About 1960 his family moved to Hartland, WI where Rich attended and graduated from St. Charles Catholic elementary school then went on to graduate from Arrowhead High School in 1975. After graduation, Rich enlisted in the US Navy. He served 20 years traveling on several ships which took him from Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Madagascar, New Zealand, and Guam with home ports on the west coast. He served as a gunner's mate instructor for 16-inch guns at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in IL. He went on to serve on the east coast aboard the USS Nassau where he retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Once he became a civilian again, he moved to Jefferson County. Rich worked as a very skilled maintenance mechanic for Anderson Machining and most recently for Saelnes Corp. in Johnson Creek. When the city of Jefferson moved and remodeled a house to auction off as a fundraiser for Project Hope, Rich put in a bid for the home and was the winner. Jefferson was also where he met his soulmate of 23 years, Denise Vesper. Rich wholeheartedly became the proud "Papa" to all of Denise's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was very generous with his time, talents and resources. His nieces and nephews were also the beneficiaries of his generous heart. He rode in several fundraising rides for cancer on his Harley. One of his favorite yearly events was deer hunting with his brothers and nephews at his brother's cabin in Minocqua. Golfing was another one of his passions. He golfed in many golf tournaments with two brothers and a nephew as a 4some. Rich was a fan of the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, also loved camping and fishing with his little buddies.
