Mary Jo Ellen Lash September 16, 1955 - October 3, 2023 Mary Jo, age 68, died peacefully in her sleep at home on October 3, 2023. Mary Jo was the second oldest child of Shirley and William Lash Sr. She graduated from Northwest High School in 1973, afterwards earning a degree from UNO and a law degree from Creighton University. Mary Jo became a surrogate mother to her preteen sister, Genevieve, after their mother died. Mary Jo and Genevieve continued a family tradition of yearly trips to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado from their childhood on, and had just returned from Estes Park the week before Mary Jo's passing. On this recent trip, Mary Jo was able to spend several days in a mountain lodge with Genevieve and her beloved brother, Bill Jr. , driving up winding Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park at sunset, with Mary Jo asking Genevieve to turn up the volume when a favorite song played. One of her favorite songs was "Desperado" by The Eagles. Ill health kept Mary Jo from working in her final years, but she still enjoyed reading mysteries, often completing a book in a day, and rooting on the Huskers football team. Mary Jo loved homemade chocolate chip cookies, Big Fred's pizza, and Mountain Dew (or "nectar of the gods," as she called it). Back in the 1960s, after family drives in the country, Mary Jo's favorite treat was a Dilly Bar from Dairy Queen. Mary Jo read the newspaper daily, and watched local and national news on TV each evening, keeping abreast of politics. Mary Jo was a proud liberal and didn't care who knew it. Mary Jo never married. She was blessed with a select group of wonderful friends, including Kim (Waldo) Broyles of Ord, Nebraska; Jay and Andrea Copple of Berthoud, Colorado; Julie (Cold) Kissack of Arkansas; and Heather Smalley of Omaha, among others. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley (Marshall) Lash; father, William Lash Sr. ; and brother, Michael Lash. She is survived by brother, William Lash Jr. ; sister, Genevieve Lash; brother-in-law, Joe Janowski; niece, Rachel Lash; and her much-loved cats. No services.

From an early age, Michael displayed an outgoing and curious personality, cultivating a deep love for animals, a passion for exploring new places, and learning. His educational journey led him through Deerwood Elementary, Black Hawk Middle School, and culminated in his graduation from Eagan Senior High School in 2011. During his high school years, Michael's vibrant spirit shone through as he played the trombone in the school band, contributed to the Eagan drumline, competed on the bowling team, and even experienced the excitement of being part of the homecoming court. His friendships, formed during this period, remained steadfast throughout his life. After high school, Michael attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, from 2011 to 2015. Some of Michael's most impactful experiences in college occurred with his mission-guided travel. During his freshman year, he traveled to Uganda, Africa. Michael played a vital role in securing $60,000 in funding from global contacts and various organizations to build a hospital for those in need. Additionally, Michael facilitated the sponsorship of $300,000 in donated medical supplies, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of many. He excelled in his work, and in addition to his expected duties, he led the effort for Lincoln Financial to be a founding partner of SAGAA- the Sexuality and Gender Alliance of Actuaries. Uplifting people of diverse backgrounds in the actuarial field brought him immense joy, pride, and purpose. Outside of his professional life, Michael shared a home and countless joyful moments with his partner, Hogan Hudgins. Their home was constantly filled with love and laughter, enhanced by the presence of their dog Cashew, and cats Zoey and Cece. For the majority of their time together, Michael and Hogan lived in New Orleans, Louisiana, where they loved exploring the city's food, beverages, and festivals. Twice, Michael hosted friends from across the country to celebrate Mardi Gras, a festival that was nearly as joyous and vibrant as he was. When they decided that they were returning to Omaha in 2023, with great pride, Michael purchased his first home, marking a new chapter in their lives together. Michael enjoyed decorating their new home and loved hosting their friends. Michael and Hogan looked forward to spending many years together in their home. In April 2023, Michael embraced his role as an uncle with joy, welcoming his niece Julia into the world. He FaceTimed with her almost daily and devoted time to crocheting stuffed animals for her.
