Oak. Here, the business grew from one Volkswagen catering bus to a fleet of over 20 trucks. He became the exclusive caterer of Kennywood Park, Gateway Clipper Fleet, church halls, and numerous event centers in the greater Pittsburgh area. In 2003, his dream continued to come true as he and his son Harry James opened up the Stratigos Banquet Centre in North Huntingdon, PA. Mr. Stratigos's son Harry and grandson Jimmy share his love for cooking and have continued his legacy at Stratigos Banquet Centre. In 2022, the father son duo took on a new location naming it "The James Room" to honor and pay tribute to his legacy. Jimmy was always challenged to do more and do better. Being in the food industry for decades, he witnessed much poverty and all the challenges that come with it. Like so many immigrants, he truly understood what it was like to be hungry. With this life experience, Jimmy was humbled and honored to help feed the less fortunate and support anyone in need. James was very proud of his Greek Orthodox faith and heritage. He devoted much of his life to the Annunciation Church in White Oak where he served two years as parish president. His passion for the faith was recognized by His Eminence Metropolitan Savas, who awarded him for his years of devotion to the Church with the St. Photios award in 2016. Mr. Stratigos was a man known for his pure passion to serve his family and community and was adored by so many. Jimmy will forever be remembered by his sense of humor, smiling face, and warm embrace. We will never forget his love for America, kindness, hospitality, and humility. James Stratigos is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years Stella X. Stratigos, and their four children, George, Roula (Jim), Harry, and Maria (Stelio). He also leaves a legacy behind for their 10 beautiful grandchildren, Stella, Sophia, Christina; Antegoni (Dimitri), Pavlos, Stellanie; Alexandra (Ethan), Jimmy; Niko, and Demitra along with their wonderful koumbari, beloved godchildren, Stamatia and Demetri, many nieces, nephews, as well as great-nieces and -nephews. His grandchildren have countless memories of their beloved Pappou, one of which being a modern food critic of everywhere he went. . . he loved the footlong hotdog and banana split from the Dairy Queen in White Oak! His memory will continue to live on as we continue to create in the kitchen, share compassion with God's people, and remember to live out the possibilities of the American dream. Family and friends will gather at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc. , 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177) on Sunday, June 4, 2023 from 3:00 p. m. until 8:00 p. m. (Traditional Greek Orthodox Trisagion Service at 6:00 p. m. ). There will be an additional gathering period at the Annunciation of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, 1128 Summit Street, White Oak, PA 15131, on Monday, June 5, 2023 from 10:00 a. m. until the time of service at 11:00 a. m. Russell Brignano

Russell Brignano

Age - 87

April 28, 2023

Russell C. Brignano, PhD, dearly beloved husband of Mary Germann Brignano, died on April 8 at Family Hospice at Canterbury Place at the age of 87. An Emeritus Professor of English in the Penn State University system, he was a kind, thoughtful, warm and caring man who loved his family and friends. He was also smart and witty, adept at wordplay and a master of puns. He was devoted to reading, baseball, classical music, the ocean, and growing vegetables -- though not eating very many of them! He was strong-willed, courageous and believed in social justice. He never missed voting in any election and served for many years as a Judge of Elections in his then voting district in Squirrel Hill. Russ grew up in Hartford and West Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Joseph and Adelina Alda Accomasso Brignano. They were a hardworking family, and he had numerous jobs during high school, where he succeeded academically, in student government, and in sports. Known in West Hartford for his baseball skills, he also started on two high school state championship soccer teams. He attended Dartmouth College on one of the first Daniel Webster National Scholarships, an academic award for young men of "unusual achievement and promise as students and citizens. " Russ loved and appreciated his Dartmouth education because it taught him to think, he said. An international relations major, he maintained a lifelong interest in foreign affairs. He was active in student government and a member of two honorary societies, Green Key and Casque & Gauntlet, as well as Sigma Nu fraternity. He remained a loyal donor to the college all his life. At Dartmouth he also played freshman and varsity baseball. During college summers, he captained the American Legion West Hartford baseball team for two years and played on semi-pro teams in the Hartford, Connecticut, Twilight League. After returning home from 18 months' service in the U. S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division, mainly in Schweinfurt, West Germany, he worked successfully in the Hartford insurance industry. He changed careers when he decided to go to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his PhD in English in 1966. He came to Pittsburgh to teach at Carnegie Mellon University and later joined the Penn State system, teaching mainly at the Beaver Campus and also at the main campus and the University of Pittsburgh. He was the author of two books, Richard Wright: The Man and His Works (University of Pittsburgh Press), and Black Americans in Autobiography (Duke University Press) as well as numerous articles and reviews. He was the prime force behind the establishment of a significant collection of Black American autobiography at the Beaver Campus library. The collection was dedicated in his honor when he retired in 1997. Although he and Mary enjoyed travel, Russ loved Pittsburgh from the start and never wanted to leave this friendly city with such easy access to the Pirates and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. In retirement Russ thoroughly enjoyed reading the daily Post-Gazette and New York Times, books, and The New Yorker. He loved the friends he made in his book group, which began meeting more than 30 years ago. His gardening skills produced delicious tomatoes, which he froze and relished throughout the winter. An avid follower of baseball, he attended more than 600 Major League games, mainly in Pittsburgh but also across the country and in Canada. He documented every game in his scorebooks. He is survived by Mary, his wife and best friend. Other survivors include his brother Robert (Sally) of Danville, California; his sister Carolyn Constantine (Bill) of Newington, Connecticut; stepsister-in-law Joy Ramsey Shussett (David); stepbrother-in-law Duke Ramsey and stepsister-in-law Antoinette Ramsey Bittner; cousins-in-law Martha (Charles) Oliver and Kate (James) Lind; and nieces and nephews and their spouses. Survivors also include the Demarest family, dear friends who have been essentially family for over 55 years: Marlene (the late David), Victoria, James, and Elizabeth. At Russ's request, there will be no service; a private gathering may be scheduled in the future. If you would like to make a contribution in his memory, please consider the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Dartmouth College, or the American Civil Liberties Union.
