Our dear son, brother, uncle and friend, Matthew Ryan Warzyski, passed away December 8, 2023. Matthew was born in Springfield, MA on November 22, 1985 and in 1990 his family moved to Grand Rapids, MI. Matthew graduated from Northview High School, graduated from Grand Rapids Community College with an Associate in Arts degree and then attended Davenport College, receiving a Bachelor of Business. Matthew was always a hard worker, delivering newspapers in elementary school, later on working in restaurants and lastly at Brink's. He also served proudly as a Sergeant for 8 years in the Michigan National Guard. As a young boy, Matthew had leukemia at age 6 and in 2010 was diagnosed with an atypical brain meningioma. Over the years, he had four brain surgeries and clinical trials in Grand Rapids and Chicago, always brave and putting up a relentless fight. Matthew was always thankful for time spent with family, especially his sister and with friends. Those precious times provided him time to think about something else than his daily discomfort and pain. He really loved going to movies, eating out and playing video games. Matthew is survived by his mother and father, Michael and Karen Warzynski, his sister Jennifer (Zachary) Fisher, his nephews Brody and Kelby and his niece Gracie. Rudean Fairman

Rudean Fairman

Age - 92

December 8, 2023

Rudean Roth Fairman, age 92, of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away peacefully on November 27 at her home at the Village of Heather Hills surrounded by her family. Rudean (Deane) Roth was born on December 22, 1930 with her twin sister Roberta (Birdie) to Rev. Rudolph W. Roth and Veldean Dexter Vrooman in Charlotte, Michigan. The twins were the youngest of five girls. Rudean was raised in Bay City, Michigan where her father was Pastor of the First Congregational Church until his death in 1941. Her mother returned to school for an M. S. degree at University of Michigan in order to raise her girls and secure a position as Dean of Women at Bay City High School. Rudean was an active and artistic person from the start. She played piano and learned to play the bass at Interlochen Center for the Arts summer camp. Later she played bass violin in an all girls' dance band while attending Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she received her B. A. in Education. Rudean was an avid seamstress who made many of her own clothes as well as ones for her daughters. She dabbled in painting and loved decorating her homes. During the summer of 1951, Rudean worked as a waitress at the Harbor Point Club, Harbor Springs, MI. While walking the beach, she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Philip Fairman who was working as a summer chauffeur for John Blodgett (Blodgett Hospital). It was love at first sight. Bob was attending Michigan State University, and after they both graduated in 1952, Bob went on to serve as a lieutenant in the Air Force, and Deane taught elementary school in Bob's hometown of Lansing, MI. Bob and Deane were married in a double wedding with her twin sister Roberta to Wilfred Gephart, in June of 1953. Bob and Rudean had a storybook love affair that lasted 71 years. Due to Bob's advancing career with Touche, Niven, Bailey, & Smart (now Deloitte), Rudean and Bob lived in several locations, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Chicago, Akron and Cleveland before returning to Grand Rapids in 1984 where Bob became partner with the investment firm of Norris, Perne & French. Despite all the moves, Rudean was active in every new community, serving in leadership roles for the Girl Scouts, churches, hospital guilds, and the arts, but most importantly, she played the key role in successfully raising four children, all now happily married with children of their own. Rudean loved to walk and be outdoors. She had a keen eye for beauty which was evidenced in the decor of the various homes in which the family lived. She was a gracious host and provided warmth and a welcoming spirit. She loved reading and kept up with the issues of the day. Rudean and Bob built a life of community and service. In later life, Rudean and Bob traveled the world with friends and cherished many deep and lasting friendships everywhere they went. As a family, they shared ski trips and visits to family in Florida, Illinois, Michigan, and California. More recently in 2012, Bob and Rudean blessed their children and spouses with a special trip to Ireland. Bob and Rudean also enjoyed a winter home in Venice, Florida, and a cabin on the Little Manistee River near Irons, Michigan, which served as a family anchor since 1966. The cabin provided a place for family and friends to gather over the past 57 years and to enjoy canoeing, kayaking, fly fishing, roasting marshmallows over the firepit, and eating grandma and grandpa's homemade ice cream. Rudean especially appreciated the peacefulness and serenity of nature that the cabin provided, whether it was picking wild asparagus in the field, admiring the beauty of a lady's-slipper amongst the pines, or simply watching a hummingbird on the feeder. Rudean and Bob would tell you they enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life and had no regrets. Rudean also had a deep faith in God. She loved life but was ready to go to her heavenly home, particularly since her beloved Bob preceded her in death by a mere 39 days. Bob and Deane celebrated 70 years of marriage this past June. Fittingly today they're together in eternity. Rudean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fairman in 2023; her mother, Veldean Roth in 1998; her father, Rudolph Roth in 1941; and sisters, Betty Roth 1930; Barbara Holcomb 2013; twin Roberta (Gephart) Rogers 2021; and Virginia Rayburn in 2021. Rudean is survived by her four children Rob (Cathy) of Bakersfield, CA, Nancy (David Voges) of Traverse City, MI, Kate Fairman (Bill Queen) of Cedar, MI, and Jen (David Kirchgessner) of East Grand Rapids, MI. Rudean and Bob have been blessed with 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, many of whom referred to them as 'Dee Dee' and 'Pa'. A memorial service will be held for both Rudean and Bob at the Mayflower Congregational Church at 11:00 a. m. on Friday, January 26, 2024. For those who wish to make a memorial contribution, please consider a donation to the Grand Rapids Symphony, 300 Ottawa Ave. NW, Ste 100, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, or the charity of your choice.Show more

Bethyne Hamelund

Bethyne Hamelund

Age - 71

December 7, 2023

On December 3, 2023 The Lord Jesus Christ came and took Bethyne by the hand to lead her to heaven to join the communion of saints. Beth was born on February 17, 1952 in Reed City, MI to Robert and Margaret (Wilson) Pontz. She is survived by her brother and sister in law, Lynn and Nancy Pontz of Ludington, MI; sister and brother in law, Nancy and John Dotson of Cookeville, TN; niece, Nicole (Jeff) Paquin and family of Greer, SC; nephews, Christopher Pontz of Williamston, MI, Matthew (Sarah) Dotson of Lake Forest, CA and Michael Dotson of Severence, CO; and special friends, Kim and Roy Peasley, Tammy and Jason Belcher, Matt and Christy Bell and her sister-of-the-heart, Kathleen Filkins. As a child Bethyne was always outside and running everywhere she went. She discovered a love of baseball and when old enough joined the summer recreation softball league. That started a 30+ year love affair with the game; playing every position at least once on seven different teams and winning state fast-pitch tournaments three times. The "off season" was filled with bowling, sometimes three leagues a week. Her focus was to enjoy being with her teammates and competing with herself to improve her game. Bethyne loved to sing. Although quite shy as a youngster, she learned to appreciate the gift God had given her and willingly sang, especially in church. She was privileged to be involved with the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Alumni Choir for ten summers and enjoyed singing "good" music. For 20 years Beth also enjoyed singing in a women's barbershop quartet with friends, Helen Jones, Millie Gillies and Donna Drake. In this group she developed the skill to "carry" her own part and was finally able to sing in her "tenor range" where she was most comfortable. Beth's love for God and music led her to the opportunity to be a church musician. She played for worship at Immanuel Lutheran Church for almost 10 years and then at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church for 15 years, where was also choir director for five years. Throughout her life, in good times and bad and especially during the last battle with cancer, Bethyne was happy to say that her first love was for Jesus Christ. Ask her where her strength and joy came from, she would tell you that Jesus was her Rock, her Refuge, her Shield , her Strength. To Him be honor and glory and praise! " There will be a service of faith and celebration at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 323 S. State Street, Big Rapids, MI on Wednesday, December 13th at 11:00 a. m. with a 10:30 a. m. visitation prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the church. George Goodspeed

George Goodspeed

Age - 88

December 7, 2023

George William Goodspeed, born in Bancroft, MI December 6, 1934, was a week away from turning 89 when he passed the morning of November 28, 2023, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1953. He was active in all aspects of his life, spending summers on the farm as a child and playing sports well into his 70's. George played football (high school & college), track, basketball (Gus Macker), softball, boxing (Golden Gloves), running (including the inaugural Old Kent Riverbank Run in '78), biking, swimming, and tennis. He organized the Murray Lake Annual Triathlon for 15 years where he lived in Lowell. In his working life he was also active, and never pursued a desk job. Instead, he joined the Navy in peacetime, then worked construction before beginning his 25-year career as a firefighter for the GRFD, saving lives & homes, ranking as a lieutenant. Concurrent with his time at the Fire Department he owned and maintained rental properties throughout Grand Rapids. Even in retirement he worked odd jobs to stay busy and social, and volunteered many hours toward the Murray Lake Association. He raised four children as a single parent, demonstrating to his kids that the notion of gender-based household duties was outdated. He separated paper, plastic, and metals as far back as the 1970s, long before it was a thing, as he wanted to leave the planet better for the next generation. He kept a backyard garden to feed his kids delicious, fresh vegetables, replicating the summer farm experiences he loved as a child. He provided support for his grandchildren when needed, and even the "grand-puppies" when their parents were away on vacation. George was not known for being a "softy," except when it came to those dogs. In his later, more mellow years he continued to challenge himself by becoming an avid reader of American history as well as taking Spanish lessons. In the last 50 years of his life, he was clean and sober, and he was committed to helping mentor many others toward a similar path. He is survived by his children: Dawn Spoelman, Bill (Barbara) Goodspeed, Jim Goodspeed (Stacy Segal), and Patrick Goodspeed. Grandchildren: Joshua (Emily) Fox, Kelsey Spoelman, and Dakota Spoelman, along with several great-grandchildren. A private gathering for family and friends will be held at later date.
