"Mary Agnes Zahradka, 93, of Mechanicsville, VA, died at home on October 2, 2023. Born and raised in Prince George, VA, she lived independently in Petersburg, VA, until she was 91. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph J. Zahradka, Sr. ; and daughter-in-law, D. Karla Zahradka. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Reiner (Steve); son, A. James Zahradka, Jr. ; and grandson, Nicholas J. Zahradka (Noel); as well as sister, Emily Uhrich Cerny. Mary was an employee at Southern States Southside Cooperative for over 30 years, and after retirement, continued working in the garden center there. She served as secretary to the Czech Slovak Association (CSA) for 71 years. Mary was always willing to share stories; she was a wealth of information of local Czech people and culture. A lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, she volunteered in the office and enjoyed tending the plants in the commons. Mary was an angel to many people, making regular visits to the sick and elderly, writing encouraging notes, and making phone calls up to her death. Although Mary did not seek the spotlight, she generously gave her time and energy to many individuals, charities, and organizations. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at the Petersburg Chapel at J. T. Morriss \u0026amp; Son Funeral Home. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 12 noon, on Monday, October 9, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Petersburg, VA. The interment will be private. Betty McLaughlin Ellen, 85 of Mechanicsville, VA peacefully passed away on December 5, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband William Dee Ellen, her parents Bernard William McLaughlin and Inez Barksdale McLaughlin, her sister Yvonne McLaughlin Olphin, her daughter in law Diana Smiley Ellen, four nephews Mark S. Olphin, John R. Marshall III, B. Kevin McLaughlin, Walter L. Olphin III and sister in laws, Sybil Ellen Ward and Jean Ellen Marshall. Left to cherish her memory are her children Andrew Dee Ellen (Brooks Stanley), William Matthew Ellen (Deena), Amy Ellen Elkin (Eric), her brother Billy Bernard McLaughlin (Joyce), brother in laws Walter Linwood Olphin Jr. and Emmett Lee Ellen (Judy), six Grandchildren Joanna Ellen Chapin (Colton), Rebecca Ellen Banks (Tyson), Kole David Elkin (Samantha Weaver), Elizabeth Gray Ellen, Hunter Rhea Ellen and Bella Grace Elkin, Two Great Grandchildren Justin Wayne Brooks Jr. and William Ryder Chapin, Numerous nieces and nephews and two special friends, Sarah Leigh Hilldrup and Elizabeth Washington. , 67 years old, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on November 10th at VCU Medical Center after a long, well-fought battle with cancer. He was born December 30, 1955, and lived in the Richmond area all his life. Tommy and his wife, Jeanie, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary in October. He attended Henrico High School and worked for both UPS and A. H. Robins after graduation. Later, he studied at VCU and completed his BS in accounting, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1995. His senior year he was awarded the Thalhimer scholarship and was inducted into the Beta Gama Sigma honor society. He also received the 1994-1995 Business School's Student of the Year in Accounting award. After receiving his CPA certification, Tommy worked for Wheat First Securities through their many mergers and ended his career as Director of Accounting at Owens & Minor when he retired in 2020. Tommy used his expertise to help family and friends with finances and volunteered for many years as treasurer of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member, and the Wooddy's Hundred Homeowners Association. He had an enormous affection for motorcycles that began as a teenager and continued to ride frequently through the years. Tommy raced his KTM after high school, however, his true love was BMW motorcycles. He owned several of them during his many years of riding and shared his great love and skill with his son, Dylan. They often rode and attended various rider-skill training courses together. Tommy was a member of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America and a Life Member of the American Motorcycle Association. Tommy had the utmost love for his family and friends. He always prioritized spending time together through family meals, vacations, and poolside gatherings at home. His friendships with the Styer family spanned more than 50 years and he enjoyed many close relationships with other friends and church family members. His great care and concern for his brother, Mike, supported him through his recent illness and death. Tommy was a true gentleman whose sly sense of humor was with him to the end. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, and grandfather and missed by so many. Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy A. and Jackie Sheets, and his brother, Mike. He is survived by his wife, Jean Stephens Sheets, two children, Erin Elder (Brett) and Dylan (Charlotte), sister, Leslie Davis (Scott), nephew, Drew Davis (Caroline), and his beloved grandchildren, June Leigh Sheets, and Henry Thomas Elder. They are honored to carry on his legacy. A memorial service is planned for 11 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church (5351 Pole Green Road, Mechanicsville, VA). Marlene Porter Bresee, 65, of Mechanicsville, VA passed away in her home on Friday, November 24th. Originally from Winchester, VA, Marlene graduated from James Wood High School in 1976 and Virginia Commonwealth University in 1980. She worked for many years at Kings Dominion, VRPS, and later Northside Baptist Church in Mechanicsville. She was a long-time member of Calvary Chapel Mechanicsville. Marlene loved with ferocity, with thoughtfulness, with patience, and, most of all, with food. She loved pedicures, puppy smell, white Christmases, Cardinals baseball, cruises, penny slots, and hosting all those she loved. She was a sister who always had your back, a wife who cared in ways that no one else could, an aunt who cherished you while telling it how it is, and a mother whose greatest treasures in life were her children. Those who knew Marlene know that it is an understatement to say that she will be missed. So we say instead: Marlene will be missing. Missing from her soulmate Frank, her sisters, Stephanie Porter Radunzel and Leah Porter Henderson, her children Cassidy and Kate, her nieces and nephews, Jacob Bresee, McKenna Jaynes, Jordan Hebenstreit, and Kalen Radunzel, as well as many great nieces and nephews and other loved ones.
