KRAAN, Martin – Martin passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the age of 92. Loving husband of the late Henny Kraan (née Smit) (2020) for 62 years. Cherished father to Diana (Fred), Doug (Lindsay), Darlene (Gary), Donna (John), Gary, Stephen (Shelley), David (Loretta), lovingly remembered by his 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Dear brother to Joanne (the late Frank), Anne (the late Mike), Rita (the late Ferg), Keith (Judy), Willa (the late Lorne), Jane (Paul), Joe (Deb), and predeceased by Arie, Hank (survived by Marie), Bertha (survived by Carl), and John (survived by Janet). He will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Martin began his life journey on December 28, 1930, in Hoogland, Netherlands, the eldest son of Aart and Wilhelmina Kraan. Martin’s life changed at the age of 19, when he made the decision to seek better opportunities after WWII and immigrated to Canada. The rest of the family; his parents and 10 siblings followed a year later.
He met and married Henny on October 19, 1957, and she was the love of his life. Together they raised 7 children in Lindsay, Ontario. Martin was a hard and loyal worker. Starting out he worked for United Van Lines. His passion for farming led him to take over the family dairy farm from his father, on Highway 35.
Family, community, and St. Mary’s Church were his life’s passion and commitment. So many happy memories of life on the farm with close and extended family members, deep friendships in the community and a strong connection to the church.
After Martin retired from the farm life, both he and Henny devoted time to service in the church. Martin was a loyal member to the Legion of Mary, and he dedicated his time to the community.
Martin was involved with the Knights of Columbus achieving their highest rank and was responsible for strengthening its membership, helping organize fund raising events and helping others at every turn.
His legacy of compassion and service to his family, friends and the church will always be remembered.
A visitation will take place at the Stoddart Funeral Home, 24 Mill Street, Lindsay on Tuesday, November 14th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm and on Wednesday, November 15th from 10:00am until 12:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 31 Russell Street East, Lindsay on Wednesday at 1:00pm. If desired, a memorial donation may be made to St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 1124 Lindsay, or the Kawartha Lakes Food Source, would be appreciated by the family.
