Mary attended and graduated from Napier High School in Ames, Iowa, in 1943. After graduation she taught high school at Hartford Consolidated High School, and later worked at the School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. Simpson College is where she met her husband and lifelong companion, Harold. Mary and Harold were married on August 11, 1947, at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, a union which lasted for over 60 years. After residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where daughter Linda was born, and Potsdam, New York, where son Blair was born, Mary and Harold moved to Lincoln in 1953. In 2020, Mary moved to a nursing facility in Omaha, Nebraska, to be nearer to Linda. Upon arrival in Lincoln, Nebraska Wesleyan University dominated Mary's life as Harold began his career there and became Chairman of the English Department. She was an avid fan of Nebraska Wesleyan sports, listening to games on her radio when she couldn't attend in person. She was notable for her collection of milk glass, her beautiful floral arrangement creations, and her tolerance of Harold's vast collection of books. While living in Lincoln, Mary was a former PTA officer; Alpha Chi Omega Mothers' Club president; Phi Kappa Tau Mothers' Club member; NWU Faculty Wives Club president; and a Circle Member of the First Methodist Church.
