Mary Schulman Obituary

Mary Falat Schulman passed away gently and peacefully on April 19, 2023 at age 79 after a courageous battle with cancer that spanned more than a year. She fought cancer with the same determination and courage she showed throughout her life. After graduating from Northern Illinois University she went on to earn a Masters Degree in Special Education from Columbia University in New York. Her career included teaching EMH and TMH children at the West Suburban Association for Special Education where she used her compassion and creativity to achieve results with her students that few thought possible, while making friendships that lasted her entire life. As important as teaching was to her, she interrupted her career to pursue adoption of her sons, Michael and Jonathan and her daughter, Melissa, all of whom she loved totally and unconditionally. She was a devoted mother, a family counselor of great empathy and wisdom, and a strong force in their lives. Mary is survived by her husband, Jerry, her wonderful children Jonathan and Melissa, her adored grandchildren Olivia and Michael Schulman, her brother Robert Falat, her nephew Bryan (Nicole) Falat, her niece Kimberly (Ty) Towse and many, many cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Michael, and by her parents, Walter and Ethel Falat. Visitation will be on Monday, April 24, 2023 from 10am until 12:30pm at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55 Street, Countryside, Illinois, with interment to follow at Bronswood Cemetery, 3805 Madison Street, Oak Brook, Illinois.
