"Mary Elizabeth Hill passed away peacefully on May 4, 2023, and joined the Lord and her family in Heaven. Mary was born in Denton, Texas on November 2nd, 1926, to Eleanor and George Milton Hopkins, Sr. She attended North Texas State College, where she graduated with a degree in Nutrition. She was president of Delta Chi Delta sorority and was listed in Who's Who on American Colleges and Universities. Mary married W. D. "Dub" Hill on July 29, 1950. They enjoyed married life with family and friends for 62 years until Dub's passing in 2012. As a young couple, they attended Tyler Street Methodist Church where they met lifelong friends. Mary and Dub raised their 4 children as members in Glen Oaks United Methodist Church, Oak Cliff Country Club, Indian Guides, Girls and Boy Scouts, and many other organizations. Always putting their children ahead of their own interest. They travelled the world extensively including many cruises with The Bridge Club, BOMA, family and friends. They loved spending time at their home in Lakeway with both of her brothers George and Wallace and their families. Their favorite place to escape the Dallas heat was their home in Eagle Vail. They treasured their summers there. Mary was a woman of strong faith. She read her devotionals and Bible daily. She prayed for many. Her most precious moments were spent being with Dub, her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She attended many sporting events, dance recitals, graduations, showers and weddings, always with a smile on her face and joy in her heart. Aside from family, Mary treasured her time with friends. She had several friend groups including book clubs and multiple bridge clubs that she enjoyed for decades. She continued her weekly bridge groups, happy hours and dinners with friends until the very end. Mary is preceded in death by her parents: Eleanor and George Hopkins, Sr; her brothers: Wallace and George Hopkins, Jr; and her daughter: Carolyn Johnston. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Richard and Rae Hill, Marilyn Hill, Sharon (Hill) and Carter Thurmond; and her son-in-law, Don Johnston. Mary is survived by her two sister in laws Jane Hopkins and Margaret Hopkins and is also survived by her 13 grandchildren: Thomas and Anna Johnston; Stephen and Melissa Johnston; Suzanne Johnston; Megan ( Johnston) and Daniel Arnold; Preston Johnston; Tyler Hill; Chase and Haley Hill; Courtney (Hill) and Jamie Utt; Kallie (Fitzpatrick) and Jerod Jestice; Kimberly (Fitzpatrick) and Grant Russell; Kyle Fitzpatrick; Carter and Christina Thurmond; and Marshall Thurmond. Lastly, Mary was survived by 17 great grandchildren who she enjoyed being a part of their lives She was truly the Matriarch of the Family, loved and respected by all. The Family wishes to express our thanks to the wonderful caregivers who she had over the past 3 years: Nancy, Norma, Cassandra, Coretta, and Debbie; along with the countless family and friends who would come to visit and pray for Mary. We also want to thank Thelma Moore and Dr. Christina Kuo for their unending care and love. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm, Thursday, May 18th at Highland Park United Methodist Church, in the Cox Chapel, 3300 Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, Texas 75206.
