"Mary Lou Marcum Nolan, "Lou," 86, of Columbia, SC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 1, 2023. Born in Kirk, WV, on February 1, 1937, to the late Lonzo and Gladys Marcum. Lou grew up in Dingess, surrounded by a large, loving family with many aunts, uncles, and cousins with whom she shared many fond memories. She was a 1954 graduate of Lenore High School. Among other things too numerous to mention, some highlights of her professional career include instrument rated pilot, CEO of Atlantis Airlines, a fixed-base operator, and real estate broker. She was Chair of the Richland County Republican Party and member of the Greater Columbia Community Relations Council. Lou served as the President of Five Points Rotary Club in Columbia from 2009 to 2012, and she also served as the Assistant Governor of the State Rotary Club. She was named a Paul Harris Fellow multiple times by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. She was also named by the American Heart Association as a Red Dress Ambassador. Lou began her professional career in Commercial Real Estate and was involved in the development of several buildings, including Middleburg Condominiums and Middleburg Office Complex in Columbia. Her extensive involvement in politics has included service as Chair and Executive Committeeman of the Richland County Republican Party, an alternate delegate at the 2008 National Republican Convention, and a member of the Capital City Republican Women\u0027s Club and South Carolina Federation of Republican Women. In 2015, Lou was a South Carolina Delegate to the Republican National Convention held in Cleveland, OH. She led Richland County\u0027s successful efforts to raise the county\u0027s fair share of the Milliken Challenge, and she initiated the Ivory Banquet as a fundraiser to kick-off the party conventions. In 2013 a resolution by the South Carolina Senate was presented to Lou in recognition and honor for her years of outstanding service to the Republican Party. Lou was appointed by Governor Mark Sanford as Museum Commissioner in the state of South Carolina, and she served as a docent at the Columbia Museum of Art. After her distinguished career, Lou received a bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in Art History in 2004. In addition to her parents, Lou is preceded in death by her cherished siblings, Ollie Dent, Bernice Powell, and Denzil L. Marcum; and a very special nephew, Mark Crawford. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Patrick Nolan. The love and dedication they had for each other was truly one of a kind. Having no natural children of her own, Lou became a surrogate mother to her nieces, Heather (Brent) Robinson and Lou (Jared) Potter, after the sudden death of her sister-in-law, Kaye Davis Marcum, in 1992. She is also survived by nephews, Tom Dent, Vic (Linda) Dent, Ben Dent, and Daniel (Crystal) Marcum. Also surviving Lou are nieces, Lonella (Joseph) Harding, Karen (Jeff) Spade, and Kim (Bob) Stagg. Additionally, she leaves behind a host of extended family and friends. There will be two celebrations of life. The first celebration will be on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 12:00 p. m. (family to call at 11:00 a. m. ) at Evans Funeral Home at 334 Crawley Creek Road, Chapmanville, WV 25508 with interment following at Nelson Family Cemetery in Dingess, WV. The second celebration will be on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 4:00 p. m. at Shives Funeral Home at 7600 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29223. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Lou's honor to the American Heart Association at 7272 Greenville Avenue Dallas, TX 75231. Mrs. Alice Ruth McDuffie was born in Richmond, Virginia on November 23, 1929, the beloved daughter of the late Clayton Miller Sr. and Estelle (Jones) Miller. After an extended illness, she was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Alice was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Jack McDuffie for 68 years and their beautiful union of love was blessed with the births of nine children. Alice was a licensed beautician and retired from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health Food Service Department after twenty-nine years of dedicated service. Mrs. McDuffie was a dedicated member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church where she served on the choir. She loved reading her Bible, traveling, cooking, talking on the telephone, and being with her family. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who has left a legacy of love to her family and many friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by four sons, Herbert Jr. , Leon, Andrew, and Frank McDuffie; one grandson, Herbert Trey McDuffie III; three brothers, Clayton, Jr, Marion, and Joe Miller; and two sisters, Irene Grant and Elzlar Tyler. Alice leaves to cherish her precious memories three loving daughters, Thelma (Fred) Allen of McDonough, GA, Gaile (David) Higgins of Columbia, SC, and Deborah McDuffie of Locust Grove, GA; two loving sons, Donald (Denise) McDuffie and Larry McDuffie, both of Columbia, SC; two caring brothers-in-law, Odell Jacobs of Lugoff, SC and Horace (Barbara) Jacobs of Columbia, SC; one caring sister-in-law, Minnie Ruff of Columbia, SC; eleven adoring grandchildren, ten precious great-grandchildren, and one precious great-great grandchild; and a host of other loving family members and friends who will always hold her deeply in their hearts. Jack Patrick Saunders went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 3, 2023. Jack was born in Florence, South Carolina on August 27, 1930 to the late Wilbur and Kate Saunders, and was their only child. Late in life, Jack worked for Midlands Technical College in the Computer Lab where he took great pride in assisting the students and encouraging them in their studies. Jack sat at the front desk in the Computer Lab and was known for his clock that ran backwards on the wall behind him. During his time there, he was a friend to both students and staff and was fondly known as Mr. Jack or Magic Jack. He retired in 2012, at the age of 82. Jack treasured the good friends he made at Midlands Technical College. Jack had a strong belief in Jesus and knew the Bible well. He loved telling stories of his love for the Lord and his appreciation of the life and family he was given, not a day went by that he did not mention he was blessed. Jack had a childhood full of close friends and adventures. He could tell colorful stories of fun and happiness despite growing up in the Depression. He worked at the airport in Florence, and got his pilot's license at age 17. Jack proudly served in the Army as a young man, including a tour to Germany. While in Germany, he bought his first camera, a Rolleiflex and started a lifelong love of photography. He left the service after serving two years and moved his family to Columbia, South Carolina where he started a career in sales. He enjoyed his work traveling and meeting people, as he never met a stranger but always missed his family. Jack later worked for the Department of Social Services in the supply and warehouse for many years. Jack was a fascinating person that could tell a story that you were never sure if was true or a tall tale. He had a love for magic and could easily entertain with his humor and tricks. Jack always had a desire to learn whatever was the newest technology and kept his mind sharp by keeping his computer and audio system up to date. Jack had many hobbies in his younger years which included flying small planes, fishing, biking, boating, water skiing and radio control planes. While flying his radio control planes years ago he met Bill Rivers who also enjoyed the hobby. They would became great friends for many years. Jack had an especially strong love for all animals and was never without a pet, many of which he had rescued. He is survived by his five children, Penny Danielson (Bill) , Kim Randolph Hazlett (Phillip), John Wessinger (Ann), Matthew Saunders (Kimberly) and Robert Saunders (Cindy). Nine grandchildren Jason Danielson (Amanda), Scott Danielson, Travis Randolph, Sydney Wessinger, Jessie Wessinger, Chelsea Rotan (Jason), Amanda Halsey (James) Patrick Saunders, and Allison Saunders . He also had several great grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a grandson he dearly loved, Daniel Randolph. Jack's smile and quick wit will be missed by both family and friends. There will be an inurnment at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery at a later date. Antwon Latrell Ashley began his earthly life on October 19, 1982, in Columbia, South Carolina. Antwon also known as "Geezy" was the son of Glenda Ann Ashley and the late Vernon Lee Washington. God called him to his heavenly home on Sunday, November 26, 2023, in Columbia South Carolina. Antwon graduated from C. A. Johnson High School in 2000. He went on to earn his Associate Degree of Applied Sciences in Machine Tool Technology from Midlands Technical College in 2019. Antwon was most recently employed by Commercial Metals Company in Cayce, South Carolina as a CNC Machinist. Antwon possessed an infectious personality and there was never a stranger in the room when he was around. He enjoyed his life and his family. In his spare time, Antwon enjoyed talking about sports, politics, community problems and solutions, and spending time with friends and loved ones. He was a devoted father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Antwon was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Washington; grandfather, Jimmy Smith; grandmother, Elouise Ashley; sister, Ashanta Richardson; and aunt, Mamie Jones. Antwon is Survived by his two loving daughters, Kaydence and Madelynn Heatley; and son, Sevin Ashley; his mother, Glenda A. Ashely; four brothers, Justin and Rahim Washington, and Travis and Shadra Ashley; six sisters, Kimberly Minson Myers, Sheila Ashley, Jaleesa Washington, Brittany Rivers, Desiree Johnson, and Lawren Mayo; grandmother, Sue Richardson; aunts, Angela, Maryann, Claretha, Kathy, Stacey, and Audrey Ashley, Louella Washington, and Janice Haggood; three uncles, Kenny, Allen, and Anthony Ashley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving relatives and friends; all of whom join the family in sharing grief caused by his departure.
