Joel Franklin Poteat, 72, passed away peacefully February 22, 2024 at Wendover Hospice of Shelby. Born on August 14, 1951 in Cleveland County to the late John Franklin Poteat and Nannie Lee Penson Poteat, Joel graduated from Crest High School and began working in the printing/manufacturing business and eventually retired from Cleveland County Schools. He will be remembered as a quiet, gentle, family man. His favorite Bible verses were John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” and 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” He also had a passion for painting portraits, landscapes, and places that he had visited or seen. He is preceded in death by his brothers Bill and Robert Poteat and sister Nancy Poteat Alderman. Joel is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Mrs. Bonnie Poteat, daughter Amy Poteat Kendrick (Joe), along with two grandchildren Benjamin and Elijah Kendrick to whom he was affectionately known as Papa. Also left to cherish his memory are siblings Kay Carter, Joyce Carter, Libby Haskin, Dean Poteat, and Judy Simmons along with many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 26, 2024 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home & Crematory with Tim Walker officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family will have a private burial. She was loving and kind to everyone she met. She adored her son and was a wonderful mother to him. She was faithful to keep in touch with her family and friends via her telephone. Carl Samuel Bridges, 96, passed away Tuesday February 20, 2024 at Atrium Health in Shelby, NC. Born in Cleveland County on February 20, 1928, he was the son of the late Carver Spurgeon Bridges and Jennie Dean Allen Bridges. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Annie Rae Bridges, brothers, Lee Bridges, Lawrence Bridges , Spurgeon Bridges, his sister Dorothy Bridges Hamrick Wilkerson, as well as a brother-in-law Rev. Charles Rabon. Carl embodied love and devotion as a son, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He faithfully contributed to the Mt. Sinai Church Baptist Church, actively serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and trustee. Those who knew and loved Carl were influenced by his compassion and gentle words, making him a pillar in the community.Carl is survived by his children, Annette Bridges Ledbetter (Lee), Samuel Richard Bridges (Beatrice Hayes Bridges), Sarah Jane Bridges, four grandchildren, Jason Ledbetter, Dana Ledbetter, Victor Bridges (Jessica), Joseph Carver Bridges (Beth), as well as, four great grandchildren, Logan Samuel Bridges, Chloe Ann Bridges, Ester-Mae Nicole Bridges and Kinsley Grace Marie Bridges. Also left to cherish his memory is his sister, JoLena Bridges Rabon and brothers Carver Don Bridges (Leila) and Allen Dean Bridges (Barbara). A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Trexler officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery. Eunice Fay Faries Philbeck, 81, of Shelby, passed away on February 14, 2024, at White Oak Manor in Shelby, NC. Born in Gaston County, NC on July 7, 1942, she was the daughter of Lewis Faries and Evelyn Quinn Faries Roberts. After graduating from Belmont Abbey, Eunice worked with Gaston County Social Services. Eunice loved to sing and performed at various churches and private events in her community. In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles Philbeck, and her siblings, Francis Bland, Morris Farris, Bonnie Singleton, Nelda Rushing, Jack Farris, Rachel Finch, and Ann Blanchard. Survivors include her children; Alex Philbeck of Ft. Mill, SC, Rocky Philbeck of Shelby, NC and Jennifer State and husband, Shawn of Peachtree City, GA; seven grandchildren, Alexandra Philbeck, Ava Philbeck, Alaina Cook, Sammy Philbeck, Carter Philbeck, Jacquelyn State, and Kiefer State, and two great-grandchildren, Cailyn Cook and Coltyn Poteat. Survivors include two daughters, Toni Lopez-Banda and husband, Efrain of Rutherfordton and Maggie Arndt of Ellenboro; special friend, Jackie Bowen; three brothers, Jimmy Tessneer of Vale, James Tessneer of Casar and Homer Tessneer of Lawndale; two sisters, Barbara Isaac of Crouse and Vicky Blackwood of Lincolnton; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Gary Lee Parks, born in Asheville on November 17, 1962, went home to be with the Lord on February 11, 2024. He was preceded in death by his mother, Corine Davidson Parks; his father, Andy Parks; his sister, Ludelia Parks; and his brother, William Davidson. Gary attended Charles D. Owen High School in Swannanoa and got his GED. He was a loving man who enjoyed weightlifting, watching sports, and spending time with his family. Gary was a diligent man with an infectious smile who never met a stranger. He was a God-fearing member of The Western Carolina Rescue Mission in Shelby, NC. Left to cherish Gary’s memory are his daughters Sherese Railey, Janelle Railey (Matthew), and Michelle Railey, ten grandchildren all of Colorado Springs, sisters Demetra Barnwell of Greensboro, Margaret Davidson of Black Mountain, Patricia Gibson (Larry) of Asheville, Donna Sloan of Swannanoa, Deborah Walker (James Jr.) of Greenville, SC, Sherry McGee (Timothy) of Black Mountain, and Alefiea “Tammy” Parks of Greensboro. His memory will also be cherished by a special aunt like a mother, Patsy Davidson of Asheville, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, other relatives, and friends. A Funeral Service to honor the life of Gary will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Thomas Chapel AME Zion Church (124 West College Street, Black Mountain, NC 28711) at 1pm. He will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be held immediately after the service at Oak Grove Cemetery. Viewing will be held at Avery's Memorial Chapel on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 1pm - 7pm. The service will be live streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
