She went home to Heaven on December 7, 2023. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1944, and from Ball State University in June of 1948 with a BS degree in Elementary Education. She married Samuel Ray Twining on June 26, 1948, in Mishawaka. They moved to Marinette, Wisconsin where Jean was a kindergarten teacher at Park Elementary School for a year before she and Ray started their family, and Ray began his career at Ansul. In 1953, Jean moved with her family to Menominee, Michigan, where she resided until 2019. Jean was very active in the community and a strong supporter of her children, her family, her church, American Field Service, PEO, American Association of University Women, continuing education, the Milwaukee Symphony, and UW Marinette. She was a member of Pioneer Presbyterian Church, and served as an Elder, a Deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and as President of the Women's Association. She was a volunteer Area Representative for the American Field Service student exchange program from 1966-1986. Her responsibilities included coordinating placements and activities for visiting students in Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Negaunee, Powers, Stephenson, and Menominee in Michigan, and Crivitz, Coleman, Oconto, Marinette, and Sister Bay in Wisconsin. Jean's family hosted Yoshiko Takeda, a Japanese AFS student, in1965-1966. As a result, the Twinings visited Yoshiko and her family in Japan, and Yoshiko returned a number of times to visit them here. Jean was a member and past president of Chapter BK, PEO Sisterhood. She was a member of the steering committee for the annual Milwaukee Symphony concerts. She taught Junior Great Books at the Menominee Middle School for many years. Jean was a Campfire Girl while growing up, achieving the highest rank, and continued that interest as a Girl Scout leader for her daughter's Girl Scout troop. She was a member of the UW Green Bay Marinette Foundation Board from 2005-2009. Jean enjoyed tennis, the outdoors, skiing, cross country skiing, traveling, and water walking at the Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, and is survived by her 3 children: Jan (Paul) Prestin of Howard, Wisconsin, Scott Twining of Menominee, Michigan, and David (Pat) Twining of Sterling, Illinois, and by 4 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the M&M YMCA, the University of Wisconsin Green Bay Marinette Foundation, or the Pioneer Presbyterian Church in Marinette.Show more
