Matthew Todd Davarn, age 45, of Gowen, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, September 1, 2023. He was born in Lansing, MI on March 26, 1978, the son of Timothy and Laura (Platte) Davarn. He graduated from Rockford High School with the class of 1996. Matt had a successful career with Consumers Energy for almost 23 years. He started his career as an Electrician Lineman, he soon was promoted to an In charge Journeyman meter worker. He maintained meters in the greater Big Rapids, Greenville, and North Kent area. Matt was very knowledgeable about Consumers Energy new metering systems and recently started up a new mentor program within the company. Matt was well respected amongst his peers. He was a go getter and worked hard to make sure he was the best version of himself every day. Outside of his career his greatest accomplishments were his children. His four children were his highest priority and he loved them dearly. Matt was a wonderful father and enjoyed spending time with his children as much as he possibly could. Matthew was very active and had many hobbies and passions such as: classic cars, hunting, and golfing. He was also an avid outdoorsman and was a huge Notre Dame Football fan. Matthew will be deeply missed by his children, Rocky Davarn, Luke Davarn, Brooke Davarn, Paul Davarn; parents, Tim and Laura Davarn; brothers, Mark (Krista Heminger) Davarn, Mike Davarn; special friend, Mandy Lum; many cousins; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William and Bertha Davarn; and maternal grandparents, Joseph and Lucy Platte. A memorial gathering for Matthew will take place on Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, held at Hurst Funeral Home. Helen L. Rauch, age 89, of Gowen, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2022 at her home. The daughter of George H. & Viola M. (Rentsman) Houck, she was born on January 21, 1933 in Grand Rapids. On June 12, 1953, in Belding, she married Burton J. Rauch and together they raised four children and enjoyed 40 years of marriage until Burton passed away on September 11, 1993. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, her life revolved around her family. As her children were growing up, she always had an open door, a snack, or an extra spot at the table for friends and neighbors. In later years, Helen delighted in participating with Eight-Cap's Foster Grandparent program at Baldwin Heights Elementary School in Greenville. She had attended the former Hillcrest Free Methodist Church in Greenville and more recently attended the Oakhill Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids with her son. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Burton J. Rauch; a son, Brian Rauch on June 4, 2020; two daughters-in-law, Debbie (Kosten) Rauch on January 18, 2015, and Teresa (Riker) Rauch on July 25, 2020; two brothers, Herb Houck and Don Houck; and a sister, Nancy Thompson. Surviving are her children, Mary & Tom Steffes of Gowen, Carlton Rauch of Mears, and George Rauch of Gowen; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a brother, Chuck & Priscilla Houck; and several nieces and nephews. , 511 S. Alger Lee "Toby" Johnson, age 84, of Gowen, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at home under the loving care of his family and Spectrum Health Hospice. The son of Harry & Katharine C. (Finucane) Johnson, he was born on May 17, 1938 in Greenville. After graduating from Lakeview High School in 1956, Toby began a career with the R. J. Tower Corporation in Greenville, first as a press operator, then as a lead man spot welder, while also serving as the union's vice-president. In 1971 the joined the management ranks as a Foreman, then was promoted to Night Operations Manager in 1973, Maintenance Manager/Plant Engineer in 1978, Manager of Stamping Operations in 1986, Director of Special Projects in 1989, and retired in 1993 after 34 years of dedicated service to the company and his fellow associates. Toby's lifelong passion for attention to detail and "getting things right the first time" will long be remembered by his family. . . and especially his children. On May 2, 1959, at Belding, he married Beatrice Ann Mays. Together they raised four children and enjoyed 43 years of marriage until Bea passed away on August 3, 2002. While Toby worked at Tower's and Bea in her own beauty salon, together they enjoyed golfing, traveling, and camping. He had been a member of the Sons of the American Legion at the Ray I. Booth American Legion Post No. 101, the Eagles Lodge, and the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bea Johnson; two brothers and two sisters, Ivan Johnson, Patricia Brewster, Betty Phillips, and Bobby Johnson. Surviving are his children, Katie Johnson of Greenville, Brenda Lee Johnson & Rebecca Guerrero of White Cloud, Robert James Johnson & Jennifer Baker of Greenville, and Jill Ann & Mike Scott of The Colony, Texas; his dear friend and companion of the past 17 years, Beverly Andersen of Ionia; nine grandchildren, Danielle & Matt Mulholland, Jenny & John Simons, Jeanette Glover, Keaton Johnson, Drew Johnson and her fiancee, Shane Wright, Lauren Scott, Logan Scott, Travis Scott, and Ian Scott; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Shirley & Jim Cowles of Belding; and several nieces and nephews. , 511 S. The son of Albert & Sandra (Haines) Towne, he was born on St. Valentine's Day, February 14, 1964 in Belding. On December 7, 1984, in Stanton, he married Tracy Lynne Kirby and together they enjoyed 37 years of marriage and raised two children. Ross spent most of his working years as a mechanic and delighted in restoring just about anything with horsepower! Ferris Benjamin Johnson, Sr. , age 81, of Gowen, passed away late Tuesday morning, January 4, 2022 at his home under the loving care of his family and Spectrum Health Hospice. The son of Felix Benjamin & Nora Mae (Dobbe) Johnson, he was born on July 21, 1940 in Greenville. After graduating from Greenville High School, Ferris enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served stateside during the Vietnam War era. He attained the rank of Corporal and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Markman's Badge. On December 19, 1964, in Alma, Michigan, he married Mary Ann Pawluczyk and together they raised five children and enjoyed 57 years of marriage. Ferris retired from the former Electrolux Home Products, where he worked in quality control, and was a member of U. A. W. Local 137. He was a longtime member of Settlement Lutheran Church and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and camping with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Darlene Taylor; and two brothers, Robert Johnson, and Richard Johnson, Sr. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Johnson of Gowen; their children, Theresa Dickinson of Mattawan, Lisa & Jon Smidt of Peyton, Colorado, Ferris B. & Jennifer Johnson, Jr. of Hubbardston, Tammy & Rick Roy of Greenville, and Denise Hoppe of West Valley City, Utah; twelve grandchildren, Kaci & Travis Walker, Krista Dickinson, Amber & Orlando Montoya, Jonathan & Katelyn Smidt, Michael Johnson, Kaitlynn Johnson, McKayla Johnson, Marcus & Ashleigh Roy, Marissa & Michael O'Neill, Stephen & Dana Roy, Harrison Hoppe, and Jake Hoppe; eight great-grandchildren with three more expected later this year; a sister-in-law, Leona Johnson of Langston; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. , 1031 Johnson Road, Gowen, , with Pastor Betsy Kamphuis and Vicar Edward Ruble officiating. Jacqueline Dorothy "Jackie" Redding, age 88, of Gowen, passed away Monday evening, January 3, 2022. The daughter of Elmer Iva & Evelyn Marion (Ruster) Kuiper, she was born on July 12, 1933 in Holland, Michigan. In her youth she pollenated flowers at a nursery and as an adult worked as staff assistant in other businesses, but most of her life was devoted to being good daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. Her fondest childhood memories were with her bother Dale playing at her grandmother's home on Lake Michigan. Starting with her dad's hunting dogs, there was always a dog or two in her life. Standing 5'7", she was on the Oakleigh High School woman's basketball team in 1949 at the age of 16. Soon after graduating from high school, she met her husband Carl at a dance in Ravenna. They married two years later, soon after Carl joined the U. S. Air Force. Married at 22, she traveled the world, lived in Japan, road elephants in India, visited Buddhist temples in Thailand and flew on Military transports. As an Air Force wife, she organized and hosted formal socials and service projects. She enjoyed drawing, learned to paint and eventually taught painting classes in Greenville. Her paintings hang in many people's homes today. She also taught her grandchildren to paint and encouraged their creativity and imagination in other areas as well. She enjoyed the seasons in West Michigan and all the activities particularly the summers sailing and swimming with her friends and grandchildren as well as walks in the woods with her dogs. She played the organ and piano at church, taught classes, served as President of the Relief Society, and often helped complete strangers. She worked through physical and emotional afflictions most of her life that include the death of her father at 19, car accident at 30, death of her son at 70, and stroke at 71. Through years of numerous surgeries and months in hospitals, she typically thought of others, exemplified kindness and showed patience despite her own suffering. She consistently showed love for all her family and friends with understanding and unwavering hope, prayer and fasting for them. When asked, what has been your greatest lesson in life, she replied, to forgive others and forgive yourself. Stop carrying grievances. Stop banging yourself in the head. Get over it, let go of it, and free yourself to live a happier life. Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer & Evelyn Kuiper; her parents-in-law, Cyril & Dorothy Redding; a brother, Dale Kuiper; and a son, Brent Redding.
