Mary Merritt Obituary

Mary Francis Merritt, 98, born 1924 in Illinois, passed away Sunday April 23, 2023. Mary married Paul D. Merritt Sr. , January 2, 1945. Mary received her nursing certificate in Illinois in 1944 where she began her nursing career. After moving to Nebraska in 1958, Mary worked as a registered nurse at St. Elizabeth hospital. She continued her education and received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Doane. Mary was a nurse and head nurse for the NICU at Saint Elizabeth hospital for the majority of her 40 plus year career. After retiring, Mary continued to serve the Saint Elizabeth's community by actively volunteering at the hospital. Mary was also very active in her community; volunteering for many organizations to include: Matt Talbots Kitchen and Outreach, The Lied Center for Performing Arts, Saint Elizabeth's Hospice, and others. In addition, Mary was an avid Nebraska football season ticket holder for the last 6 decades. Mary was a beloved mother and grandmother. She is proceeded in death by her mother Glenna Bowden, husband Paul D. Merritt, Sr. , and eldest son Paul D. Merritt, Jr. Mary is survived by her sons Wm. Lee Merritt (Rhonda) of Lincoln, Richard Merritt of Orlando, Florida; and daughter Terri Lobdell (Tom) Hereford, Arizona. Mary is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
