Mary Charlotte Zettelman Greer was born December 2nd, 1941 in Evanston, Illinois and passed away on September 10th, 2023 peacefully at home with her family around her. Mary was the youngest daughter of Elsa Emily Oldberg Zettelman and Henry Joseph Zettelman MD. Mary grew up in Evanston, Illinois and summered with family in Estes Park, Colorado in her formative years with her family and grandparents. Mary graduated from Hiram College after two years of study at Brown University. While at Brown her love for folk music led to her participation with the South County Singers and an appearance on the television show, Hootenanny. She never lost her love for playing the guitar and singing and was an accomplished guitarist who also taught guitar for many years. She also studied at Northwestern University, the University of Colorado, and received a master's degree in education from Kent State University. Mary settled with her first husband, Gregor William "Bill" Greer in Hudson and taught in the English Department of Hudson High School from 1978 - 1993. She has never forgotten her students from that time or many of the students she tutored in her home who became dear friends. Her passion for teaching and learning continued, with expertise in teaching writing, literature, Spanish and Latin. In 1990 Mary was married to, and is survived by, George Clinton Sosebee, who has remained her best friend and partner. After building a home with George in Shalersville, Ohio she continued her active involvement in the community helping to build the Kent Community TimeBank, and was actively involved in Concerned Citizens Ohio a group engaged in environmental issues, especially fracking. In 1983 Mary won the John F. Kennedy scholarship for excellence in teaching from the Ohio Education Association. In 2018 she won the Edith Chase Award for her involvement in environmental protection activism. In her 70's she published a lifetime of writing including children's stories and numerous books of poetry. Mary is survived by four beloved children: daughters Dr. Mary "Maidie" Oldberg Rosengarden (William Mrkvicka) children Nathan and Jane, Sarah Wellburn Greer (Chris Gable) children, Adelia, Asher, Adam and grandchild, Miles, Abigail Holt Greer (Chris Lasko) children, Sam and Emma, and James "Jim" William Greer (Clarence Berger) children Leo and Charlotte. Mary is preceded in death by grandson Theodore "Teddy", granddaughter Sarah, and Mary's sister Elizabeth "Lisbie" Zettelman Goss. Mary is also survived by her beloved sister Anne Zettelman Haggerty (Steve). She is also survived by her dear stepchildren Rebecca "Becky" Gama, children Gina and Zeca, Theresa "Tracy" Green, child Zachary, Christine "Christy" Sosebee, children Alex and Noah, Stephen Sosebee (Zeena), children Deema, Jenna, Layla, Waseem and Amy Verrilli (Chris), children Carter and Isabelle. Mary is indebted to the Last Exit Friday night poetry group, especially Bob W. , Terry M. , Mike W. , Jackie P. and so many others. Mary was especially close to her Faith Fellowship and held dear many people especially children; Will, Ben, Josie, Sam, Aaron, Amber, Claire, Grant, and many more. Mary touched many lives, and her loving spirit will live on in our hearts. Kevin Kerns, age 63 years, died unexpectedly at home in Kent, Ohio on November 28, 2023. He was born in Cleveland on September 12, 1960. Kevin was a lifelong learner who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (University of Akron, Magna Cum Laude) and a Master of Arts degree in Public Affairs (Indiana University). He worked mostly in the transportation industry, including working as a truck driver for several companies and a school bus driver for Kent City Schools. He was proud to be chosen as a member of the national Safety Team when he was a driver for Overnight Transportation. Kevin embraced life fully. He was a loving spouse and father who was devoted to his family. His sons were a source of pride and becoming a father was one of the great joys of his life. Kevin loved the natural world, and hiking in green places was a spiritual and beloved activity for him. He also loved travel, and learning about other people, places, and their language as well as learning about different cultures and cuisines. He and his wife went hiking, birding, and camping in many US parks, and they also explored international destinations together. Kevin was also an excellent cook who enjoyed cooking dishes from around the world. He had a good heart, and he enjoyed helping people and bringing them happiness. Kevin was a good friend to many, and he especially cherished his participation with other men in the Mankind Project, his friends in the Spanish Meet-up, hiking with friends, and the friendships he made at the Unitarian Universalist church. He brought his sense of awe and gratitude to all that he did. Kevin was preceded in death by his father Ralph Charles Kerns and his mother Ellen Ann (Norton) Kerns. He also deeply missed his Aunt Phyllis Szesze and his father-in-law Richard Jackson who were like second parents to him. Kevin is survived by his wife Kathryn (Jackson) Kerns, his son Marine Corps 1st Lt. Noah Kerns, his son Alan Kerns, and his daughter-in-law Ally (Hahn) Kerns. He is also survived by his brother William Kerns and his partner Ann Baker, his mother-in-law Ruth (Theilmann) Jackson, his sister-in-law Susan (Jackson) Kildow and her sons Andrew and Daniel, and his brother-in-law Thomas Jackson and his wife Ann and son Richard. Kevin will be cremated at Bissler and Son Funeral Home and Crematory in Kent, Ohio. A memorial service has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at 4:00PM in Hobbs Hall at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent (228 Gougler Avenue, Kent, OH 44240). Nancy Rhodes (nee Shaffer), age 69, of Kent, OH passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 after a long battle with Pancreatic cancer. Nancy was born March 7, 1954 to Orville and Helen Shaffer, of Kent. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1972 and went on to spend her working years in the food service industry. She was very proud to have spent 30 years as a dietary aide at Kent Healthcare Center. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Larry Shaffer; and her husband of 32 years, Arthur "Dusty" Rhodes. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (John) Briggs of Kent; as well as her grandson, Matthew, who was the love of her life. Nancy was a devoted mother, and the proudest " " imaginable. She adored her family and would do anything to help a friend. Nancy's other loves were her pets, especially her beloved dachshund Fritz, and her poodle, Molly. Nancy loved everything Christmas, and will be remembered fondly for her elaborate cookie platters, and her "world famous" lasagna. Nancy will be sorely missed by so many. Robert W. "Bob" Loos, age 77, passed away on November 17th following a long illness. Bob loved his country and was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He served in Vietnam and was awarded two Purple Hearts. He retired from Ohio Bell after 38 years of service. Bob was an avid golfer and loved his golfing buddies. He was a self-taught woodworker. He built many pieces of furniture for his family and was always available to assist with home improvements. He enjoyed coaching his kids in sports and never missed a game. He loved gardening and caring for animals. He was preceded in death by his loving son, Matthew Loos; parents, Bill and Martha Loos; in-laws Anthony and Mary Jo Mollica; sister-in-law Carolyn (Betty) Compton (nee Mollica); brothers-in-law, Michael and Tony Mollica; dear Bob Carlilse and special friend, Bill Cramer. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Jo; son, Christopher; daughter, Kimatha and son-in-law George Hurst; sister, Sandra Smith (nee Loos); and nephew, Robin Smith. Special in life are his three granddaughters, Samantha, Holly, and Makayla, and beautiful daughter-in-law Sherry Loos (nee Baker). Elizabeth Anne (Davis) Stuart, departed this life on November 7, 2023 at the age of 97. She was a resident of Danbury Senior Living in Cuyahoga Falls since 2021 and lived in the Kent and Stow area since 2006. Anne and her late husband of 61 years, Robert M. Stuart, previously resided in Huber Heights, OH for 39 years. Robert was a retired US Army Major and professor at Sinclair Community College. As a military family they made homes, and enjoyed life in many places- Ohio, Alabama, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Florida, California, Hawaii, and Taiwan. She was born in Leavittsburg, OH in 1926, the youngest of four children of the late Griffith and Alta (Green) Davis. She graduated from Warren Harding High School and attended Sinclair Community College in Dayton. Anne was a member of Lutheran churches in Dayton and Kent. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Sheldon and Ned and her sister Eleanor. Her son and daughter-in-law, Robert B. and Jennifer Rowekamp Stuart passed away in 2002. Anne is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Sherry and David Vanderneut of Kent; granddaughter Megan Stuart of Parma, OH; grandsons Christian (Wendy) Vanderneut of Munroe Falls and Kyle (Nicole) Vanderneut of Danville, CA; great grandsons, Nathan, Connor, Samuel and Benjamin Vanderneut and half-brother John (Kathy) Davis of Clinton, NY. In honoring her wishes, Anne will be cremated and her urn will be placed with her husband, son and daughter-in-law in the City of Clayton Cemetery. There will be no local calling hours or service.
