MARY LEE (VANDYKE) COOK, 93 years of age of Vansant, VA, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born at Dry Fork during the great depression, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Mae (Childress) VanDyke. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and worked at the Sheriffs Department and 8-years as an Assistant Registrar for the Buchanan County Courthouse. Mary had many loves in her life, but one of the most important was her love for the Lord. She was baptized with her husband, Red, April 2, 1955, at Grundy Church of Christ by Preacher Clarence Greenleaf. In August 1957, she, along with 11 others, became founding members and began the Vansant Church of Christ, where she continued as a member till her death. She served as a Sunday School teacher, taught Vacation Bible School for years, sang in the choir for its entire existence and was a member of Sunshine Servants where she did outreach quilts for the community. She also attended GBI classes for several years and was a volunteer cook for CCYC with Polly Kennedy. Mary was very supportive of the Looney Mexico Mission and served as the forwarding agent for over 60 years. Clinton Looney was quoted as saying, "although she never stepped foot in Mexico, she still was as much a part of the mission as anyone there. "She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a wonderful homemaker. One of her greatest joys in life was holding her great-grandchild, who was the "light of her life. " Mary was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Stanford "Red" Cook; Sisters: Ida Pearl Runyon and Lucy Suttle; Brothers: George, Claude, Pete, Dan, Fred and Guy VanDyke. Those left to cherish her memory include Sons: William Lee (Chris) Cook of Oakwood, VA, Jimmy Wayne "Lemon" Cook of Abingdon, VA, Philip (Bernie) Cook of Vansant, VA; Granddaughter: Sommer (Brandon) Belcher of Bristol, VA; Great-Granddaughter: Kelsey Belcher; Sister-in-Law: Janice Cook. Also, survived by several nieces and nephews, including Special Niece: Jane Moore. She appreciated her friend Sandi Waddell whom she loved and who fixed her hair every week for several years. Special thanks to Tammy Ratliff and all the Staff at Special Care Hospice and her church family who visited and brought food. Also, Mary had four special caregivers that started as employees and quickly became family, Mary Ann Aylward, Chasity Osborne, Margaret Childress and Christy Hurley. If it wasn't for their love, kindness and dedication, she wouldn't have been able to stay at home. For that, the family will be forever grateful.
